  • Hi RKitko, thanks for the welcome. I have some basic formatting questions, where should I direct those. They seem so simple that I should be able to figure it out by looking at what other users do, but somehow haven't figured them out. I'll be editing as I find the need to for now. I'm currently living in Fiji as an intern, and will be finishing my BS in Botany from Prescott College, so my time is fairly limited. I'm very interested in edaphism (specifically on serpentine soils) which runs right into your field of carnivorous plants. I have the good fortune to live in Marin (home of Calochortus tiburonensis) and near to the serpentine bogs that host Darlingtonia california. I hope we can work together on the wonderful field of botany! PseudoscienceFTL 06:12, 27 June 2011 (UTC)
    • Fiji! I'm jealous. I hope you're enjoying your time there. I've been busy recently, so I haven't had much time to edit, but I look forward to working with you. Since I appear to be your first contact on Wikipedia, you're more than welcome to ask me about formatting. Wikipedia is so big now that it often takes a lot of time and effort to figure out all of the conventions and supported styles. However, you could just be bold and edit how you think things will improve the encyclopedia. If you run afoul of some convention, you'll likely get reverted or someone will notify you of the policy or guideline and kindly ask you to change it. You'll find most people to be accommodating and pleasant. You can also ask for direction at WP:HELPDESK and the kind folks there will help. Cheers, Rkitko (talk) 22:54, 27 June 2011 (UTC)[reply]
      • Great, thanks! The one simple formatting question I had was this: How can I put text on the left and a picture, infobox, taxobox, etc on the right? So far all my attempts have put them on a different line. What am I missing? PseudoscienceFTL 23:02, 27 June 2011 (UTC)
        • Ah, ok. Taxoboxes and infoboxes normally right-align just by virtue of being an infobox. So all you need to do is place the infobox text at the top of the article, e.g.:
{{Taxobox
 |image=
 |image_caption=
 ...
 }}
Genus species is a species of flowering plant in the...
        • For images, they should also right-align automatically when you use the parameter "thumb," e.g. [[File:Imaginary file name.jpg|thumb|A picture of an imaginary object]] In addition to "thumb" you can also use the following parameters: left or right to align it that way. I see you put a new photo in Morinda citrifolia. That article already has quite a few photos and it's usually left to Wikimedia Commons to display all of the photos available, available to the reader by a link using {{Commons}} or {{Commonscat}} at the bottom of the article. (Morinda citrifolia does not have a link yet. You can add one to the gallery at Commons:Morinda citrifolia with the following code: {{Commons|Morinda citrifolia|''Morinda citrifolia''}} (this is complicated, but the first pipe tells the template where to point the browser, the second formats it, since the template would otherwise leave the species name unitalicized if you just used {{Commons}}, which would be appropriate for articles not titled at the scientific name). Some relevant links for you on photo usage: MOS:IMAGES (the manual of style) and WP:IG (image gallery usage).
        • I think, overall, one of the least intuitive things is that images may stack up and force each other down, which displays differently on different computers based on their aspect ratios and screen size. So the image may not always display immediately next to the text you put it above. I hope that was clear. If I confused you, let me know. The links may clarify a few things. Also check out WP:Thumb, which is more a tutorial on image usage. Cheers, Rkitko (talk) 00:36, 28 June 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Science lovers wanted![edit]

Science lovers wanted!
Hi! I'm serving as the wikipedian-in-residence at the Smithsonian Institution Archives until June! One of my goals as resident, is to work with Wikipedians and staff to improve content on Wikipedia about people who have collections held in the Archives - most of these are scientists who held roles within the Smithsonian and/or federal government. I thought you might like to participate since you are interested in the sciences! Sign up to participate here and dive into articles needing expansion and creation on our to-do list. Feel free to make a request for images or materials at the request page, and of course, if you share your successes at the outcomes page you will receive the SIA barnstar! Thanks for your interest, and I look forward to your participation! Sarah (talk) 02:01, 19 April 2012 (UTC)[reply]
