Notability of Aftab Iqbal

[edit]

A tag has been placed on Aftab Iqbal requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done because the article appears to be about a real person, organization (band, club, company, etc.), or web content, but it does not indicate how or why the subject is notable: that is, why an article about that subject should be included in an encyclopedia. Under the criteria for speedy deletion, articles that do not indicate the subject's importance or significance may be deleted at any time. Please see the guidelines for what is generally accepted as notable. If this is the first page that you have created, then you should read the guide to writing your first article.

If you think that you can assert the notability of the subject, you may contest the deletion by adding {{hangon}} to the top of the article (just below the existing speedy deletion or "db" tag), coupled with adding a note on the article's talk page explaining your position, but be aware that once tagged for speedy deletion, if the article meets the criterion it may be deleted without delay. Please do not remove the speedy deletion tag yourself, but don't hesitate to add information to the article that would confirm the subject's notability under Wikipedia guidelines.

For guidelines on specific types of articles, you may want to check out our criteria for biographies, for web sites, for bands, or for companies. Feel free to leave a note on my talk page if you have any questions about this. CultureDrone (talk) 08:42, 20 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Proposed deletion of Odoriferous

[edit]

A proposed deletion template has been added to the article Odoriferous, suggesting that it be deleted according to the proposed deletion process. All contributions are appreciated, but this article may not satisfy Wikipedia's criteria for inclusion, and the deletion notice should explain why (see also "What Wikipedia is not" and Wikipedia's deletion policy). You may prevent the proposed deletion by removing the {{dated prod}} notice, but please explain why you disagree with the proposed deletion in your edit summary or on its talk page.

Please consider improving the article to address the issues raised because even though removing the deletion notice will prevent deletion through the proposed deletion process, the article may still be deleted if it matches any of the speedy deletion criteria or it can be sent to Articles for Deletion, where it may be deleted if consensus to delete is reached. [edit]

Hi. Thank you for attempting to address the copyright concerns in this article. I wanted to let you know that while your revision did alleviate some of the concerns, it remained substantially too close to the source for us to be able to use the text. I have revised the text to comply with our copyright policy, but for future use wanted to explain the issues, since you may not be familiar with US laws that pertain to this.

Let me offer for example a single sentence from the source: "During his early'academic days and stay at the Medical College, he took keen interest in the welfare of the local population and was exposed to the public life even at a very tender age."[1] Your revision to this was as follows: "During his early stay at the Medical College, he took keen interest in the welfare of the local people and was involved in the public life even at a very young age."[2] You eliminated three words from the first phrase and changed only three other words/phrases in the subsequent: population→people, "exposed to"→"involved in", tender→young. Such a slight change creates what in US law is termed a derivative work, which only the original copyright holder is authorized to create. As another example, the source says, "He had to suffer a lot during the Martial Law rule in the country and went into exile for quite some time." You altered this to "He had to suffer a lot during the Martial Law rule in the Pakistan and went into exile for a short period." This is a change of only four words. It, too, is derivative. Many of the other phrases and sentences in the article were.

It can be difficult to revise material such that it is not a derivative work. It helps to write a completely different sentence with an entirely new structure.

That said, I should also point out that one section you did complete rewrite didn't need it. :) The Senate Standing Committees are titles, and titles are not copyrightable under US law. We reproduce those exactly.

As a complete aside, I'll also let you know that there has been a recent big change to the way we handle dates here in our manual of style. They are no longer wikilinked, but stand as plain text. This one is going to take some getting used to! I find myself doing it automatically. :) But that's the way we're supposed to be doing things now, unless the community changes its mind again.

Please let me know at my talk page if you'd like to discuss the matter any further. And thanks again for your contribution. Cheers. --Moonriddengirl (talk) 12:15, 11 September 2008 (UTC)[reply]
