Welcome back![edit]

It is indeed good to have you back.--Wehwalt (talk) 21:06, 2 October 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Thank you! It's good to be back. Should I change my user page to reflect my resysopping, or does a bot do that automatically?
I would make the change manually.--Wehwalt (talk) 21:09, 2 October 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Yeah, I think you're right. It looks like the edit was performed manually in the first place.-RHM22 (talk) 21:15, 2 October 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Never hurts to anticipate a bot anyway!--Wehwalt (talk) 21:30, 2 October 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Wikipedia has more bots than a Fritz Lang film. Most of them are helpful, though.-RHM22 (talk) 22:35, 2 October 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Agreed. Just dumped Barber coinage at FAC. As you can see, we still have no good source of images, one reason I am turning to early commems as most of those have PD images on the Mint's website.--Wehwalt (talk) 01:01, 3 October 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Oh, I'll take a look right now. Some things never change.-RHM22 (talk) 04:01, 4 October 2012 (UTC)[reply]

I added some Barber images (what I have anyway), so hopefully those are an improvement over what you had. Let me know if there is anything else I can help with. BrandonBigheart (talk) 05:07, 4 October 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Will do! Thanks again for your contributions.-RHM22 (talk) 04:03, 5 October 2012 (UTC)[reply]
I recently upgraded my Morgan Dollar to one graded MS67+. I replaced the older images for the Morgan Dollar (that were also mine) with the new ones. I hope that's okay.BrandonBigheart (talk) 18:03, 6 October 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Of course! Your photographs are always top notch.-RHM22 (talk) 15:47, 7 October 2012 (UTC)[reply]

GOCE September 2012 drive wrap-up[edit]

Guild of Copy Editors September 2012 backlog elimination drive wrap-up

Participation: Out of 41 people who signed up this drive, 28 copy-edited at least one article. Thanks to all who participated! Final results, including barnstars awarded, are available here.

Progress report: We achieved our primary goal of clearing July, August, September and October 2011 from the backlog. This means that, for the first time since the drives began, the backlog is less than a year. At least 677 tagged articles were copy edited, although 365 new ones were added during the month. The total backlog at the end of the month was 2341 articles, down from 8323 when we started out over two years ago. We completed all 54 requests outstanding before September 2012 as well as eight of those made in September.

Copy Edit of the Month: Voting is now over for the August 2012 competition, and prizes will be issued soon. The September 2012 contest is closed for submissions and open for voting. The October 2012 contest is now open for submissions. Everyone is welcome to submit entries and to vote.

– Your drive coordinators: Stfg, Allens, and Torchiest.

Disambiguation link notification for October 6[edit]

Hi. Thank you for your recent edits. Wikipedia appreciates your help. We noticed though that when you edited Barber coinage, you added a link pointing to the disambiguation page Pileus (check to confirm | fix with Dab solver). Such links are almost always unintended, since a disambiguation page is merely a list of "Did you mean..." article titles. Read the FAQ • Join us at the DPL WikiProject.

American Arts[edit]

Nothing wrong with it that I can see. I tweaked a bit and added a bit on the end to tie it into the American Eagles. You may want to consider adopting the {{sfn}} referencing format that I now use, that way you avoid calling 2 references the same thing and things like that. User:Br'er Rabbit would be delighted to school you in the finer points. Also, watch the capitalization of titles, I think I did it consistently, but you should double-check.--Wehwalt (talk) 19:10, 6 October 2012 (UTC)[reply]

That would be me ;) I do this a lot; to most of the FA Wehwalt's written, for example. There were a few that we worked on that had you in their history, so you'll be noticing stuff. Welcome back. Br'er Rabbit (talk) 22:07, 6 October 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for the help, guys! Is that the same as what used to be referred to as "Harvard citations"? Is that the preferred method now? There have been several changes in my absence. I noticed that there is also article feedback now!-RHM22 (talk) 15:46, 7 October 2012 (UTC)[reply]
The article feedback is great although I wish there was a better way of following up when it is an IP who left it ... I think Harvard citations is harvnb, I still use that sometimes as sfn won't work well in a footnote. I would say that it is a preferred method, but any method which makes it harder to make mistakes would be good.--Wehwalt (talk) 16:15, 7 October 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Yeah, I think it's an improvement over the old system, which was pretty much nothing. It's a nice way for IPs to leave feedback. Many of them probably don't know about the talk pages. I'll update the footnotes later today. I should probably start updating my other articles as well.-RHM22 (talk) 16:21, 7 October 2012 (UTC)[reply]
I think Br'er had already done a few in your absence.--Wehwalt (talk) 16:36, 7 October 2012 (UTC)[reply]
So he has! Thanks for that, Br'er. You've been busy in the old briar patch.-RHM22 (talk) 16:41, 7 October 2012 (UTC)[reply]
You're welcome. I do this quite a lot. That's an interim step; see pages like Murray Chotiner for how a mix of book and web sources get upgraded. Br'er Rabbit (talk) 19:53, 7 October 2012 (UTC)[reply]
{{sfn}} is part of the {{harv}} suite; it's basically {{harvnb}} automatically wrapped with <ref>...</ref> and given a unique generated |name=. This is now widely use although there a few underfoot with their minds still stuck in 2006. Key points; it removes the error-prone naming of refs by doing the naming with a consistent scheme. This naming results in automatic collation of duplicate pages number references without editors haveing to do anything other than assign |p= or |pp=. It just happens for you. More advanced control is obtained by using the utility template {{sfnRef}} to take over the footnote text (from Author Year). Mostly this is for omitting the year when it's getting repetitive. It's also used when you want the footnote text to be something like New York Times October 7, 2012. Not everything has an author credit; websites, especially.
You should script-up; User:RHM22/common.js is not serving you well at all. See User:Br'er Rabbit/common.js and start copying. I'd suggest you start with:
importScript('User:Cameltrader/Advisor.js');

importScript('User:GregU/dashes.js');

var SegregateRefsJsAllowConversion = true;
importScript('User:PleaseStand/segregate-refs.js');

importScript('User:Ucucha/HarvErrors.js');
They have documentation at the same pages wo/".js". User:Ucucha/HarvErrors is especially important for the sfn/harv tools. It adds error messages when things are not linking properly (it also can generate some false positives, but that's for later;). Br'er Rabbit (talk) 18:37, 7 October 2012 (UTC)[reply]
His stuff works and makes my life easier by either preventing me from or pointing out my referencing mistakes. So I do it. Well worth having him look over your work as you do it.--Wehwalt (talk) 18:56, 7 October 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Pardon my ignorance, but could you please explain what the code does? My understanding of Wiki markup is very basic.-RHM22 (talk) 17:09, 8 October 2012 (UTC)[reply]

For the scripts, see:

{{sfn}} and {{sfnRef}} have documentation, too. Basically sfn is a way of simplifying and shortening footnotes. Sources go in some sort of references section and inline citations are simply added where needed. No need to name duplicates or be concerned with collation at all. And with the HarvErrors script you get feedback on whether things are linking up properly. Missing sources and typos are then easily fixed. You get consistent format to things, too. If you grab a paragraph from a related article, the footnotes will work out if all is being done with a topic-wide plan. If the paragraph is using a source not in the pasted-to article, you'll be alerted to the fact and should then just go get it from the copied-from article. Wehwalt's done a lot of this with more recent coin/coinage article. It all about building up patterns in wide swaths of articles.

sfn is still 'doing' ref tags, they're just under the hood, as are the names. Hope that helps. Br'er Rabbit (talk) 17:36, 8 October 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Yeah, that's basically what I do. All of the coin articles I have have sfn now, so it's easy to set up the references section and you don't have to remember reference names or risk duplicating them.--Wehwalt (talk) 17:52, 8 October 2012 (UTC)[reply]
We do seem to have wandered further into using Author sans-year in a lot of this topic area. We had spoken of using years even where unnecessary for disambiguation to avoid conflicts when pasting up higher level articles ... should we pick a direction to push this? Br'er Rabbit (talk) 18:15, 8 October 2012 (UTC)[reply]
I prefer not to use years. Some of these books get reprinted and I'm working from the reprinted ones, like Taxay. A new edition of Yeoman comes out every year. If I update, I've got to change every reference (note: I obviously still have to check every reference). However, if good enough reasons are given me, I'll grumble and go with the flow.--Wehwalt (talk) 18:31, 8 October 2012 (UTC)[reply]
I'm not going to argue for years; repetition is poor practise and contributes to wikitext-clutter and too-long shortened-footnotes. When compositing higher level pages from extant pages there will be instances where years and/or title fragments will need to be added, as will occasionally be the case when bringing a new source into an article. This is the norm in other topic areas such as all the German ships and the solar system full of rocks. I'll probably revisit some coin articles to trim some years out of the sfns. Br'er Rabbit (talk) 23:17, 8 October 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you both for the interesting dialogue. I'm not still not certain that I fully understand the template, but I'll read up on it and try and get it all figured out. It took me a while to learn basic markup!-RHM22 (talk) 03:08, 28 December 2012 (UTC)[reply]

GOCE November 2012 copy edit drive update[edit]

Guild of Copy Editors November 2012 backlog elimination drive mid-drive newsletter

  • Participation: Out of 31 people signed up for this drive so far, 22 have copy-edited at least one article. If you've signed up but haven't yet copy-edited any articles, every bit helps; if you haven't signed up yet, it's not too late. Join us!
  • Progress report: We're on track to meet our targets for the drive. We have reduced our target group of articles—November and December 2011—by over 50%, and 34 of the the 56 requests made in September and October this year have already been fulfilled. However, the rate of tagging for copy edit has increased, and this month we are just keeping the size of the backlog stable. So, all you copy editors, please do come along and help us!
  • The September 2012 Copy Edit of the Month Contest was won by Baffle gab1978 for his copy edit of Expulsion of the Acadians. Runner up was Gareth Griffith-Jones for his edit of I Could Fall in Love. Congratulations to both.
  • The October 2012 Copy Edit of the Month Contest is in the discussion and voting stage until midnight November 30 (UTC). You don't have to make a submission to vote!
  • November 2012 Copy Edit of the Month Contest is in the submissions stage until midnight November 30 (UTC), when discussion and voting begin.
  • Seasonal oversight: We had a slight fall from grace in the title of our last newletter, which mentioned the season in the northern hemisphere and thus got it wrong for the southern. Fortunately an observant GOCE member was ready to spring into action to advise us. Thanks! In future we'll stay meteorologically neutral.

Re: Hello![edit]

Thanks! You've also done fantastic work over the years here (have any time for a go at the 2013 Wikicup?). And yeah, it will be depressing once the series is gone. Fringe helped me deal with Lost's end, but I don't really have a replacement for it (Game of Thrones, The Walking Dead maybe? -- certainly nothing on network television anymore!). :( I'm planning on bringing all the S1 episodes to GA for the Wikicup, though I do not have any immediate plans for S4 and S5.
Thanks again for the note; it's always nice to feel appreciated! :) Ruby 2010/2013 05:55, 28 December 2012 (UTC)[reply]

File mover status?[edit]

Hi RHM, sorry for the delayed reply. I noticed that you asked me on my talk page whether I would like File Mover status. I have been uploading more and more coin photos, and have found that it may be useful indeed. Particularly, I found myself in a bind lately (and I did something silly) because of a naming issue with some of my uploaded images. Let me know if this is still possible. Thanks --BrandonBigheart (talk) 14:49, 12 June 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Orphaned non-free media (File:Zootcatoriginal.jpg)[edit]

Thanks for uploading File:Zootcatoriginal.jpg. The media description page currently specifies that it is non-free and may only be used on Wikipedia under a claim of fair use. However, it is currently orphaned, meaning that it is not used in any articles on Wikipedia. If the media was previously in an article, please go to the article and see why it was removed. You may add it back if you think that will be useful. However, please note that media for which a replacement could be created are not acceptable for use on Wikipedia (see our policy for non-free media).

If you have uploaded other unlicensed media, please check whether they're used in any articles or not. You can find a list of 'file' pages you have edited by clicking on the "my contributions" link (it is located at the very top of any Wikipedia page when you are logged in), and then selecting "File" from the dropdown box. Note that all non-free media not used in any articles will be deleted after seven days, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. Thank you. Hazard-Bot (talk) 04:34, 23 June 2013 (UTC)[reply]

To my fellow friend of the Franklin Institute[edit]

Hello :) It's your old swiss-chard-soup loving fellow Studio Ghibli fan from back when you were a slimy fish. I am acutely aware of how creepy this is (answer: VERY) but I found this page by looking for your articles - I wanted to brush up on my numismatics and also I didn't know how else to get in touch with you to say that I think you're really, really great and I hope you're okay and happy right now. You can email me anytime: [name of christian messiah]hasavespa@[big news website that is also an exclamation of excitment/joy].com or message me at the other place. 99.231.75.200 (talk) 21:56, 13 July 2013 (UTC) Jaq-o-phelia <3[reply]

I don't know where RHM22 is right now, he returned briefly but hasn't edited in several months. However, if it is any help, I am doing my best to carry the numismatics torch around here in his absence. Note that if you register an account, you can use the "email this user" function, though it may take several days and edits for you to gain the status which allows you to use it (that's to protect against spam).--Wehwalt (talk) 23:10, 13 July 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you for letting me know and even more for carrying the torch! I wouldn't have known about the Morgan Dollar without you guys :) I did register an account, but I don't see the email link yet. I verified my account via email, so I'll wait a few days and check back. Really appreciate your help. Jesushasavespa (talk) 22:21, 14 July 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Make a few edits to different articles, I'm sure you can find something constructive to edit. That will do it. Yes, that is one of RHM22, he was our dollar guy. I've been doing a lot of the smaller (and larger) denominations, plus finishing some of his work.--Wehwalt (talk) 22:57, 14 July 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks, Wehwalt, for fielding this on my behalf. I must apologize for the absurd delay; once again, I was kept very busy and Wikipedia slipped my mind. I will certainly try to be more active from here on in.-RHM22 (talk) 00:13, 6 November 2013 (UTC)[reply]

GOCE July 2013 news report[edit]

Guild of Copy Editors July 2013 backlog elimination drive mid-drive newsletter
  • Participation: Out of 30 people who have signed up for this drive so far, 18 have participated. If you have signed up for the drive but have not yet participated, it isn't too late. If you haven't signed up for the drive, sign up now!
  • Progress report: Thus far we have reduced the number of May/June 2012 articles to just 124 articles, so we're on the right track. Unfortunately, for the first time in GOCE history, the number of articles in the backlog has actually gone up during this drive. While all participants are currently doing a fine job, we just don't have as many of them as we have had in the past. We have over 500 editors on our mailing list, but only 18 editors who have done a copy edit for the drive. If you're receiving this newsletter, it's because you have an interest in copy editing. Join the drive! Even if you only copy edit one article, it helps. Imagine how much progress we could make if everyone chipped in just one article.

GOCE December 2013 Blitz wrap-up and January Drive invitation[edit]

December Notes from the Guild of Copy Editors

The December blitz ran from December 8–14. The theme for this blitz was articles tied in some way to religion. Seven editors knocked out 20 articles over the course of the week. Our next blitz will be in February, with a theme to be determined. Feel free to make theme suggestions at the Guild talk page!

The January 2014 Backlog elimination drive is a month-long effort to reduce the size of the copy edit backlog. The drive begins on January 1 at 00:00 (UTC) and ends on January 31 at 23:59 (UTC). Our goals are to copy edit all articles tagged in October and November 2012 and complete all requests placed before the end of 2013. Barnstars will be awarded to anyone who copy edits at least one article, and special awards will be given to the top five in the following categories: "Number of articles", "Number of words", "Number of articles of over 5,000 words", "Number of articles tagged in October and November 2012", and "Longest article". We hope to see you there!

Coordinator election: Voting is open for candidates to serve as GOCE coordinators from 1 January through 30 June 2014. Voting will run until the end of December. For complete information, please have a look at the election page.

Disambiguation link notification for February 11[edit]

Hi. Thank you for your recent edits. Wikipedia appreciates your help. We noticed though that when you edited Sacagawea dollar, you added a link pointing to the disambiguation page William Clark (check to confirm | fix with Dab solver). Such links are almost always unintended, since a disambiguation page is merely a list of "Did you mean..." article titles. Read the FAQ • Join us at the DPL WikiProject.

Main Page appearance: Kennedy half dollar[edit]

This is a note to let the main editors of Kennedy half dollar know that the article will be appearing as today's featured article on March 24, 2014. If this article needs any attention or maintenance, it would be preferable if that could be done before its appearance on the Main Page. If you prefer that the article appear as TFA on a different date, or not at all, please ask Bencherlite (talk · contribs). You can view the TFA blurb at Wikipedia:Today's featured article/March 24, 2014. If it needs tweaking, or if it needs rewording to match improvements to the article between now and its main page appearance, please edit it, following the instructions at Wikipedia:Today's featured article/requests/instructions. The blurb as it stands now is below:

The obverse of the Kennedy half dollar

The Kennedy half dollar is a fifty cent coin issued by the U.S. Mint. Intended as a memorial to the assassinated President John F. Kennedy, it was authorized by Congress just over a month after his death. Use of existing works by Mint sculptors Gilroy Roberts and Frank Gasparro allowed dies to be prepared quickly, and striking of the new coins began in January 1964. The coins vanished from circulation upon their release in March 1964 due to collectors, hoarders, and those interested in a memento of the late president. Although the Mint greatly increased production, they still failed to circulate. Starting with 1965-dated pieces, the percentage of fine silver was reduced from 90% to 40% (silver clad), but even this change failed to restore the coin to circulation. In 1971, silver was eliminated entirely. A special design for the reverse of the half dollar was issued for the United States Bicentennial and was struck in 1975 and 1976. Even though ample supplies of half dollars are now available, their circulation is extremely limited. Since 2002, Kennedy half dollars have only been struck to satisfy the demand from collectors, and are available at a premium through the Mint. (Full article...)
