Hello RWinston. The nature of your edits gives the impression you have an undisclosed financial stake in promoting a topic, such as the edit you made to User:RWinston/sandbox/Ronald H. Winston, and that you have not complied with Wikipedia's mandatory paid editing disclosure requirements. Paid advocacy is a category of conflict of interest (COI) editing that involves being compensated by a person, group, company or organization to use Wikipedia to promote their interests. Undisclosed paid advocacy is prohibited by our policies on neutral point of view and what Wikipedia is not, and is an especially egregious type of COI; the Wikimedia Foundation regards it as a "black hat" practice akin to Black hat SEO.
Paid advocates are very strongly discouraged from direct article editing, and should instead propose changes on the talk page of the article in question if an article exists, and if it does not, from attempting to write an article at all. At best, any proposed article creation should be submitted through the articles for creation process, rather than directly.
Regardless, if you are receiving or expect to receive compensation for your edits, broadly construed, you are required by the Wikimedia Terms of Use to disclose your employer, client and affiliation. You can post such a mandatory disclosure to your user page at User:RWinston. The template {{Paid}} can be used for this purpose – e.g. in the form: {{paid|user=RWinston|employer=InsertName|client=InsertName}}. If I am mistaken – you are not being directly or indirectly compensated for your edits – please state that in response to this message. Otherwise, please provide the required disclosure. In either case, please do not edit further until you answer this message. --Worldbruce (talk) 23:29, 29 October 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Response to Paid editing[edit]

Dear Worldbruce, thank you for your reply and for helping me better-understand the "Wiki-waters," as navigating through this stuff has been a bit challenging.

Re: your assumption that I'm being paid to edit Mr. Winston's page (which I can appreciate based on my previously expressed relationship with him), please accept the following clarity:
I am NOT, in fact, being paid directly or indirectly from Mr. Winston and/or any of his associations to edit and/or maintain the Wiki page Ronald hopes to reinstate into the Wiki encyclopedia.

The nature of my relationship with Mr. Winston is that of research and development. More specifically, he reached out to me as someone who can produce a prototype of a VR (Virtual Reality) idea he and I wish to explore. Any compensation I receive from Mr. Winston is related ONLY to said exploration. That said, and due only to Ron's computer skills (or lack thereof), I volunteered to help him re-post his Wiki page that was subsequently removed for the reason I've come to understand - i.e. that the previous party (who was paid to reinstate/Edit his page) did not disclose they were being paid (pursuant to the guidelines you've highlighted). In other words and simply put, I am attempting to get Ron's page reinstated simply as a helpful gesture in the spirit of my fondness for and collaboration with Mr. Winston... again, only in the area of our mutual interest in a VR idea we're endeavoring to Prototype.

I hope I've cleared up any misunderstandings and may proceed to add the Additional References that will hopefully allow Mr. Winston's Wiki page to be accepted into the community.

November 2017[edit]

Information icon Hello, and welcome to Wikipedia. We welcome and appreciate your contributions, but it appears you have written or added to an article about yourself. Creating an autobiography is strongly discouraged – see our guideline on writing autobiographies. If you create such an article, it may be deleted. If what you have done in life is genuinely notable and can be verified according to our policy for articles about living people, someone else will probably create an article about you sooner or later (see Wikipedians with articles). If you wish to add to an existing article about yourself, please propose the changes on its talk page. Please understand that this is an encyclopedia and not a personal web space or social networking site. If your article has already been deleted, please see: Why was my page deleted?, and if you feel the deletion was an error, please discuss it with the deleting administrator. Thank you. Warning[edit]

Unless I have completely misunderstood, or unless you have written something that is not correct, you are a paid editor. You stated at the Articles for Creation Help Desk that you are trying to create a draft on behalf of your employer. Even if your duties as an employee do not include editing Wikipedia, you are considered a paid editor, and the statement that you are only trying to correct an injustice doesn't change the nature of your editing. You may go to Changing username to request a change in your username, but you still do have a conflict of interest. You can't simply say that you are acting out of nobility when an employer-employee relationship exists (and it appears that you are changing your narrative as you go). I can see that it is likely that an article was deleted that might have had encyclopedic content and notability, if it also contained promotional material and puffery and it was not feasible to separate the chaff from the wheat. However, in that case, you are not the person who should take care of remedying that, and you are just going to make things worse if you try to push. If Winston or one of their companies is your employer, you are a paid editor. Robert McClenon (talk) 02:42, 2 November 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Well, which is it?[edit]

Are you he? Are you just a nice person singing his praises? Please be advised that WP:paid is broadly construed. Have you any other purpose on Wikipedia than writing about the subject in question? My advice at this juncture is that you cease from writing about this subject. You may suggest and discuss, but it appears you are incapable of writing in a neutral manner. -- Dlohcierekim (talk) 12:55, 2 November 2017 (UTC) What Robert McClenon said. -- Dlohcierekim (talk) 12:57, 2 November 2017 (UTC)[reply]

User:RWinston - It is clear to me that, just as you said at the AFC Help Desk, you are writing on behalf of your employer. Just deciding that you are writing out of the goodness of your heart because you think that there has been an injustice may be good for your soul, but we don't judge your soul, only your conflict of interest. Also, Murphy's Law plus applies. If anything can possibly go wrong, it will, and if we have arranged things so that nothing can go wrong, a mistake that can't be made will be made anyway, which is that you used the name of a living person as your account name.
