Welcome to the 2020 WikiCup!

Happy New Year, Happy New Decade and Happy New WikiCup! The competition begins today and all article creators, expanders and improvers are welcome to take part. If you have already signed up, your submissions page can be found here. If you have not yet signed up, you can add your name here and the judges will set up your submissions page. We are relaxing the rule that only content on which you have completed significant work during 2020 will count; now to be eligible for points in the competition, you must have completed significant work on the content at some time! Any questions on the rules or on anything else connected to the Cup should be directed to one of the judges, or posted to the WikiCup talk page. Signups will close at the end of January, and the first round will end on 26 February; the 64 highest scorers at that time will move on to round 2. Good luck! The judges for the WikiCup are Sturmvogel 66 (talk · contribs · email), Godot13 (talk · contribs · email), Vanamonde93 (talk · contribs · email) and Cwmhiraeth (talk) 11:43, 1 January 2020 (UTC)

Mentoring for FAC

Howdy, I am looking for a mentor to help me improve my Saving Light article so it could become a featured article. It had previously undergone fairly large edits (26,000 bytes to 41,000 bytes) and to have someone go over it, as well as the entire article, to make sure it is ready to become a Featured article candidate. The article had also undergone four previous featured article nominations, two failed because not enough people voted and the other two failed because the article wasn't ready. I'm not totally sure if you would like to, or even could, help me with the article, but if you can, that would be great. If not, then please ping me so I can just ask another mentor. Micro (Talk) 01:38, 2 January 2020 (UTC)

@MicroPowerpoint: Hi, sorry, I was on vacation last week. This isn't my usual area, but I'm willing to give the article a look-through for anything I see that should be sorted before nomination. I'll try to get to it in the next few days; if I haven't by Wednesday give me a poke. --PresN 20:21, 4 January 2020 (UTC)
@MicroPowerpoint: Alright, comments below!
  • "Best Original Trance track of 2017 by the r/EDM subreddit." - Is a fan vote on reddit notable? I don't think so.
  • I'm not 100% sure, but I put it in pretty much because it was reliably sourced. If I was to add another reference, (such as this one or this one) would it be fine or should I just remove it no matter the reference count?
  • It would probably help, I think
  • Cool, thanks for the response. I've added both and it looks good.
  • (Writing) - you refer to the writers by first name in the first 2 paragraphs, but should be last name like the 3rd
  • This was something I don't know what to do with, as the section refers to both Gareth Emery and Roxanne Emery, and simply saying Emery within context may seem confusing (as they are siblings with the same last name).
  • Ah, that makes sense. I had that problem in an article once (John Carmack and Adrian Carmack, no relation) and just spelled out their full names, though in that case there was another John besides.
  • That seems like a good solution. I've changed it to use their full names in the first two paragraphs. The third paragraph does use one full name, though since the next instance of Emery refers to Gareth (and Roxanne isn't mentioned again) it switches back to last names.
  • "four minutes and thirty-six second" - seconds
  • Fixed.
  • "Writers for Earmilk and EDM Identity described the song as "uplifting"" - sounds weird, given that you've been calling the genre "uplifiting trance" - might want a synonym instead
  • Replaced "uplifting" with "emotional" and re-worded the entire sentence so it doesn't seem quote heavy.
  • "On 24 January 2017, Monstercat announced via YouTube that Emery and Standerwick would release "Saving Light" the following Monday. It was released as a digital download on 30 January 2017" - wordy and kind of trivial- "they said they would release it in a week. Then they did." - the release announcement isn't noteworthy given the release was shortly after and went as planned
  • Now that I see it, it does seem a bit silly. I've gotten rid of the announcement bit entirely.
  • "to support the anti-bullying charity Ditch the Label." - you just defined what the charity was a sentence prior. Actually, the whole first paragraph of "Make Trance No. 1 Again" just repeats the end of the previous section
  • Not sure how nobody noticed that before. Got rid of the bit in the first section.
  • "At the end of the year, it was revealed that it became the best-performing trance song in digital sales on Beatport." - wordy and a bit vague. "It was the highest-selling trance song of 2017 on Beatport."
  • Replaced with what you wrote. It did sound like it was the highest performing trance song ever on Beatport.
  • Unsure that the Lawrence drama is really notable, but I don't know much about how big a name he is in the field.
  • I can see why, as it only has one reference. As it does have a reliable source, I think it'll be fine, but just in case I've shortened it and merged it with the first paragraph.
  • It's odd to have reception of the remixes before you get to the "reception" section for the original version- maybe move that into that section, or move "Remixes" after "Critical reception"
  • I've moved the remixes bit after critical reception.
  • Speaking of, I don't know what the standards are for reception sections in song articles, but I'm used to it just being "Reception"
  • Looking at the featured articles S&M and Diamonds, it being called "critical reception" seems fine. It can be called reception if combined with other sections though, such as Smells Like Teen Spirits' "release and reception".
  • (A State of Trance 2017 and Tune of the Year) - 3 of the 4 sentences here are just, very elaborately, saying that it was voted song of the year on Van Buren's show. It's not really important for understanding to explain what date voting was opened and what date the top-50 list was announced.
  • I've shortened it, now only containing the context, reveal, and the "non-trance label" bit.
  • "During the tour, Haliene would make guest appearances" - tense switch, just "made appearances"
  • Done.
Overall, my recommendation prior to any FAC would be to go over the article, sentence by sentence, paragraph by paragraph, and try to rewrite the same ideas with less words. The article has the (very common) problem of being roundabout in describing things instead of getting to the point, and with padding out short bits with extraneous details. I've found User:Tony1/Redundancy exercises: removing fluff from your writing to be an excellent guide towards tightening up article writing. --PresN 16:02, 8 January 2020 (UTC)
  • Thanks for taking the time to go over the article to help me improve it. I've gone over the article and removed/changed bits and pieces to get to the point, though I suck at this and relied on peer reviews and copy editors to do a much better job than me. I will continue to improve it over the next day with that article you linked. Micro (Talk) 01:48, 9 January 2020 (UTC)
  • I've gone through the article and fixed/re-worded a bunch of stuff and got rid of the descriptive stuff (I think) you mentioned. If there are any more specific issues you can point out, please do. I am also thinking of doing another copy edit to pretty much finalise the article, though I don't know if it is needed or not. Micro (Talk) 05:30, 9 January 2020 (UTC)
  • @PresN: Howdy once again, it's been a couple of weeks since I've submitted the featured article nomination for Saving Light and it hasn't been getting much activity. I'm messaging you to ask if you can comment on it, please. It seems that you are busy, so I would understand if it takes you a while to do so, or even if. Thanks. Arbitration

  • The fourth case on Palestine-Israel articles was closed. The case consolidated all previous remedies under one heading, which should make them easier to understand, apply, and enforce. In particular, the distinction between "primary articles" and "related content" has been clarified, with the former being the entire set of articles whose topic relates to the Arab-Israeli conflict, broadly interpreted rather than reasonably construed.
  • Following the 2019 Arbitration Committee elections, the following editors have been appointed to the Arbitration Committee: Beeblebrox, Bradv, Casliber, David Fuchs, DGG, KrakatoaKatie, Maxim, Newyorkbrad, SoWhy, Worm That Turned, Xeno.

New rules for the New Article Announcements?

Hi PresN, I don't understand your recent edit here. It looks like you removed links to a number of new articles that were created between Dec 26, 2019 and Dec 31, 2019 and you replaced many of them with old articles. For example Pochi and Nyaa (created by Amitie 10g on Dec 26, 2019), Music of Grim Fandango (created by Al83tito on Dec 31, 2019), etc. were deleted in your 13 Jan 2020 edit. Meanwhile ESL Pro League which seems to have been created by Valoem on 17 February 2018‎ and Hadouken which was created by Zxcvbnm on 24 March 2010‎ and has been stable since 27 June 2010‎ were added into the New article announcements for December 2019. I've set my account up with a time offset of +00:00 which I believe defaults to the server time but it also appears that articles like All Ghillied Up (recreated by Spy-cicle at 23:06 , 28 December 2019), Ghoul Panic (created by Namcokid47 at 20:24, 29 December 2019), and Spirit Hunter: Death Mark (created by Alexandra IDV at 11:02, 30 December 2019) seem to have been changed from Dec 28 to Dec 29, Dec 29 to Dec 30, and Dec 30 to Dec 31 respectively. Was that an error or have the rules for New Article Announcements changed?

I've been trying to basically rely on your edits quarterly so that I can report NAAs for the WP:VG Newsletter, and that often means manually adding articles from AlexNewArtBot's "VideogamesSearchResult" updates to close the quarter. But it seems like I may be creating more problems than help. I have always been a little unsure about dating NAAs when the article is unstable (e.g. when the first edit in an article's history is a redirect, when an old article without proper sourcing is redirected and then later revived with good sources, etc.), but isn't the basic rule that New article announcements for December 2019 is supposed to announce newly created articles like "Pochi and Nyaa" and "Music of Grim Fandango" on the day they were created? I assume I'm missing some kind of subtlety here. Does a "new article" only count when there is some internal action (e.g some behind-the-scenes official recognition of the article's existance by the encyclopedia like a shift from draftspace to mainspace or from unassessed to assessed or something) that makes the article an "official" article? How does the semi-automated tool you're using work? -Thibbs (talk) 14:17, 13 January 2020 (UTC)

@Thibbs: Hey, so, I think the difference between when things show up in my "NAA" posts vs. AlexNewArtBot is because AlexNAB scans new articles upon creation and then adds them to the list, but my posts are based on the Wikipedia:Version 1.0 Editorial Team/Video game articles by quality log, which itself is based on things being added to the right talk page categories- e.g. the talk page tag being added or updated. I see that Pochi and Nyaa actually first appears there on January 2, because the talk page template was only added during Jan 1 (and it updates once a day). Same for Music of Grim Fandango- you tagged it on the 1st, and it shows up on the next day's list. They both are listed on Wikipedia:WikiProject Video games/New article announcements in January. This "talk page tag" source is also the root of the old articles showing up- ESL Pro League and Hadouken may be old, but didn't get tagged until December 27, so they showed up on the quality log and therefor my list the next day. Things show up on my list if a tag appears or is changed from "redirect/disambig" to something else.
So, the difference boils down to my list is the list of new "WPVG articles", while AlexNAB's list is new "video game articles". You filling out the end of the quarter with the second doesn't cause any problems; the only reason I overwrote it was to keep a consistent data source, but it's not something I care greatly about. --PresN 16:12, 13 January 2020 (UTC)
Ah that explains it. I wanted to make sure that nothing went unaccounted for and it seems like your system does keep track of it all even if on different days. I agree that consistency is important so I'm happy to just rely on your tool. Thanks for maintaining the NAAs! -Thibbs (talk) 20:43, 13 January 2020 (UTC)

TFL notification – February 2020

Hi, PresN. I'm just posting to let you know that List of felids – a list that you have been heavily involved with – has been chosen to appear on the Main Page as Today's featured list for February 17. The TFL blurb can be seen here. If you have any thoughts on the selection, please post them on my talk page or at TFL talk. Regards, Giants2008 (Talk) 23:28, 20 January 2020 (UTC)

Administrators' newsletter – February 2020

News and updates for administrators from the past month (January 2020).

Guideline and policy news

  • Following a request for comment, partial blocks are now enabled on the English Wikipedia. This functionality allows administrators to block users from editing specific pages or namespaces rather than the entire site. A draft policy is being workshopped at Wikipedia:Partial blocks.
  • The request for comment seeking the community's sentiment for a binding desysop procedure closed with wide-spread support for an alternative desysoping procedure based on community input. No proposed process received consensus.

Technical news

  • Twinkle now supports partial blocking. There is a small checkbox that toggles the "partial" status for both blocks and templating. There is currently one template: {{uw-pblock}}.
  • When trying to move a page, if the target title already exists then a warning message is shown. The warning message will now include a link to the target title. [1]

Arbitration

  • Following a recent arbitration case, the Arbitration Committee reminded administrators that checkuser and oversight blocks must not be reversed or modified without prior consultation with the checkuser or oversighter who placed the block, the respective functionary team, or the Arbitration Committee.

FAC help with a video game article

Hello! Apologies for the random message. I was thinking about nominating the Buffy the Vampire Slayer: Wrath of the Darkhul King for a FAC sometime this year, but I have never done one for a video game article. I am more much familiar with music and television articles in the FAC space.

After looking through the FAC mentoring page, I noticed your inclusion on the list with a focus on video games. I was wondering (if you had the time) to look at the article to see if it would be prepared for a FAC sometime this year. I believe that I have found all of the coverage for this particular game. My biggest concern is that the "Development and release" section is rather small, simply because information about these aspects of the game are relatively small.

Again, apologies for the message. Hope you are having a great week so far! Aoba47 (talk) 17:04, 21 February 2020 (UTC)

@Aoba47: Hi, sorry for the delay, my life has been very busy this past week. I should be able to take a look at it in the next few days. --PresN 03:18, 25 February 2020 (UTC)
Thank you for the response, and I completely understand. There is absolutely no rush for this so take as much time as you need. I hope that your life has been a good kind of busy. I can empathize as I also have quite a few off-Wiki things to get done. Hope you are having a great start to your week. Aoba47 (talk) 03:25, 25 February 2020 (UTC)
@Aoba47: It was the good kind of busy, thanks- Mardi Gras season in New Orleans is a crazy place. Anyways, comments:
  • In video game articles, typically the gameplay section comes before plot
  • "It does not have bonus content for completion." - It's a bit odd to list out something it doesn't have
  • "Wrath of the Darkhul King was developed by Natsume" - in the context of the rest of this sentence, this sounds like a person, not a Japanese video game company
  • "THQ handled the publishing in Agoura Hills, California." - kind of an odd aside, as the physical location of the publishing company is generally trivial.
  • "the game was shipped to North American stores the following month" - the next month would be July, but the very next sentence says it came out in late June. Needs clarification.
  • Video game articles typically do not talk about individual country's ratings unless there's something notable about them, nor that the game has a manual, again unless there's something notable about them
  • To be honest, the development section reads like you couldn't find much information about the actual development, and so scraped the barrel for any information about the release timeline.
  • That is true to be honest. Would the lack of information on the game's actual development prevent it from passing through the FAC? I honestly do not believe there is any more information out there as I have done multiple deep-dive searches. Aoba47 (talk) 22:35, 26 February 2020 (UTC)
  • Thank you for the response. Apologies for all of the messages. In the future, I will still try again to find more sources because something could hav slipped through the cracks. Aoba47 (talk) 01:56, 27 February 2020 (UTC)
  • Typically the section title is just "Reception", not "Critical reception"
  • While not disallowed, listing out the metacritic/gamerankings scores as numbers (as opposed to the verbal summary) is frowned on. Using Gamerankings at all, actually, in prose or the reception box is frowned on unless its score is notable different from MC's so as not to be duplicative
  • You'll probably get poked at at FAC for the uncited "thesis sentences" like "The gameplay was criticized." Check out some video game FAs for examples of how to reword them to not be standalone synthesis.
  • Opinions vary, but you'll likely get comments on the use of "review outlet X said blah", as opposed to "Joe Reviewer of review outlet X said" or "A review from review outlet X said". Up to you what you want to do about it.
  • There's a lot of repetition of short sentences structured like "X said a. Y said b. Z said c.". Try combining similar statements or playing with sentence structure.
  • Minor: the "References (Citations / Book source)" section headers are unusual, and the "Book source" especially reads oddly. I personally like just doing "References" and "Sources", though other systems exist as well.
Overall summary: the best things you could do prior to an FAC are to try to round up more development information and to do a copyedit pass for flowing prose, as opposed to just grammatically correct prose. User:JimmyBlackwing/Sourcing video game articles is a great resource for the former. --PresN 22:08, 26 February 2020 (UTC)
Thank you for the response. I greatly appreciate all of the suggestions, and I will slowly work on the article over the next few months as I would like to put this up a FAC later in the year. Gives me a lot of great starting points. Happy Mardi Gras! Aoba47 (talk) 22:26, 26 February 2020 (UTC)

Table-creating script

Your carnivore family lists (WP:Featured list candidates/List of procyonids/archive1) are fantastic. Does your table-creating script exist here on en.wp? If so, I'd like to fiddle around with it to see what it could do with plant families. - Dank (push to talk) 03:37, 29 February 2020 (UTC)

@Dank: Yeah, I haven't spent any time packaging it for use by other people or put it on github, as I just made it to help myself, but there's 2 python scripts: User:PresN/taxolistgenerator has WPTaxoListGenerator.py, which takes a family name and tries to build a structured json file, using Wikidata, MSW3, IUCN, and Wikipedia (for images). It's geared towards animals, and fails hard if it can't find an MSW3 id for a family... which of course non-mammals won't have, to say nothing of plants. Technically it's not needed, though, I started off making the json by hand. Either way, you feed the json to User:PresN/taxolistbuilder (WPTaxoListBuilder.py), which is much shorter- it just takes the json and tries to build wikitables out of it. It does some handy things like resize images to not stretch the tables and count how many species/subspecies are in a box in addition to enforcing formatting.
Like I said, though, I haven't tried to package it up for other people with coding experience to use, much less made it easy to use for non-programmers. Do you have any experience with python or programming? --PresN 04:11, 29 February 2020 (UTC)
Scripts aside, though, as part of this project I also created the {{Species table}} / {{Species table/row}} / {{Species table/end}} trio of templates, which in my opinion are much easier to edit than bare wikitables and help with making a list of any species. They're also geared towards animals in terms of wording (hunting/habitat), but that's easy enough to fork to a {{Plant species table/row}}. --PresN 04:17, 29 February 2020 (UTC)
It's been almost two decades since I did coding for school. Sorry, when you said "script", I was thinking user script. Your trio of templates should help a lot, though, thanks. - Dank (push to talk) 04:22, 29 February 2020 (UTC)
While I'm here, can I pick your brain about one of my FL reviews, WP:Featured list candidates/List of World Heritage Sites in Finland/archive1? The nominator doesn't want to provide any text (other than hovertext) that tells the reader what, for instance, "582" means. They believe that since other tables have done the same, it should be good enough. I would think at a minimum we'd want to see "Ref. No." in the column header, or better yet, something in a Key explaining what the numbers mean. Is this a reasonable ask, per the FL criteria? (I'm not going to quote you on this unless you want to be quoted.) - Dank (push to talk) 04:32, 29 February 2020 (UTC)
@Dank: Ironically, I think that's partially my fault- 2 years ago at Wikipedia:Featured list candidates/List of World Heritage Sites in Montenegro/archive1 I said '"UNESCO data (Ref; criteria)" is hard to parse- it's doing too much for a column header, and also not enough. I'd go with just "UNESCO data", and add a footnote (with {{efn}}) to explain that it has both the UNESCO reference id and the criteria that it fulfills; you need more than a couple words for that, and a footnote gives you all the space you need while not overfocusing a top-of-table note on a single column.' I guess they're going with hover text instead of a footnote? I'd still prefer a footnote, to be honest, but a key would work as well. --PresN 04:41, 29 February 2020 (UTC)
"UNESCO data (Ref; criteria)" is hard to parse- it's doing too much for a column header, and also not enough." makes a lot of sense to me. I think if they're at least attempting to be responsive to previous feedback, then that's good enough for me, I'll strike. - Dank (push to talk) 13:06, 29 February 2020 (UTC)

WikiCup 2020 March newsletter

And so ends the first round of the competition. Everyone with a positive score moves on to Round 2, with 57 contestants qualifying. We have abolished the groups this year, so to qualify for Round 3 you will need to finish Round 2 among the top thirty-two contestants.

Our top scorers in Round 1 were:

  • New York (state) Epicgenius, a WikiCup newcomer, led the field with a featured article, five good articles and an assortment of other submissions, specialising on buildings and locations in New York, for a total of 895 points.
  • England Gog the Mild came next with 464 points, from a featured article, two good articles and a number of reviews, the main theme being naval warfare.
  • United States Raymie was in third place with 419 points, garnered from one good article and an impressive 34 DYKs on radio and TV stations in the United States.
  • Somerset Harrias came next at 414, with a featured article and three good articles, an English civil war battle specialist.
  • Pirate flag CaptainEek was in fifth place with 405 points, mostly garnered from bringing Cactus wren to featured article status.
  • The top ten contestants at the end of Round 1 all scored over 200 points; they also included United States L293D, Venezuela Kingsif, Antarctica Enwebb, England Lee Vilenski and Nepal CAPTAIN MEDUSA. Seven of the top ten contestants in Round 1 are new to the WikiCup.

These contestants, like all the others, now have to start scoring points again from scratch. In Round 1 there were four featured articles, one featured list and two featured pictures, as well as around two hundred DYKs and twenty-seven ITNs. Between them, contestants completed 127 good article reviews, nearly a hundred more than the 43 good articles they claimed for, thus making a substantial dent in the review backlog. Contestants also claimed for 40 featured article / featured list reviews, and most even remembered to mention their WikiCup participation in their reviews (a requirement).

Remember that any content promoted after the end of Round 1 but before the start of Round 2 can be claimed in Round 2. Some contestants made claims before the new submissions pages were set up, and they will need to resubmit them. Invitations for collaborative writing efforts or any other discussion of potentially interesting work is always welcome on the WikiCup talk page. Remember, if two or more WikiCup competitors have done significant work on an article, all can claim points. If you are concerned that your nomination—whether it is at good article candidates, a featured process, or anywhere else—will not receive the necessary reviews, please list it on Wikipedia:WikiCup/Reviews.

If you want to help out with the WikiCup, please do your bit to keep down the review backlogs! Questions are welcome on Wikipedia talk:WikiCup, and the judges are reachable on their talk pages or by email. Good luck! If you wish to start or stop receiving this newsletter, please feel free to add or remove yourself from Wikipedia:WikiCup/Newsletter/Send. WikiCup newsletter correction

There was an error in the WikiCup 2020 March newsletter; United States L293D should not have been included in the list of top ten scorers in Round 1 (they led the list last year), instead, United States Dunkleosteus77 should have been included, having garnered 334 points from five good articles on animals, living or extinct, and various reviews. Administrators' newsletter – March 2020

News and updates for administrators from the past month (February 2020).

Guideline and policy news

  • Following an RfC, the blocking policy was changed to state that sysops must not undo or alter CheckUser or Oversight blocks, rather than should not.
  • A request for comment confirmed that sandboxes of established but inactive editors may not be blanked due solely to inactivity.

Technical news

  • Following a discussion, Twinkle's default CSD behavior will soon change, most likely this week. After the change, Twinkle will default to "tagging mode" if there is no CSD tag present, and default to "deletion mode" if there is a CSD tag present. You will be able to always default to "deletion mode" (the current behavior) using your Twinkle preferences.

How's the project been going? I've been busy for quite a while, but I'm never totally gone! Judgesurreal777 (talk) 14:14, 12 March 2020 (UTC)

@Judgesurreal777:Hey, nice to see you again! A bit slow for the past year and a half; we had a string of character articles get created and most GA'd by Abryn this fall, but that's about it- everyone seems to mostly be focusing on other projects around the wiki right now. Other than that, I cleared out the stubs at one point, though one's snuck back in, and occasional editors still poke at articles. --PresN 21:20, 12 March 2020 (UTC)

(Hopefully) Quick question

Hi PresN, I'm not sure this is possible since it would be an admin power or greater, but would you be able to tell me when this category was first created? I'm guessing either July or August 2008? No rush, but if you get the chance. You can see probably see why I'm asking from my edit history. :) -Thibbs (talk) 16:01, 13 March 2020 (UTC)

@Thibbs: the first edit there is "(diff) 18:47, February 17, 2007 . . Cydebot (talk | contribs | block) m 638 bytes (Robot: Moved from Category:A-Class computer and video game articles. Authors: CyberSkull, Jacoplane, BcRIPster)", and the original category's start edit was "17:58, June 11, 2006 . . CyberSkull (talk | contribs | block) 511 bytes", so June 2006, same as the other class-categories. And yeah, I see what you're doing- that graph reminds me of something (which is way out of date). --PresN 16:10, 13 March 2020 (UTC)
Don't recall when A-class was invented, though the class categories appear to have been created the same time as the VG-specific ones (I guess that's just when the talk page assessment category tree was invented in general), but it appears to have existed as far back as September 2005. --PresN 21:46, 13 March 2020 (UTC)
@Thibbs: Well, looks like you have the start of A-class, and I guess you're just tracking when the newsletter reported totals, but as an aside, the automated assessment tables started running for WikiProject Computer and Video games on June 12, 2006 (at the now deleted Wikipedia:Version 1.0 Editorial Team/Computer and video game articles by quality statistics), which was transcluded onto at least Wikipedia:WikiProject Video games/Assessment when it started in January 2007 and probably somewhere else before. When the project got renamed to just Video games, the automated table moved to a new page on February 21, 2007. --PresN 22:01, 13 March 2020 (UTC)
  • Very interesting! I've already added some, but I can see that I'll have to pore over those materials some more this weekend. Thanks again! -Thibbs (talk) 02:01, 14 March 2020 (UTC)

DMC4 Special Edition

While working in Devil May Cry 4 I found there was a lot of content about its updated form released about five years later (Special Edition) for new consoles. As a result, I worked in a sandbox to see if it has potential. Here you can read the sandbox. I'm not sure if it's okay if Special Edition could have its own article but I think it might be the best at least for the vanilla one. I asked in the project and discord but no responses yet. Anyway, take care.Tintor2 (talk) 20:08, 1 April 2020 (UTC)

@Tintor2: I think it's good to go, you have a decent size dev and reception section and while the differences may be borderline, they do exist, it's more than a remaster with upgraded textures. Give it a pass for grammar ("The original game featured these two as playable characters with he Special Edition features Vergil, Lady and Trish") and post it, I think. --PresN 23:47, 1 April 2020 (UTC)
Thanks. I kinda used the article remaster of FFX and FFX-2 as a model. Will request a major copyedit.Tintor2 (talk) 00:32, 2 April 2020 (UTC)

Grade II* listed buildings in Monmouthshire

Hi PresN - sorry to chase but I'm wondering if there's anything more I need to do with the FLC for this, Grade II* listed buildings in Monmouthshire? It's been up a month now and has four Supports, an Accessibility review and a Passed Source review. I did ask on the FLC Talkpage whether it needed an Image review but haven't had a reply. I'd quite like to wrap it up fairly shortly if possible as I've an FAC I'm keen to get to and, being a bear of little brain, I can't multi-task two FAs. Grateful for any advice. Thanks and regards, KJP1 (talk) 13:38, 10 April 2020 (UTC)

@KJP1: Hi, sorry, I've been dealing with a lot of stuff in my personal life and haven't been updating FLC for a few weeks now, and it seems the other directors are in a similar state. I plan on doing a pass through this evening or tomorrow, and this list should be promoted then. Image reviews are not currently an explicit requirement. --PresN 14:47, 10 April 2020 (UTC)
PresN - absolutely no apology necessary! These are challenging times and I hope you and yours are staying safe. There is no rush at all. Keep well. KJP1 (talk) 16:25, 10 April 2020 (UTC)

FL help

Hi PresN, I hope you are well. You previously gave me some handy hints on FLs. Specifically, working on the 2019 in cue sports article. Could you let me know what other things I could do to expand/improve past a FL nomination? I think I need to expand on what the criteria is; but if you have any further information, please let me know (thanks for your help). Best Wishes, Lee Vilenski (talkcontribs) 10:48, 17 April 2020 (UTC)

@Lee Vilenski:
  • You don't need to twist the lead sentence to get the exact phrase "2019 in cue sports", which would help not repeating cue sports twice.
  • "event's still" - no apostrophe
  • There's a spaced-dash on 27 April – 7 May in pool, rest are unspaced. There's a few more in Snooker.
  • In the references you italicize some but not all sources, and sometimes use a bare url as the source- maybe that is their name, but for example I'd expect to see AZBilliards.com, not azbilliards.com, as they seem to capitalize it like that on their website.
  • The tables themselves seem good. I'd maybe mention more about the tournaments in the lead beyond the 4 world tournaments. --PresN 21:47, 17 April 2020 (UTC)
Thanks for taking a look at this for me. I'll try and expand on the lede. Any ideas what sort of things I should be including? My temptation is to go into too much depth, I think. Best Wishes, Lee Vilenski (talkcontribs) 19:40, 18 April 2020 (UTC)

C is for “Cqueenix”

Could you help me look at the Start articles, and identify how many are actual Starts? From my reading of the criteria, most of them are actually C level already, because almost all of them have half a dozen references or more, and nearly all are correctly formatted and in generally an encyclopedic tone. “Content gaps” is the first thing a C article is listed as having, and no reliable sources is the first thing a Start-level article is listed as having, so that would make most of our Starts actually C’s! I would do it myself, but I’d feel better if someone with more “authority” altered a bunch of their level statuses. Thoughts? Hope you are well! Judgesurreal777 (talk) 00:05, 21 April 2020 (UTC)

Will answer at WTSE. --PresN 15:27, 22 April 2020 (UTC)

New video game articles section

Hi there. I recently created a section in Wikipedia:WikiProject Video games for the SpongeBob SquarePants video games article, however I noticed that a few days later you followed up with a new section called "New articles in April 2020". My article was published on April 19th, and although I see it on the AlexNewArtBot list, I don't see it on yours, which is said to be more accurate. Can you explain why this is please? --Osh33m (talk) 15:39, 21 April 2020 (UTC)

@Osh33m: Timing, mostly. You created the article on the 19th, but didn't put the talk page template on until the 20th. The 1.0 bot picked up that talk page addition (or rather, the new inclusion of your article into the WPVG articles-by-quality categories) in the daily run at the start of April 21, as seen at the log, and then my script uses that page to generate the list. Even though I didn't post my list until the start of April 21, I only ran it for April 13-19 (I was a bit late this week), so it just missed your article. It will pick up your article next week (April 20-26), and assign it to the 20th- just verified that.
The reason it shows up for AlexNewArtBot earlier is because the 1.0 bot is tracking wikiproject additions, but Alex looks at articles upon creation and guesses what the subject matter is. Yours is clearly about a video game, which is not quite the same thing as being covered by WPVG, which is why I don't use that bot. --PresN 19:51, 21 April 2020 (UTC)
@PresN: OK, so as long as the article does eventually get picked up then I guess there is no problem (and you're saying it will be picked up next week). The main reason I want to bring attention to it is because I need help filling sections of the article; namely the Development, Gameplay, and opening. I asked for help in the Wikipedia:WikiProject_Video_games but it was futile. Osh33m (talk) 18:56, 22 April 2020 (UTC)

A request for you:

Hi, I'm Aya Syameimaru! I think you should improve Quake (video game) to GA status, because one of the Commander Keen episodes said that a video game known as Quake was coming soon. It was gonna be an RPG, then it became FPS. Can you please improve the Quake (video game) article to GA status, it deserves attention. «I'm Aya Syameimaru!I文々。新聞Iuserbako» 13:05, 24 April 2020 (UTC)

@I'm Aya Syameimaru!: Hopefully one day! I got through all the Keen games, then Wolfenstein 3D, then Development of Doom... then stalled out, and never finished the main Doom article or got to Quake (which would have been next). I would like to pick that project back up, though, so I'll take this as encouragement. --PresN 13:30, 24 April 2020 (UTC)

WikiCup 2020 May newsletter

The second round of the 2020 WikiCup has now finished. It was a high-scoring round and contestants needed 75 points to advance to round 3. There were some very impressive efforts in round 2, with the top ten contestants all scoring more than 500 points. A large number of the points came from the 12 featured articles and the 186 good articles achieved in total by contestants, and the 355 good article reviews they performed; the GAN backlog drive and the stay-at-home imperative during the COVID-19 pandemic may have been partially responsible for these impressive figures.

Our top scorers in round 2 were:

  • New York (state) Epicgenius, with 2333 points from one featured article, forty-five good articles, fourteen DYKs and plenty of bonus points
  • England Gog the Mild, with 1784 points from three featured articles, eight good articles, a substantial number of featured article and good article reviews and lots of bonus points
  • Botswana The Rambling Man, with 1262 points from two featured articles, eight good articles and a hundred good article reviews
  • Somerset Harrias, with 1141 points from two featured articles, three featured lists, ten good articles, nine DYKs and a substantial number of featured article and good article reviews
  • England Lee Vilenski with 869 points, Gondor Hog Farm with 801, Venezuela Kingsif with 719, Cascadia (independence movement) SounderBruce with 710, United States Dunkleosteus77 with 608 and Mexico MX with 515.

The rules for featured article reviews have been adjusted; reviews may cover three aspects of the article, content, images and sources, and contestants may receive points for each of these three types of review. Please also remember the requirement to mention the WikiCup when undertaking an FAR for which you intend to claim points. Remember also that DYKs cannot be claimed until they have appeared on the main page. As we enter the third round, any content promoted after the end of round 2 but before the start of round 3 can be claimed now, and anything you forgot to claim in round 2 cannot! Remember too, that you must claim your points within 14 days of "earning" them. When doing GARs, please make sure that you check that all the GA criteria are fully met.

If you are concerned that your nomination—whether it is at good article nominations, a featured process, or anything else—will not receive the necessary reviews, please list it on Wikipedia:WikiCup/Reviews Needed (remember to remove your listing when no longer required). Questions are welcome on Wikipedia talk:WikiCup, and the judges are reachable on their talk pages or by email. Good luck! If you wish to start or stop receiving this newsletter, please feel free to add or remove your name from Wikipedia:WikiCup/Newsletter/Send. Quick question: when John and I have finished the lists such as Botanical Latin adjectives (T–Z) for G through Z, is it acceptable to nominate one of the lists at WP:FLC, as long as A through F are finished within say 3 weeks? My understanding is all the lists have to be created in order for any of them to pass, but I don't know what the deadline is. - Dank (push to talk) 15:06, 11 May 2020 (UTC)

@Dank: I'd think so? Assuming you're referring to the Stearn's FLC comments, I think the question is actually "what would it take for Reywas92 not to oppose over it", which is not a question I can answer. Whether reviewers take issue with an alphabetical split where the list for the other half of the alphabet doesn't exist is up to them. --PresN 03:53, 12 May 2020 (UTC)
Hypothetical: if Reywas92 opposes early on, solely over the lack of other lists, would you be willing to give me 3 weeks to create the lists rather than archiving immediately? (I get the sense that archiving doesn't happen quickly at FLC in any event, but I'd prefer to nail this down so I don't come across as someone who didn't know or intended to flout the rules.) - Dank (push to talk) 04:02, 12 May 2020 (UTC) P.S. If you'd rather not say, that's fine of course. - Dank (push to talk) 05:14, 12 May 2020 (UTC)
@Dank: Yeah, we're not fast at FLC usually, and if you get an oppose for the missing sibling list I'm willing to wait a bit for it to appear. I don't think you need to worry about that, the other delegates and I are willing to extend good faith on something like that. --PresN 05:17, 12 May 2020 (UTC)

It says it has unreliable sources from January 2019 I believe, but they have no idea what they are, do you??? Judgesurreal777 (talk) 06:14, 16 May 2020 (UTC)

@Judgesurreal777: It's this sentence: The Keyblade transformations active the various "Formchanges"<ref name="USGamerReview" />–Power, Guard,<ref name="DriveForms" /><ref name="DriveForms2" /> Magic,<ref name="DriveForms2" /> and Speed–<ref name="DriveForms2" />{{better source|date=January 2019}} and change Sora's outfit,<ref name="DriveForms2" /> similarly to the "Drive Form" mechanic in ''Kingdom Hearts II''.<ref name="DriveForms" /> --PresN 14:44, 16 May 2020 (UTC)
Incredible, buried like 9 floors underground... Thanks again, as always! And congratulations on your Featured Article! You have no idea how many people I have shown your articles to in the last few years when I would make small talk. What were the first video games I would say? And then I would show them these pages, and they were fascinated. Judgesurreal777 (talk) 14:50, 16 May 2020 (UTC)

Reference column

I notice some gameography lists have a right hand column for “references”, could you add one to Koichi Sugiyama, Toshiro Tsuchida, and most importantly Nobuo Uematsu? I would do it, but I don’t know how! Judgesurreal777 (talk) 04:37, 17 May 2020 (UTC)

@Judgesurreal777: Done, I just used the visual editor to add a column at the end of each table; the resulting wikicode isn't as good as it could be but the columns are there. --PresN 05:39, 17 May 2020 (UTC)
Thanks much, this way I can continue gameography palooza. Thanks again! Judgesurreal777 (talk) 15:37, 17 May 2020 (UTC)
@Judgesurreal777: You're doing a crazy amount of long-overdue cleanup on all these articles! Let me know if you need anything else! --PresN 02:48, 18 May 2020 (UTC)
Well... :) Since you asked, could you please look at Star Ocean when you get the chance? I can’t seem to find anything on the series, and I can’t seem to get it to C status! Any help at all on that would be good, I want to get ride of it’s cleanup tags. If you have time! Judgesurreal777 (talk) 05:01, 18 May 2020 (UTC)

Has potentially dated statements still, do you know what’s causing that? Judgesurreal777 (talk) 01:00, 20 May 2020 (UTC)

@Judgesurreal777: The {{As of}} template does that; it's the bit in Reception: "As of April 2020, the series has sold over 154.5 million units worldwide." (I know because I removed it from a few other articles a few days ago). I'd just un-template it; the as of template is supposed to be used for things that go out of date and should be regularly updated, like how many runs have been scored in an ongoing baseball season, but series sales are not something that's regularly available. --PresN 01:36, 20 May 2020 (UTC)
Once again my eternal thanks! Judgesurreal777 (talk) 01:39, 20 May 2020 (UTC)

Missing Periodical

You have been such an invaluable partner, I wonderful I could ask you to keep helping me. Since you fix them like lightning, and when I tried it you had to fix what I had done, could you fix the last six article with “CS1 errors: missing periodical (6)”? I am intent on dealing with the stuff like “game needs citation”, or “section expanded”, but I need help on these more technical matters :) Judgesurreal777 (talk) 16:14, 20 May 2020 (UTC)

@Judgesurreal777: Done! --PresN 18:46, 20 May 2020 (UTC)

Something Nice!

This is not related to the above request I promise! It’s long overdue.

The Stub Barnstar
I, Judgesurreal777, award PresN the Stub Barnstar in recognition of his years of work to keep our Stubs strong and growing into Starts and Beyond! Judgesurreal777 (talk) 17:24, 20 May 2020 (UTC)

The Last (Cleanup) Story

If you have the time at some point, could you look at the 8 articles that have no title in a reference? After that, I think every other cleanup tag is “me addressable”, and it would greatly take down the number of tags. Judgesurreal777 (talk) 00:27, 21 May 2020 (UTC)

  • Hey a question about this, is it a matter of changing the reference template so it doesn’t ask for it anymore, because I don’t think it always did? Or if not, I could just try to research and replace them one at a time. Judgesurreal777 (talk) 17:42, 22 May 2020 (UTC)
    • @Judgesurreal777: Nah, I think they're all probably legit and different. Characters of the Final Fantasy XIII series, fo instance, looks like it's a magazine article that doesn't have a title set. It definitely should- it at least has a page number so it's findable, but not having a title is a legit error. I'm not sure there's a cite template out there where "title" isn't required, it's one of the most important fields. --PresN 19:45, 22 May 2020 (UTC)
      • The annoyance is that all 8 of them are from Japanese magazines, so getting (and writing!) the title is a huge pain. Zack Fair is the only one that's really bad, though, since it doesn't even have a page number, just the magazine name and month. May be worth just putting in a filler title for these, even if it's wrong- if it's clearly an interview with someone, maybe put the title as "Person X interview" just to fill in the field. The purpose of the cite fields is to make the source findable, after all, and "Person X interview on page 50 of issue whatever" is pretty clear. --PresN 19:49, 22 May 2020 (UTC)
Thank you for that information, I’ll do that then. Judgesurreal777 (talk) 20:02, 22 May 2020 (UTC)
For clarity, ProtoDrake appears to be not long from replacing the whole Unlimited SaGa article, such as his wont, so that issue may be gone soon, and I asked Tintor2 to find the untitled sources titles for the sources he added to Zack Fair and Sephiroth. So I will look into the remaining 5.Judgesurreal777 (talk) 20:06, 22 May 2020 (UTC)
Ok, they all have titles now, some had translations hidden in the wiki text and some references were already labeled “personinterview”. Cleanup rolls on! Judgesurreal777 (talk) 21:43, 22 May 2020 (UTC)

Someone has put cleanup tags on the legacy section for months, and wont produce the references they say will “fix” it. I say months is enough, and have removed them, with explanation on the talk page to either produce them, or don’t, but you cant just have cleanup tags on an FA forever and then withhold help, as the user appears to be doing. Just thought you should know. Judgesurreal777 (talk) 17:00, 23 May 2020 (UTC)

@Judgesurreal777: Ugh. I don't even disagree with them about such vague statements needing stronger/clearer sources, and I very much don't think that being an FA exempts any article from being tagged, but the sheer wordiness of everything they say is giving me a headache. Lengthy comments in the cite needed tags, entire essays on the talk page, "oh, I have citations, but I want you, my friend, to find citations yourself"... Bleh. The article could definitely be improved and tightened up, but once again we find an editor who manages to spend a lot of people's time discussing an issue in a circle without actually fixing even one problem. That's frankly my pet peeve on Wikipedia; I agree with dropping the tags and starting fresh. A single tag on the section with a summary of the general issue (broad statements being made without enough supporting citations) would have sufficed. --PresN 01:30, 24 May 2020 (UTC)
Ok I tagged the section, hopefully we can polish it up at least. Judgesurreal777 (talk) 01:40, 24 May 2020 (UTC)

Dragon Quest Media article

Just so you know, I brought up this idea on the SQENIX Wikipage, but I mostly want to know what you think about it, yay or nay. I don’t know how to get ride of those starts otherwise. Judgesurreal777 (talk) 01:41, 24 May 2020 (UTC)

@Judgesurreal777: I'm torn. On one hand, it's really an obvious eyesore on the index page- a pack of five Start articles + 2 junky lists. On the other, it is a little unorthodox to merge five distinct manga/anime series together just because they're based on the same video game franchise- WP:ANIME seems to have it's own sprawling norms, which is why I haven't re-merged the two lists even though they add literally nothing beside chapter/episode titles. I guess I'm in favor- it doesn't seem like, after a decade of no real improvement, anyone is going to swoop down and write good articles on a bunch of mediocre obscure series, but it does seem like it would take a lot of work to make the resulting article be a cohesive whole, since you'd have to tie them together in how they're related beyond having Dragon Quest in the names. --PresN 02:22, 24 May 2020 (UTC)

It’s also a question of where to merge, into the main Dragon Quest article, or the list of dragon quest media, or a new article? I’m not sure either.

I also think we should create and “Early Square games” article and a “square Enix mobile exclusive” article. We need these kind of parent articles to merge the stubby article together into. They just aren’t notable enough on their own, but they could make one solid whole. See what I mean? Judgesurreal777 (talk) 02:44, 24 May 2020 (UTC)

FLC

Currently at FLC, there is a huge backlog. Can you look into it. Thanks.~~ CAPTAIN MEDUSAtalk 13:33, 24 May 2020 (UTC)

The Age of C!

With the Starts dwindling to a near impossible core, that I will never give up on, I want to suggest that it is time for a “articles B or above” bar graph for the index and the main wikiproject page, and change the guidance to all new articles should immediately become C’s not Starts. After all, if they have no references, they shouldn’t have made an article anyway right? Judgesurreal777 (talk) 13:38, 28 May 2020 (UTC)

Added, and I agree- time to move the minimum bar from "actually has content" to "actually has sourced content"! --PresN 14:10, 28 May 2020 (UTC)
Thanks for the barnstar! It’s my first one in several years, and it feels like I’m back now. Where do we put the guidance about all new articles should go to C level ASAP? Judgesurreal777 (talk) 15:25, 28 May 2020 (UTC)
Not sure- we don't actually have anything explicit now about new articles not being stubs, it's just something we do. I guess on the main WPSE page? It's not like it's a binding rule, it's just a statement of intention. --PresN 02:07, 30 May 2020 (UTC)
Ok, I thought we had it written down somewhere, so never mind! Judgesurreal777 (talk) 03:38, 30 May 2020 (UTC)
We Do actually! It’s on the article index page! I knew I had seen it written somewhere, I thought I was crazy! Judgesurreal777 (talk) 16:32, 30 May 2020 (UTC)

Merge?

Front Mission 2089-II ProtoDrake says he found nothing for this article, so that’s like ten votes for merger. He says the best place is Front Mission 2089, since our article to merge is its sequel. Would you please merge it? I do merges so badly, and you do them so well! Judgesurreal777 (talk) 17:01, 29 May 2020 (UTC)

Merge train has gone through! I guess even in the Japanese press, sources on minor sequels to minor phone games are hard to come by. --PresN 02:06, 30 May 2020 (UTC)
Especially for a series that the more I research it, the less successful it seems to have been. Left Alive was very ambitious but had bad guys that jumped in the air when they died, like it’s the original Goldeneye or something, so the gameplay defeated it. Judgesurreal777 (talk) 16:34, 30 May 2020 (UTC)
Ok I have two more merges, even less content total though I think. ProtoDrake says he couldn’t find anything for these either our last two cleanup tagged articles. Dragon Quest (TV series) and Dragon Quest Retsuden: Roto no Monshō. Would you do the honors of merging these to the Dragon Quest article and eliminating our last cleanup tags from the entire Wikiproject? Judgesurreal777 (talk) 18:17, 31 May 2020 (UTC)
@Judgesurreal777: Just proposed merging the two dragon quest animanga lists into the parent article; I'd just be bold but I know some people have been editing that page since there's a new anime adaptation coming out this fall. --PresN 15:57, 1 June 2020 (UTC)
I also proposed merging Final Fantasy: World Wide Words, it has basically nothing, so I proposed it be merged (redirected). Judgesurreal777 (talk) 16:06, 1 June 2020 (UTC)
Will support that discussion; just left a support on the DQ merge- since there is a discussion section, I'd prefer to wait at least a few days for any other comments before merging, if for no other reason to give a handy link to use if someone later recreates without addressing the reason they were merged in the first place. --PresN 16:13, 1 June 2020 (UTC)
I added one more merge proposal for another article that isn’t notable enough (says ProtoDrake) for merger into Dragon Quest just FYI. Judgesurreal777 (talk) 21:32, 1 June 2020 (UTC)
How long is the normal period for waiting for these last six merges? Once you do this, we will be at zero Starts/Lists, all C’s and above. Judgesurreal777 (talk) 17:50, 3 June 2020 (UTC)
Sorry to bother you, but ping! Think it’s time? Judgesurreal777 (talk) 18:29, 6 June 2020 (UTC)
Yeah, it's been about a week, so I think we can start merging. I'm about to head out soon, so I'll start on it this evening. --PresN 18:56, 6 June 2020 (UTC)

3 Cleanup tags left

Just so you know. Judgesurreal777 (talk) 23:45, 30 May 2020 (UTC)

Two left! Judgesurreal777 (talk) 01:51, 31 May 2020 (UTC)
In 2011-12-07 Out of 367 Articles, 189 had cleanup tags, and total tags amounted to 328. Now about to be zero. Judgesurreal777 (talk) 18:43, 31 May 2020 (UTC)
Hooray! It was your project proposal in the first place, and it's great that it's finally done all these years later! --PresN 23:32, 31 May 2020 (UTC)
Amazing how time flies! Well, I double checked everything, once the above merger of the two lightly notable articles is done, we will be at zero! We don’t have to launch a discussion do we? ProtoDrake checked, and couldn’t find anything. Judgesurreal777 (talk) 00:49, 1 June 2020 (UTC)
You don't "have" to, though it's always possible someone will complain that there wasn't a formal discussion, but that's up to you. --PresN 02:40, 1 June 2020 (UTC)

Unfit URL

Live a Live has this minor tag, which ref is causing it? Judgesurreal777 (talk) 21:57, 31 May 2020 (UTC)

@Judgesurreal777: Fixed- it was a holdover from someone originally using an archive.org link as a url, and when the archive bot came through it just marked the url as "unfit" because you're not supposed to do that but it doesn't fix it for you without a human looking at it- looks like it got fixed at some point but the "url-status=unfit" was left. --PresN 23:31, 31 May 2020 (UTC)

Arbitration

  • A motion was passed to enact a 500/30 restriction on articles related to the history of Jews and antisemitism in Poland during World War II (1933–45), including the Holocaust in Poland. Article talk pages where disruption occurs may also be managed with the stated restriction.

Hey, it’s a C now with no cleanup tags, but I can’t believe as much as I have looked, under both her names, I can’t find more info on her, she’s like a ghost! If you get the chance, could you take a look? It’s a weird C, with four references but lots of info. I’d like it expanded! Judgesurreal777 (talk) 18:45, 1 June 2020 (UTC)

GA’s that need reference columns :)

These are our GA biographies that have lists of their works, but need a reference column. I did experiment with adding them myself in the visual editor, and bad things happened... so if you would? :) Judgesurreal777 (talk) 14:02, 2 June 2020 (UTC)

@Judgesurreal777: Hmm, I'm not sure any of those are fully WP:ACCESS compliant (which isn't a good look, seeing as Kikuta was one of mine...), but pretty much no tables on-wiki are if they don't use a template. In any case, they now all have reference columns! --PresN 02:23, 3 June 2020 (UTC)

Article Index graph

Could you update it when you get a chance? I’d love to see what our collective efforts look like in visual form! :) Judgesurreal777 (talk) 15:15, 3 June 2020 (UTC)

@Judgesurreal777: Updated, though it's not as dramatic as you may hope- not only does the graph cover 13 years, so the last month is pretty short, but a the date cutoff is right at 00:00 June 1, and the next two days saw almost half of the drop in starts. Still pretty sweet, though- next month's update will make it look even better. --PresN 23:23, 3 June 2020 (UTC)

I think this article needs some protection, because of the “allegations” there is constant vandalism on both sides. Just to reduce your workload. Judgesurreal777 (talk) 14:31, 6 June 2020 (UTC)

Last merges

Ok, I did a redirect of the typing Final fantasy game, could you merge the other five articles? You are better than I am at it and have a better eye for what should be brought over, if anything. You get the honor of merging our last starts and lists! Judgesurreal777 (talk) 19:45, 7 June 2020 (UTC)

I'm sure you've seen the flurry of edit notices, but all done! We now have the only C+ wikiproject of actual size ever! --PresN 02:44, 8 June 2020 (UTC)
Amazing, I can’t believe it all really happened! If we get a majority GA, we should tell the Signpost, this team deserves a feature, God knows Wikipedia should know that a lot of good is still happening in this free knowledge movement! Judgesurreal777 (talk) 03:23, 8 June 2020 (UTC)

Might need to guard to dragon quest merges, someone is undoing them. Judgesurreal777 (talk) 15:29, 8 June 2020 (UTC)

New Articles (June 1 to June 7) Feature Request

Hello, I noticed you posted the list of new article on the Wikipedia talk:WikiProject Video games page. However, I noticed that my article for Clubhouse Games: 51 Worldwide Classics which was accepted on 2 June was absent from the list. Is it meant to be left off or was it a mistake? Thank you. Captain Galaxy (talk) 20:52, 8 June 2020 (UTC)

Commented at WT:VG; something caused the article assessment bot to hiccup when recording the draft->mainspace move, so my script didn't see it. Now added. --PresN 02:03, 9 June 2020 (UTC)

References columns!

This is my little side project, to reference every game credit of all our game artists, composers, writers, etc. Please? Judgesurreal777 (talk) 04:01, 11 June 2020 (UTC)

Done! --PresN 02:31, 13 June 2020 (UTC)
Thanks a million! Could you do this one too? I nominated it for GA as the last of our twelve nominees: Isamu Kamikokuryo. Judgesurreal777 (talk) 03:12, 14 June 2020 (UTC)
Done. --PresN 21:12, 16 June 2020 (UTC)

This is the greatest article on Wikipedia, other than Computer Space of course. It is probably intimidating to a lot of the newbies, I wanted to ask if you would consider doing its GA review. It’s massive, but it’s ProtoDrake, so it’s amazing already so it shouldn’t be too hard. And this way, you get a barnstar for helping with the Good Article drive at the end! Judgesurreal777 (talk) 03:13, 12 June 2020 (UTC)

Reliable music sources

I need some guidance on what’s reliable or not. Video game Music Database? Video game music online? Cocobiz? Square Music Online? The artists own website? Other ones? I need to know what is verifiable and what is not, I think I’ve unknowingly used some that are not reliable. Judgesurreal777 (talk) 03:58, 13 June 2020 (UTC)

VGMdb: no, it's user-contributed without editors (though, I generally assume it's correct). Cocoebiz: it's Iwata's old personal site, yeah? SEMO: that got moved to vgmonline.net years back (though maybe not everything moved?) That's an RS. Artist's own websites are presumed reliable but don't count for notability. Other ones upon asking, though I've used RPGfan and Original Sound Version a lot. --PresN 05:40, 13 June 2020 (UTC)
Just to be clear, “don’t count towards notability” means try not to use them? Judgesurreal777 (talk) 12:01, 13 June 2020 (UTC)
Yeah, try to use other sources, but they're fine to use if it's all you have as long as the article isn't solely based on them. --PresN 14:49, 13 June 2020 (UTC)
Ok, just a few more: Rocketbaby, legends of localization, shmuplations? Judgesurreal777 (talk) 15:15, 13 June 2020 (UTC)
I ask because I don’t know whether to use these sources or not to fill in the music references. Judgesurreal777 (talk) 18:04, 15 June 2020 (UTC)
Eh, I don't really remember rocketbaby too well- not sure it was an RS? LoL seems legit, it's a professional site now with books. Shmupulations is kind of a gray area- the site itself shouldn't be cited, but the actual work they're translating. --PresN 21:10, 16 June 2020 (UTC)
Thanks so much! This info is very good for me to have. Judgesurreal777 (talk) 21:15, 16 June 2020 (UTC)

Can you merge this to Luminous Productions? Won’t be big enough for its own article for a bit I think. Judgesurreal777 (talk) 00:43, 14 June 2020 (UTC)

Done, waaaay too early for an article. 5 sentences of sources saying "this project exists" and literally nothing else. --PresN 03:45, 14 June 2020 (UTC)

TFL notification

Hi, PresN. I'm just posting to let you know that World Fantasy Award—Life Achievement – a list that you have been heavily involved with – has been chosen to appear on the Main Page as Today's featured list for July 3. The TFL blurb can be seen here. If you have any thoughts on the selection, please post them on my talk page or at TFL talk. Regards, Giants2008 (Talk) 22:22, 15 June 2020 (UTC)

Square Enix A class articles

What is A class used for? We got ride of it so many years ago I forget why it existed. Was it a staging ground for FA? Would it be useful to us now that we approach 200+ GA’s? Judgesurreal777 (talk) 20:55, 16 June 2020 (UTC)

I think we only had it because it was part of the default set. It was "better than GA, but not nominated for FA yet", and the VG project had a process for getting an article reviewed as A-class, but that was barely used. Without a process, it's a meaningless distinction- if you think something is better than GA, might as well nominate it for FA. When VG dropped the class entirely, we did too. --PresN 21:07, 16 June 2020 (UTC)
Ok understood. Judgesurreal777 (talk) 21:12, 16 June 2020 (UTC)

Problem user

Can you tell User:Amaterus Machines to stop altering the Square article? Square no longer exists so it’s not in business, and I’m tired of fixing every day as he changes it. Judgesurreal777 (talk) 00:50, 18 June 2020 (UTC)

Why is it always the newbie users that I take the time to write a sincere message to that ignore everything and keep making the same edit over and over? I'll block them next revert, which I have no doubt will be tomorrow without any attempt to actually communicate what they are thinking. --PresN 03:28, 19 June 2020 (UTC)

2020 Square Enix Majority Drive

The Barnstar of High Culture
I, Judgesurreal777, Hereby award you the The Barnstar of High Culture for your work on the drive. What can I say now that I haven’t already said in the last decade? Without you, there would be no project at all, for no one would have kept the lights on and helped guide us as users slowly retired or took extended breaks (Including Me!) In a way, you are Wikiproject Square Enix, and this is your victory. We have achieved what I never thought really possible, and I look forward to what we may dream of for the future! Judgesurreal777 (talk) 02:51, 18 June 2020 (UTC)

My Barnstar Page

Mine looks kinda... janky. Yours looks slick! If you get a chance, could you help me format it to look like yours? Judgesurreal777 (talk) 02:54, 19 June 2020 (UTC)

Haha, I'll try. --PresN 02:56, 19 June 2020 (UTC)
I Don’t Like it, I Love it! :) Thanks that’s much better! Judgesurreal777 (talk) 03:18, 19 June 2020 (UTC)
No problem! --PresN 03:28, 19 June 2020 (UTC)

Nintendo Times

  • Weird- [2] - it's new reviews/news, written for what was happening 30 years ago as if they were writing then. So it's a review of Rad Racer written as if it had just come out and they didn't know about any newer games. Besides being strange, I'm not sure that site is an RS- almost the entire thing is written by Craig Majaski, with occasional other reviewers. --PresN 15:35, 20 June 2020 (UTC)
They do however have a lot of scans of a Newsletter called “Nintendo Fun Club” which looks like it is a real periodical or fan magazine from the time and that part might be useful. Have you ever heard of this magazine? Is it RS? Judgesurreal777 (talk) 16:17, 20 June 2020 (UTC)
Nintendo Fun Club --PresN 16:52, 20 June 2020 (UTC)

Columns Part V

Hate to ask, but... Yasumi Matsuno and Hiroyuki Ito reference columns? :) Judgesurreal777 (talk) 16:31, 20 June 2020 (UTC)

Done! --PresN 22:31, 22 June 2020 (UTC)

Hi there! I would appreciate your imput on my FLC named above, but feel free to disregard in case you're too busy. I hope you have a wonderful weekend! Greets; Cartoon network freak (talk) 06:59, 21 June 2020 (UTC)

A question

Hi, PresN. I am your reader and awaiting you Doom:-P

Well. I'm wondering that a plenty of FAs/GAs you (and many other WPVG veterans) have contributed to, but just a few of DYKs have got. In contrast, in my wiki, most of senior editors wrote dozens of DYKs, but only promoted several FAs/GAs (which also expanded in their personal sandboxes, and published as new articles for DYK nominee). As you know, DYK is not a high bar - even Start-Class articles can be successful nominated - and a GA absolutely meet a DYK's requirements (at least in content). That is to say, you seasoned editors could have nominated many of your FAs/FLs/GAs to DYKs, but I found nobody did it.

So my question is, why seasoned editors lack of the motivation? For instance, considered DYK as newcomers' training ground?--Lopullinen 15:25, 22 June 2020 (UTC)

@Lopullinen: I can't speak for anyone else, but for me, I like writing articles to make them as good as possible- to that end, GA/FA is getting other people to review the articles to make sure they're good. DYK, on the other hand, is just advertising a new article on the main page- I just don't usually find it enticing enough to spend the time making a nomination and reviewing someone else's. --PresN 16:31, 22 June 2020 (UTC)
Thank you for your reply!--Lopullinen 17:09, 22 June 2020 (UTC)

“Category:Harv and Sfn no-target errors” - This error shows up for this article, what is it? And how do we stop it? Judgesurreal777 (talk) 15:11, 23 June 2020 (UTC)

It's because there's a Harvnb template that's pointing to a source (Vestal) that's not listed anywhere; I had to go back to 2013 to find the actual source it's been broken so long. Fixed now! --PresN 15:43, 23 June 2020 (UTC)
Weird that the error surfaced now after all this time! Judgesurreal777 (talk) 17:30, 23 June 2020 (UTC)
Yeah, I've never seen it before in the cleanup list- I wonder if that category was recently added? Oh, it must have been- the category itself got created on April 22, I bet CleanupWorklistBot added the category as a "cleanup" cat only last week. --PresN 21:57, 23 June 2020 (UTC)
