Reference removal

Hi ProjectLauren, I came across this edit of yours and was a bit confused. What is the purpose of removing the sole reference for numerous items? That seems to leave a lot of unsourced items for no clear gain. CMD (talk) 16:51, 7 November 2021 (UTC)

Hi Chipmunkdavis, I tidied up airline routes references only, no other content. These were outdated route launch announcements no longer providing meaningful information. Route launches and terminations should be sourced individually, for sure, but day-to-day operations are better referenced in other ways, like providing a link to the relevant airline's route map/schedule as on some other pages - see the one for Los Angeles International Airport [1]. The references are meaningful if they are the only sources, I'm not sure how they affect navigation exactly. There have been no replacements in the Hamad Airport Airlines and destinations section, leaving the table mostly unsourced. CMD (talk) 01:09, 8 November 2021 (UTC)

Except the referencing was completely random. Or are you suggesting we source every single route? I don't think that's practical, or even desirable. And it's not what the destination list is for. It's there to document network. As I said, in my opinion, the right way to do this would be by providing a link to the route map/schedule in a single reference by airline, with additional punctual references for route launches and terminations. I don't mind doing it myself. Between us, long lists of random references of questionable value running into the hundreds really don't make for a great user experience.ProjectLauren (talk) 17:11, 8 November 2021 (UTC)

Every route needs to be sourced. Whether this is individually or through a network map I have no strong opinion on, although you may be able to get more informed opinions at Wikipedia talk:WikiProject Airports. Your note on the long list of references is quite interesting, as I've never encountered that thought before. To me, the reference list itself is not a significant part of the user experience, as most are likely accessed through an individual clicking of the reference number in the article. I find the 3 column format with separate references a lot tidier and easier to navigate for users than multiple individual ones in the body of the table. Anyway, referencing every single route is rarely possible in practice, especially not for the larger airports.ProjectLauren (talk) 19:03, 11 November 2021 (UTC)

Third column for references

Please refrain from adding a third column to airport destination tables. Our content and style guidlines at WP:AIRPORTS and the portal concensus clearly state that NO third column is to be used in these charts - you cannot change a style template at will. This as been discussed several times in recent years and the use of a column for references has been declined. Please do not link to the data query pages, as they aren't specific enough to support good verifiability, and lack some of the data found in the profiles. Also, do not replace the Gazetteer citations unless a new source is found; at Edmonds, Washington, the source provided did not support the data and had to be reverted.
