Preboot Execution Environment

[edit]

Hello there! I've reverted your edit on the Preboot Execution Environment article, and just wanted go explain it a bit further. Please don't get me wrong, but the lead section was written really poorly... I'm not a native English speaker, so my "it doesn't sound good" judgment should weight even more, so to speak. :) At the same time, what should be a "software assembly"?

Please feel free to revert it back, if you insist – I'm not pushing my own wording by any means, all I'm trying is to make the article a bit better. — Dsimic (talk | contribs) 20:14, 8 October 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Hi my friend; please do not get mad on my "undo" thing; you know I respect you.
I do not like the "allows a client to be booted from a network" because it does not describe what really happens. Instead "boot from a network a software assembly on a client" tells you that "boots" a "software assembly" from a "network". the software assembly is made of just a few initial files. Some people mistakenly by extension think that a whole OS is "PXE installed or booted" and that's not the case. only the first part (that initial "software assembly") is PXE delivered, the rest is most of the time loaded by regular share transfers, NFS, HTTP, etc and that's not PXE.
Also when you say "Internally, network-based booting through PXE requires a.." well the concept of "internal" is unrelated to PXE.
I'd stand with the previous definition; please help me to make it more clear but around the previous current lines.
I've already made a re-wording of the first part of the definition; please take a look. Thanks.

Thanks, and I'm not feeling bad, we're here to improve both ourselves and articles – and good discussion is the key. Having all you've described above in mind, how about this for the article's lead section:
The Preboot eXecution Environment (PXE) specification describes a standardized client-server environment that boots a software assembly, retrieved from a network, on PXE-enables clients. On the client side it requires only a PXE-capable network interface controller (NIC), and uses a small set of industry-standard network protocols such as DHCP and TFTP.
That might be better, if you agree. — Dsimic (talk | contribs) 23:37, 8 October 2014 (UTC)[reply]
I definitely agree on that one my friend; go for it and update the page with it ;-)

I'm so glad that we're now on the same page; got the lead section updated according to the proposal above. If you agree, I'll go slowly over the whole article, in an effort to get it polished a bit; if I get to something that seems to me like requiring a disussion before doing the changes, I'll post it on the article's talk page first. Of course, if you find any of my edits not good enough, please feel free to revert or modify them and we'll discuss it in detail. Hope you find that good enough as some kind of a plan. :)
By the way, the article is so much better after your extensive series of edits. Good job! I was looking at the whole thing from the side, but didn't want to jump in and interrupt with changes and suggestions until you're done. — Dsimic (talk | contribs) 14:38, 9 October 2014 (UTC)[reply]
Sure, I like your plan; you might find things that I took for granted probably needing some clarification, or needing some polishing here and there or whatever. The key here is discussing and doing it (as you said) "slowly" then we can rectify if necessary.
I'm glad you think the article looks better now; I count on you for helping to keep the PXE page as a professional and unbiased WP article.

Thanks. Sure thing, there's no hurry, especially as the goal is to have an article that's as good as possible – and good things always take some time. :) I'll do my best regarding the improvements and related discussions whenever needed. — Dsimic (talk | contribs) 18:33, 9 October 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Hello! After a while (no less than three months, shame on me), I've copyedited one short paragraph in the article's Preboot Execution Environment § Details section... Looking forward to hearing your opinion on these changes! — Dsimic (talk | contribs) 10:47, 23 December 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Happy new Year my friend; sorry the delay, I saw your changes, I'm basically OK with them, I just re-arranged a couple of words. I think it looks better now. Pxe 213 37 84 214 (talk) 14:28, 5 January 2015‎ (UTC)[reply]
No worries, and best wishes for the 2015! I've cleaned up the paragraph a bit further, please check it out. — Dsimic (talk | contribs) 00:33, 6 January 2015 (UTC)[reply]
It looks perfect to me ;-) Pxe 213 37 84 214 (talk) 08:51, 9 January 2015 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks. :) When there's more time available I'll go over some other paragraphs that could use some cleanups. — Dsimic (talk | contribs) 19:58, 9 January 2015 (UTC)[reply]
