Ok, here's where the word came from. Engineering! A man named Copes invented a boiler feed water valve that was bimetallic . As the difference in temperature between the water In a bimetallic tube connected to the bottom of a boiler steam drum and the steam in the tube connected to the top of the steam drum varied with the water level in the steam drum, a connecting rod would lift open or colse the water supply valve to the boiler steam drum. This action maintained a balance, a proper, an equal level between water level and steam area in the boiler steam drum...Copeasetic.
