Welcome to the 2011 WikiCup!

Hello, happy new year and welcome to the 2011 WikiCup! Your submissions' page can be found here and instructions of how to update the page can be found here and on the submissions' page itself. From the submissions' page, a bot will update the main scoresheet. Our rules have been very slightly updated from last year; the full rules can be found here. Please remember that you can only receive points for content on which you have done significant work in 2011; nominations of work from last year and "drive-by" nominations will not be awarded points. Signups are going to remain open through January, so if you know of anyone who would like to take part, please direct them to Wikipedia:WikiCup/2011 signups. Re:Flow GAN

Sounds good; I'll get started as soon as I can. WPVG could definitely use more FTs, as the recent loss of "Half-Life 2 titles" and a few others has left us with only five. And, besides Myst, they're pretty small and/or obscure. A thatgamecompany FT would be a huge gain for the project, and I'm happy to help you make it happen.

Oh, and thanks for the offer; I'll keep it in mind, as I might need help in the future on my "Looking Glass Studios games" GT/FT. You already gave me a hand with list formatting on the eventual main article, List of video games developed by Looking Glass Studios, but, due to my complete lack of experience in the field, I'll probably once again need your assistance when I go for FL in a few months.   • I'm making headway through the article. I'm going to give this one my standard two-pass copyedit; I'll work my way from beginning to end, and then do it again. I noticed two things while working:
    • "In Flow, the player controls a small creature in a watery environment, and causes that creature to eat other organisms, grow larger and dive deeper into the sea". -- This sentence shows a marked similarity to: "The player starts out controlling a multi-segmented worm- or snake-like microorganism on a bright, two-dimensional plane". I understand that the first one describes the overall scope of the game, while the second elaborates on one aspect of this, but it's a little disjointed to read twice about how the game is played—particularly when the descriptions are close together. I'm not sure how to solve the issue.
    • "If the player reaches the bottom again, the creature there is now their original worm organism, and defeating it starts the game over again as a worm". -- The lack of reference here may be brought up at FAC. I can understand why you couldn't find one, but it might be best to jury rig something, anyway.
  • As a sidenote, I see that you're currently leading in the WikiCup. I'll try to hurry through the article so that you can get those FA points as soon as possible. JimmyBlackwing (talk) 09:43, 16 January 2011 (UTC)

      • First pass complete. It was fairly smooth; I had a bit of trouble getting started on the lead, but the article's brevity and writing style made the rest quick work. The latter was a refreshing change of pace, in fact, as I've never before worked with someone who uses as many semicolons as I do. Glad to know I'm not alone. Anyway, I'll start on the second pass tomorrow, which will clean up the stuff I overlooked during the first, along with any errors I might have made. Since it's such a short article, I should be done within the week. As for FAC, I don't foresee any problems beyond that worm line I mentioned above, and possibly the small number of reviews. Your call, though; it's been quite awhile since I've paid attention to the goings-on at FAC. JimmyBlackwing (talk) 09:57, 21 January 2011 (UTC)
        • Nearing completion of the second pass, with just Reception to go. The article may need a few tweaks here and there—I may have missed something, or created a few problems of my own—but I think it'll be solid enough to pass 1a. I'm confident in my ability to meet that criterion; two articles I copyedited in the past were promoted, and both of our current VG FACs, which I heavily copyedited, have not received significant prose-related opposition. However, should 1a concerns arise during the nomination, I'll be ready to deal with them.
        • Also, I see that you've already started on Cloud (video game); impressive work so far. Are you planning on taking that to FAC, as well? By my count, there'll be seven articles in the FT; at least four will need to be Featured. With Flow and Flower accounted for, that leaves two—which, obviously, will not include Kellee Santiago or Journey (video game). Will I be hitting Jenova Chen next, or waiting for finalized versions of Cloud and thatgamecompany? JimmyBlackwing (talk) 10:51, 25 January 2011 (UTC)

VG/GL proposal

Since you do not like my current proposal, but also acknowledge that the current version is bad, can you give more detail as to what you think is WP:CREEPy in mine that you don't like and how you would suggest changing. Ad I mentioned at WT:VG, the proposal really needs an entire revamp and a piecemeal one of correcting only this or that section will be bad and we should be brining it up to a level to help with FLC/FAC articles (GANs ignore that and many other guidelines). We should be giving advice to help those people out because if it helps them, it will help those with lesser articles bring them up.陣内Jinnai 21:42, 18 January 2011 (UTC)

Wikipedia Ambassador Program is looking for new Online Ambassadors

Hi! I noticed your activity reviewing Featured Article Candidates, and wanted to let you know about the Wikipedia Ambassador Program, and specifically the role of Online Ambassador. We're looking for friendly Wikipedians who are good at reviewing articles and giving feedback to serve as mentors for students who are assigned to write for Wikipedia in their classes.

If you're interested, I encourage you to take a look at the Online Ambassador guidelines; the "mentorship process" describes roughly what will be expected of mentors in the coming term. If that's something you want to do, please apply!

You can find instructions for applying at WP:ONLINE. The main things we're looking for in Online Ambassadors are friendliness, regular activity (since mentorship is a commitment that spans several months), and the ability to give detailed, substantive feedback on articles (both short new articles, and longer, more mature ones).

WikiCup 2011 January newsletter

We are half way through round one of the WikiCup. Signups are now closed, and we have 129 listed competitors, 64 of whom will make it to round two. Congratulations to The Bushranger (submissions), who, at the time of writing, has a comfortable lead with 228 points, followed by Zanzibar Hurricanehink (submissions), with 144 points. Four others have over 100 points. Congratulations also go to Greece Yellow Evan (submissions), who scored the first points in the competition, claiming for Talk:Hurricane King/GA1, Principality of Sealand Miyagawa (submissions), who scored the first non-review points in the competition, claiming for Dognapping, and United Kingdom Jarry1250 (submissions) who was the first in the competition to use our new "multiplier" mechanic (explanation), claiming for Grigory Potemkin, a subject covered on numerous Wikipedias. Thanks must also go to Jarry1250 for dealing with all bot work- without you, the competition wouldn't be happening!

However, numerous competitors are yet to score at all- please remember to submit content soon after it is promoted, so that the judges are able to review entries. Now that Cloud's been passed...

So, now that Cloud's been passed (extremely quick and impressive work, by the way), what's next on the agenda? Are you going to work that up to FAC? I know it's short, but MissingNo.—possibly our shortest FA—passed in 2009, despite a few reviewers whining about the length. I don't know how difficult it is to get a short article to FA these days, but it was doable a few years ago. If you do decide to try for FAC, let me know when you want me to copyedit it.

On another note, I noticed that you heavily expanded thatgamecompany and Kellee Santiago. Nice work; I can't wait to see what else you do with the former, in particular.     • Working my way through the article. As an experiment, I'm doing a rougher first pass than usual, so that I can look at it more clearly on the second pass. List-help

Greetings! I was sent here for advice on list-formatting. I want to reformat the List of Metamorphoses characters into a table-list with explaining notes, appearances etc. For it I have made a workpage, and I would like your opinion on layout, sort-ability and whatever it needs. Hello again! I've formatted the whole list now and it looks great, but I'm not sure how to put the refs so they look good. I don't think it is completely finished content-wise (maybe 90-95 %), but 200 characters is more than enough for now. I prefer using the harvnb system when citing books - I did it on Myrrha with great success. I hope you will help me again, so I can bring the list to FA. Mottenen (talk) 18:51, 6 March 2011 (UTC)

Haha, thanks! Wish I had more time for this kind of thing. I'm looking at Unreal Tournament after Anachronox gets FA. Anachronox is such an amazing game, but I'd almost say 50% of my motivation for writing the article was ensuring a sample of that Democratus music could be featured. March 2011 GAN backlog elimination drive a week away

WikiProject Good Articles will be running a GAN backlog elimination drive for the entire month of March. The goal of this drive is to bring the number of outstanding Good Article nominations down to below 50. This will help editors in restoring confidence to the GAN process as well as actively improving, polishing, and rewarding good content. If you are interested in participating in the drive, please place your name here. Awards will be given out to those who review certain numbers of GANs as well as to those who review the most. WikiCup 2011 February newsletter

So begins round two of the WikiCup! We now have eight pools, each with eight random contestants. This round will continue until the end of April, when the top two of each pool, as well as the next 16 highest scorers of those remaining, will make it to round three. Congratulations to The Bushranger (submissions) (first, with 487 points) and Zanzibar Hurricanehink (submissions) (second, with 459), who stormed the first round. Scotland Casliber (submissions) finished third with 223. Twelve others finished with over 100 points- well done to all of you! The final standings in round one can be seen here. A mere 8 points were required to reach round two; competition will no doubt be much more fierce this round, so be ready for a challenge! A special thanks goes, again, to United Kingdom Jarry1250 (submissions) for dealing with all bot work. This year's bot, as well as running smoothly, is doing some very helpful things that last year's did not. Also, thanks to Bavaria Stone (submissions) for some helpful behind-the-scenes updating and number crunching.

Some news for those who are interested- March will see a GAN backlog elimination drive, which you are still free to join. Organised by WikiProject Good articles, the drive aims to minimise the GAN backlog and offers prizes to those who help out. Of course, you may well be able to claim WikiCup points for the articles you review as part of the drive. Also ongoing is the Great Backlog Drive, looking to work on clearing all of the backlogs on Wikipedia; again, incentives are offered, and the spirit of friendly competition is alive, while helping the encyclopedia is the ultimate aim. Though unrelated to the WikiCup, these may well be of interest to some of you.

Just a reminder of the rules; if you have done significant work on content this year and it is promoted in this round, you may claim for it. Also, anything that was promoted after the end of round one but before the beginning of round two may be claimed for in round two. Details of the rules can be found on this page. For those interested in statistics, a running total of claims can be seen here, and a very interesting table of that information (along with the highest scorers in each category) can be seen here. Project Status

Well it seems we're getting there. I've found this image [2] that could possibly be of use to making a barnstar, also could be of use to make a new better logo to replace the one we got. Well i haven't done much just looking for articles that don't fit stub and fixing some of parasite eve. Sorry; I know that I promised to help you finish the thatgamecompany FT. I'll finish up Cloud as soon as time allows, but I'm afraid I can't help with Kellee Santiago or the thatgamecompany article.   • Thanks; I'll keep that in mind. I just finished up Cloud, so you should be able to send it through the machine here soon. I think it might be best to try for A-Class or a peer review before hitting FAC; it's such a short article that any flaw could be a deal-breaker. MissingNo.—which I copyedited back in 2009—was a pretty tight ship, but its FAC was a mess regardless. Tiny issues led to unjustified "oppose" votes, and several commenters believed that its brevity alone made it ineligible for FA status. I don't know how much has changed since then, but I'm betting that you're in for a bumpy ride. Good luck. JimmyBlackwing (talk) 07:07, 10 March 2011 (UTC)

WikiCup 2011 March newsletter

Of the 64 current contestants, 32 will make it through to the next round; the two highest in each pool, and the 16 next highest scorers. At the time of writing, our current overall leader is Zanzibar Hurricanehink (submissions) with 231 points, who leads Pool H. Poland Piotrus (submissions) (Pool G) also has over 200 points, while 9 others (three of whom are in Pool D) have over 100 points. Remember that certain content (specifically, articles/portals included in at least 20 Wikipedias as of 31 December 2010 or articles which are considered "vital") is worth double points if promoted to good or featured status, or if it appears on the main page in the Did You Know column. There were some articles last round which were eligible for double points, but which were not claimed for. For more details, see Wikipedia:WikiCup/Scoring.

You had mentioned a while ago that you thought the "in pop culture" guideline at WP:VG/GL was inappropriate. Image strengthening

I've found that a lot of good articles and probably a lot of featured articles (I haven't check them yet) are abusing the use of copyrighted images on Wikipedia (for example, I've seen several articles that use three images to visualize content in the article even though the first image demonstrates everything that the other two images are trying to do). Silent Hill

The issue concerns about the word count in the plot section (which is original research) and has been discussed at Talk:Silent Hill (video game)#Request for comment with a resolution and I have requested a copyedit of the article at the Guild of Copy Editors WikiProject. Yomiel, a seemingly incivil user has committed possible personal attacks, disruptive editing, and possibly going against the project's consensus despite various attempts to stop with this behavior, as found in the relevant discussions at Yomiel's talk page and the Wikiquette alert report. That's it. I have had it. PresN, this is a flat-out lie, which was corrected before on the page Sjones is directing you to. I have never been uncivil to anyone, and he knows this. I've never been guilty of disruptive editing. I literally added a few words to the article in question. A certain editor went ballistic because I didn't include references for these minor edits. This person repeatedly undid my edits, even as they admitted to knowing the information I added was factual. They were basically trying to twist the roles to let them cause trouble. This person resquested comments on the talk page formally, but no one ever responded. They then made another section on the article talk page. A few people joined in, and they asked me for proof of what I was saying. I pointed out that this other editor knew my edits were accurate, but I obliged them and provided said resources. But this editor would not quit, because he wanted the article his way. He repeatedly made accusations against me, warning me and notifying me on my talk page, which irritated me. I repeatedly asked him to stop, but he would not. He reported me on some special page. Throughout this whole thing, he has done nothing but harass me and lie about how things have played out. Sjones' actions make no sense to me, since I don't really recall him ever even being part of any of this. Out of nowhere, he created the section on that page he asks you to check out. But on this page, he states that he things we are beating a dead horse with this argument. I pointed out that he was the one who was dragging the matter on by posting about it there. And he also accused me of being a disruptive editor there, too, where I corrected him. And now, after that, he does it again here. This makes me questions his true motives. It seems like he is less interested in the article itself and more interested in painting me in a bad light.Yomiel (talk) 13:31, 25 April 2011 (UTC)

WikiCup 2011 April newsletter

Round 2 of the 2011 WikiCup is over, and the new round will begin on 1 May. Note that any points scored in the interim (that is, for content promoted or reviews completed on 29-30 April) can be claimed in the next round, but please do not start updating your submissions' pages until the next round has begun. Fewer than a quarter of our original contestants remain; 32 enter round 3, and, in two months' time, only 16 will progress to our penultimate round. Scotland Casliber (submissions), who led Pool F, was our round champion, with 411 points, while 7 contestants scored between 200 and 300 points. At the other end of the scale, a score of 41 was high enough to reach round 3; more than five times the score required to reach round 2, and competition will no doubt become tighter now we're approaching the later rounds. Those progressing to round 3 were spread fairly evenly across the pools; 4 progressed from each of pools A, B, E and H, while 3 progressed from both pools C and F. Pools D and G were the most successful; each had 5 contestants advancing.

This round saw our first good topic points this year; congratulations to Zanzibar Hurricanehink (submissions) and Assyrian people Nergaal (submissions) who also led pool H and pool B respectively. However, there remain content types for which no points have yet been scored; featured sounds, featured portals and featured topics. In addition to prizes for leaderboard positions, the WikiCup awards other prizes; for instance, last year, a prize was awarded to Democratic Republic of the Congo Candlewicke (submissions) (who has been eliminated) for his work on In The News. For this reason, working on more unusual content could be even more rewarding than usual!

In the first paragraph of History, it says, "The strongly positive response to the game inspired Santiago and Chen to consider founding their own company to continue making games like Flow after they left school". WikiCup 2011 May newsletter

We're half way through round 3 of the 2011 WikiCup. There are currently 32 remaining in the competition, but only 16 will progress to our penultimate round. Why did you add back the second image? Again, I don't really feel that the "cover" is particularly useful in this case; a game of this sort is less defined by its logo than other games are by their cover, and it doesn't really show anything that a screenshot doesn't. No, your analysis isn't quite right. VDM (under the imprints Alphascript and Betascript) reprint Wikipedia articles. Related Wikipedia articles, but Wikipedia articles rather than actual content; they provide little or no editorial oversight. Thus the book "Warm Worlds and Otherwise: Alice Sheldon, James Tiptree, Jr, Robert Silverberg, The Girl Who Was Plugged In, Hugo Award" included a number of articles, compiled into one "book": Warm Worlds and Otherwise, Alice Sheldon, James Tiptree, Jr, Robert Silverberg, The Girl Who Was Plugged In and Hugo Award. I should probably write an explanation of this and link to it from the edit summary (I shall do before the next bot run), but I feel the bot was correct here. - Jarry1250 [Weasel? WikiCup 2011 June newsletter

We are half way through 2011, and entering the penultimate round of this year's WikiCup; the semi-finals are upon us! Points scored in the interim (29/30 June) may be counted towards next round, but please do not update your submissions' pages until the next round has begun. 16 contestants remain, and all have shown dedication to the project to reach this far. Our round leader was Scotland Casliber (submissions) who, among other things, successfully passed three articles through featured article candidates and claimed an impressive 29 articles at Did You Know, scoring 555 points. Casliber led pool D. Pool A was led by Ohio Wizardman (submissions), claiming points for a featured article, a featured list and seven good article reviews, while pool C was led by Norway Eisfbnore (submissions), who claimed for two good articles, ten articles at Did You Know and four good article reviews. They scored 154 and 118 respectively. Pool B was by far our most competitive pool; six of the eight competitors made it through to round 4, with all of them scoring over 100 points. The pool was led by Zanzibar Hurricanehink (submissions), who claimed for, among other things, three featured articles and five good articles. In addition to the four pool leaders, 12 others (the four second places, and the 8 next highest overall) make up our final 16. The lowest scorer who reached round 4 scored 76 points; a significant increase on the 41 needed to reach round 3. Eight of our semi-finalists scored at least twice as much as this.

No points were awarded this round for featured pictures, good topics or In the News, and no points have been awarded in the whole competition for featured topics, featured portals or featured sounds. Instead, the highest percentage of points has come from good articles. Featured articles, despite their high point cost, are low in number, and so, overall, share a comparable number of points with Did You Know, which are high in number but low in cost. A comparatively small but still considerable number of points come from featured lists and good article reviews, rounding out this round's overall scores.

We would again like to thank United Kingdom Jarry1250 (submissions) and Bavaria Stone (submissions) for invaluable background work, as well as all of those helping to provide reviews for the articles listed on Wikipedia:WikiCup/Reviews. Please do keep using it, and please do help by providing reviews for the articles listed there. Re:Super Meat Boy

Well, I try not to let my personal opinions get involved with Wikipedia, but, if you must know, I'll explain. Firstly, McMillen strikes me as pretentious. I liked what I played of Gish, and Aether wasn't terrible, but his "artsy" stuff (Coil comes to mind) left me rolling my eyes. Not that the idea of "artsy" games bothers me—I love the work of thatgamecompany, Nicklas Nygren, Keita Takahashi, Mark Essen, etc. It's McMillen's style that irritates me. For example, although he intended the original Meat Boy to be subversive—thanks to its "extreme difficulty" and irreverent gross-out humor—I found it uninspired, easy, smug and annoyingly childish. That's the foundation of my dislike for Super Meat Boy, which I haven't played (for obvious reasons). The endlessly adoring press coverage did not help.

Not that I have anything against the article becoming featured. Improving Wikipedia's indie game coverage is great, regardless of my personal opinion on the work. Even though I don't focus on them while editing, indie games are one of my favorite subjects; I've really enjoyed watching the recent drive to create and improve indie game-related articles. Even still, reading more about Super Meat Boy was an unpleasant thought, which is why I haven't reviewed the article. I figured that more people would have commented by now, making it unnecessary for me to do so. That's obviously not going to happen, though, so I'll just have to suck it up and review. WikiCup 2011 July newsletter

We are half way through the penultimate round of this year's WikiCup; there is less than a month to go before we have our final 8. Our pool leaders are New Zealand Adabow (submissions) (Pool A, 189 points) and Russia PresN (submissions) (Pool B, 165 points). The number of points required to reach the next round is not clear at this time; there are some users who still do not have any recorded points. Please remember to update your submissions' pages promptly. In addition, congratulations to PresN, who scored the first featured topic points in the competition for his work on Thatgamecompany related articles. Most points this round generally have, so far, come from good articles, with only one featured article (White-bellied Sea Eagle, from Scotland Casliber (submissions)) and two featured lists (Hugo Award for Best Graphic Story, from PresN and Grammy Award for Best Native American Music Album, from Another Believer (submissions)). Points for Did You Know and good article reviews round out the scoring. No points have been awarded for In the News, good topics or featured pictures this round, and no points for featured sounds or portals have been awarded in the entire competition. On an unrelated note, preparation will be beginning soon for next year's WikiCup- watch this space!

There is little else to be said beyond the usual. Please list anything you need reviewing on Wikipedia:WikiCup/Reviews, so others following the WikiCup can help, and please do help if you can by providing reviews for the articles listed there. FFXIII

Hi. Sorry it's from last week but I only just noticed this revert. Normally when a game is released, reviewed, and criticised, nobody is ever quite sure how much of the criticism was expected or anticipated by the development team and what steps they took, if any, to address it during development. FFXIII received some serious negative responses about one or two aspects of the game, and the developers have very kindly given some insight into how and why things ended up the way they did. In what way this is irrelevant or "odd" commentary is a mystery to me. These details about the specifics of how focus testing was conducted is directly relevant and puts basically the entire criticism of the game into context. Not including this, especially when it's coming from the horses' mouths so to speak, is doing a disservice to the reader. At the very, very least, you cannot simply state in the development section:

The game was intended to appeal to both Western and Japanese audiences, and focus groups from both regions were used.

and leave it there. It is disappointing to see a soon-to-be-FA disingenuously ignoring key information. – Steel 00:41, 2 August 2011 (UTC)

Chrono Trigger: Crimson Echoes

WikiCup 2011 July newsletter

The finals are upon us; we're down to the last few. One of the eight remaining contestants will be this year's WikiCup champion! 150 was the score needed to progress to the final; just under double the 76 required to reach round 4, and more than triple the 41 required to reach round 3. Our eight finalists are:

  • Scotland Casliber (submissions), Pool A's winner. Casliber has the highest total score in the competition, with 1528, the bulk of which is made up of 8 featured articles. He has the highest number of total featured articles (8, 1 of which was eligible for double points) and total did you knows (72) of any finalist. Casliber writes mostly on biology, including ornithology, botany and mycology.
  • Russia PresN (submissions), Pool B's winner and the highest scorer this round. PresN is the only finalist who has scored featured topic points, and he has gathered an impressive 330, but most of his points come from his 4 featured articles, one of which scored double. PresN writes mostly on video games and the Hugo Awards.
  • Zanzibar Hurricanehink (submissions), Pool A's runner-up. Hurricanehink's points are mostly from his 30 good articles, more than any other finalist, and he is also the only finalist to score good topic points. Hurricanehink, as his name suggests, writes mostly on meteorology.
  • Ohio Wizardman (submissions), Pool B's runner-up. Wizardman has completed 86 good article reviews, more than any other finalist, but most of his points come from his 2 featured articles. Wizardman writes mostly on American sport, especially baseball.
  • Principality of Sealand Miyagawa (submissions), the "fastest loser" (Pool A). Miyagawa has written 3 featured lists, one of which was awarded double points, more than any other finalist, but he was awarded points mostly for his 68 did you knows. Miyagawa writes on a variety of topics, including dogs, military history and sport.
  • Canada Resolute (submissions), the second "fastest loser" (Pool B). Most of Resolute's points come from his 9 good articles. He writes mostly on Canadian topics, including ice hockey.
  • Greece Yellow Evan (submissions), who was joint third "fastest loser" (Pool A). Most of Evan's points come from his 10 good articles, and he writes mostly on meteorology.
  • Australia Sp33dyphil (submissions), who was joint third "fastest loser" (Pool B). Most of Phil's points come from his 9 good articles, 4 of which (more than any other finalist) were eligible for double points. He writes mostly on aeronautics.

We say goodbye to our seven other semi-finalists, Another Believer (submissions), Poland Piotrus (submissions), United Kingdom Grandiose (submissions), Bavaria Stone (submissions), Norway Eisfbnore (submissions), Saskatchewan Canada Hky (submissions) and Wisconsin MuZemike (submissions). Everyone still in the competition at this stage has done fantastically well, and contributed greatly to Wikipedia. We're on the home straight now, and we will know our winner in two months.

In other news, preparations for next year's competition have begun with a brainstorming thread. Please, feel free to drop by and share any thoughts you have about how the competition should work next year. Sign ups are not yet open, but will be opened in due course. Watch this space. Further, there has been a discussion about the rule whereby those in the WikiCup must delcare their participation when nominating articles at featured article candidates. This has resulted in a bot being created by new featured article delegate Ucucha (talk · contribs). The bot will leave a message on FAC pages if the nominator is a participant in the WikiCup.

A reminder of the rules: any points scored after August 29 may be claimed for the final round, and please remember to update submission pages promptly. Hugo Award for Best Dramatic Presentation

Well done for your work on that article (and the rest)! I remember a few years ago when I tried to nominate the article for Short Form for FL and got rebuffed because it was too short. I actually had it on my significant contributions list for quite some time and never noticed it got merged, at which point it stopped being a significant contribution (by Triple Crown rules; I only contributed six inline cites; I don't like taking credit for others' work.). Hugos

I'm sorry I'm being such a pain at the Hugos FAC; I think it will get promoted if you can fix the sourcing, which I hope can be done. There are enough supports that I suspect (though I don't know) that the delegates will decide there is consensus to promote. If it does promote, I'd like to try a rewrite in a sandbox to see if I can come up with a version that addresses the issues I think I see. If I do that, I'll post a note at the article talk page and let you know -- obviously I'd like to get your take on it. WikiCup 2011 September newsletter

We are on this year's home straight, with less than a month to go until the winner of the 2011 WikiCup will be decided. The fight for first place is currently being contested by Principality of Sealand Miyagawa (submissions), Zanzibar Hurricanehink (submissions) and Australia Sp33dyphil (submissions), all of whom have over 200 points. This round has already seen multiple featured articles (1991 Atlantic hurricane season from Hurricanehink and Northrop YF-23 from Sp33dyphil) and a double-scoring featured list (Miyagawa's 1948 Summer Olympics medal table). The scores will likely increase far further before the end of the round on October 31 as everyone ups their pace. There is not much more to say- thoughts about next year's competition are welcome on the WikiCup talk page or the scoring talk page, and signups will open once a few things have been sorted out.

WikiCup 2011 October newsletter

The 2011 WikiCup is now over, and our new champion is Zanzibar Hurricanehink (submissions), who joins the exclusive club of the previous winners: Dreamafter (2007), jj137 (2008), Durova (2009) and Sturmvogel_66 (2010). The final standings were as follows:

In addition to the prizes based on placement, the following special prizes will be awarded based on high performance in particular areas of content creation. So that the finalists do not have an undue advantage, the prize is awarded to the competitor who scored the highest in any particular field in a single round.

No prize was awarded for featured pictures, sounds or portals, as none were claimed throughout the competition. The awards will be handed out over the next few days. Congratulations to all our participants, and especially our winners; we've all had fun, and Wikipedia has benefitted massively from our content work.

Preparation for next year's WikiCup is ongoing. Interested parties are invited to sign up and participate in our straw polls. It's been a pleasure to work with you all this year, and, whoever's taking part in and running the competition in 2012, we hope to see you all in January! Welcome to the 2012 WikiCup

Hello, and welcome to the 2012 WikiCup! The competition officially begins at the start of 2012 (UTC) after which time you may begin to claim points. Your submission page, where you must note any content for which you wish to claim points, can be found here, and formatting instructions can be found in hidden comments on the page. A bot will then update the main table, which can be seen on the WikiCup page. The full rules for what will and will not be awarded points can be found at Wikipedia:WikiCup/Scoring. There's also a section on that page listing the changes that have been made to the rules this year, so that experienced participants can get up-to-date in a few seconds. One point of which we must remind everyone; you may only claim points for content upon which you have done significant work, and which you have nominated, in 2012. For instance, articles written or good article reviews started in 2011 are not eligible for points.

This round will last until late February, and signups will remain open until the middle of February. If you know of anyone who may like to take part, please let them know about the comeptition; the more the merrier! At the end of this round, the top 64 scorers will progress to the next round, where their scores will reset, and they will be split into pools. Note that, by default, you have been added to our newsletter list; we will be in contact at the end of every month with news. You're welcome to remove yourself from this list if you do not wish to hear from us. Conversely, those interested in following the competition are more than welcome to add themselves to the list.
