HEADER (WP talk: India topics): Article on movie "Bhagavan Sri Ramakrishna"
There is a video of an old Bengali movie entitled "Bhagavan Sri Ramakrishna" that has recently been posted to YouTube HERE. It has English subtitles. The movie is long (2h 20min) and quite extraordinary. It seems quite old - perhaps 1930s or 1940s? - but I have not been able to find a date on the internet. I have heard rumors that this movie may have been based on a theatrical production, so that the actors may have been primarily theater actors. But I can cite no source. It seems to me that this is an extraordinary movie that should really be covered in Wikipedia. But there seem to be few online sources, at least in English. I suspect historically and in Bengali there must be many sources discussing this amazing movie (and perhaps a play on which it was based). If anyone has any information about this film that would allow us to establish notability and start an article about it, I think that would be a wonderful service. Thank you --- Presearch (talk) 08:08, 14 January 2013 (UTC)[reply]
For the same reason I could not start the article. Sources. --Tito Dutta (talk) 08:37, 14 January 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Doing... Yet, trying to find few sources to pass notability barrier at least! --Tito Dutta (talk) 08:40, 14 January 2013 (UTC)[reply]
1955 movie, but IMDB does not have a page on it. Film is noted in Encyclopedia of Indian Cinema (Nihalani, Rajadhyaksh et al.).--GDibyendu (talk) 09:34, 14 January 2013 (UTC)[reply]
And also at page 204 of the book by Sharmishtha Guptoo.--Dwaipayan (talk) 19:20, 14 January 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Great! Using that footnote's spelling of the lead actor, I found a screenshot and mention of this movie in a recent Telegraph profile of him: Soumitra Das and Dalia Mukherje (2012, Aug. 5). "The matter-of-fact actor of many parts" Kolkata, India: The Telegraph. In that article, the movie name is spelled "Bhagaban Sri Sri Ramakrishna" and the actor "Kanu Bandyopadhyay". It seems that there are numerous transliterated spelling variants, so one search doesn't reveal everything. But I suspect we still need more info to create a page for the movie. Or do we? -- Presearch (talk) 20:13, 14 January 2013 (UTC)[reply]
A very short stub won't need more than this.--Dwaipayan (talk) 02:51, 15 January 2013 (UTC)[reply]
HEADER (User talk:Ekabhishek): New article needed on recovered Bengali spiritual film
Hello Ekabhishek! Please see the notice I just left at the India Project Noticeboard HERE (DIFF) about the need for an article about a newly recovered Bengali spiritual film. Please help if you can, or pass on this encouragement to anyone you know who might be able to help! (BTW, I don't speak or read Bengali or any Indian language except for a smattering of beginning Sanskrit - so perhaps there is much online info in Bengali to which I am oblivious) Thanks! -- Presearch (talk) 08:19, 14 January 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Hello Presearch, I have posted a similar notice on the talkpages of some of the leading contributors to Ramakrishna article, and who probably might know Bengali or be better equipped to take on the article. Thanks for bringing the movie to my attention.--Ekabhishektalk 08:40, 14 January 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks so much for your efforts (and also improvements to lead actor page)! I see some small sources -- only a bare beginning perhaps -- are turning up at India noticeboard. There, and on the lead actor page, I added a link to a recent Telegraph profile of lead actor Banerjee, which mentions the movie - LINK. --Presearch (talk) 20:25, 14 January 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Hope things start looking up soon. The Telegraph article is a Good find! I'm sure it would give some valuable info about Banerjee. --Ekabhishektalk 03:58, 15 January 2013 (UTC)[reply]
HEADER (User talk:Ekabhishek): Re: Ramakrishna Film!
I have replied at India noticeboard. I made a list of 11 or 12 Bengali films on/about Ramakrishna. Of which I found 6 or 7 articles can not be created because of lack of source. This film was shot a New Theatres studio, but, not a notable one. I'll try to find offline sources once again, but most probably I won't be able to find any. --Tito Dutta (talk) 08:53, 14 January 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Put together with other info on the notice board, a stub can be created for now. --Ekabhishektalk 04:05, 15 January 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Titodutta, that list of 11 or 12 films about Ramakrishna sounds very interesting. It strikes me that there could be a WP article called something like "Films about Ramakrishna" that could describe all these films. Surely no one could argue with their collective notability (and whatever citations for each film are already available can be included right away). Then, if additional materials (e.g., such as those now offline) are available in order to bolster notability of individual films, there could also be articles made for individual films, with a summary kept on the overall page that discusses all films about Ramakrishna. That is, there need not be any contradiction between an article about an individual film, and an article about all RK films. And the article about all RK films, once viable, can be linked from the Ramakrishna page. What do you think? Would you want to go ahead and begin creating that page, either in mainspace or in userspace? (I can help build up the section on the 1955 film, since that's the one I know the most about...) Thanks -- Presearch (talk) 19:07, 17 January 2013 (UTC)[reply]
I regularly create stubs on film articles, most probably this is my most recent one Matir Pahar. You'll see this article lacks citation, if someone's PRODs or AFDs it, I'll have only one rationale "Since this is a 1959 film, there are not too many online source. This is a nation (Bangladesh)'s 3rd film, should be kept for historical importance". I know, does not sound persuasive, but, I have nothing to do.
Yes, that can be done. Films on Ramkrishna may be classified into two groups 1) Where Ramakrishna is primary subject 2) .. is an important subject. Group 1 will include films like "Ramakrishna Kathamrita", "Jata Mat Tata Path" (1979), "Parampurush Ramakrishna", "Bhagavan Sri Ramakrishna" etc, 2 will include G. V. Iyer's Swami Vivekananda (film) etc (this is most probably the only film where someone won National award in India playing the character Ramakrishna.). But, issues are a) citations b) I have list of Bengali films only, I am pretty much sure, films have been made in other Indian languages too (socially South Indian languages).
We need an Indian library. British Institute Library (Kolkata) has a huge collection of books which might be helpful for these or other Bengali/Indian articles. I have requested to include it in Wikipedia:The Wikipedia Library. National Library, Kolkata is making a large online library. Don't know, when it'll inaugurate.
I created an article Bibliography of Swami Vivekananda, there was another article Bibliography of Ramakrishna, this one needs some improvement, I think.
Ramakrishna has been a very very popular subject of other closely related performing mediums too like Bengali theatre and specially Jatra (Bengal). Ramakrishna in Jatra (Bengal) is surely a very important topic. But, we can not collect citations! --Tito Dutta (talk) 02:19, 18 January 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Resource: Film databases[edit]

There are several film databases that we can check in order to find cast, etc. Probably none has perfect coverage of Bengal/India, but some may be better than others. These databases include:

According to GDibyendu (HERE) the CITWF website seems to have better data on the 1950s period on Indian films (and perhaps other periods?), as compared to IMDB. --Presearch (talk) 18:56, 20 January 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Notes on candidate films[edit]

This section is for notes on particular films, e.g., ones with "Ramakrishna" in their name, that may or may not really be about Ramakrishna.

Tenali Ramakrishna (1941, 1956) (listed at CITWF) are not about SRK: Tenali Ramakrishna was a 16th century poet. Presearch (talk) 19:13, 20 January 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Hasyaratna Ramakrishna (1982) (listed at CITWF) is not about SRK - see WP film listing: Hasyaratna Ramakrishna. --Presearch (talk) 19:17, 20 January 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Rollcall Ramakrishna (1991) (listed at CITWF): This is posted on YouTube and does not appear to be about SRK - the description states "Rollcall Ramakrisha is a young and dynamic boy who cannot stand corruption or any sort of violence. He meets Lakshmi Devi a successful industrialist popular for her egoistic nature. Rollcall Ramakrisha is in love with Sapna Lakshmi's daughter..." --Presearch (talk)

Ramakrishna (2004) (listed at Gomolo): Directed by Agathiyan, this appears to be a non-SRK action movie, according to review HERE. --Presearch (talk) 19:26, 20 January 2013 (UTC)[reply]
