Feedback from Dr. V[edit]

Hi, Rberggren. Congrats on getting started. I would love for you to do the article edit on Walkabout youth. Can you check with the reference librarian? Also, Dr. Woodman would be great to talk to. I fixed the headings in your talk page - hopefully you can start putting subject headings on talk pages so they can be useful as we move forwards.

Please complete an edit using facts from the reading. Prof.Vandegrift (talk) 03:27, 14 September 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Topic feedback[edit]

Hi Rberggren! I was also interested initially with the topic walkabout; however, when I was doing research on the topic I couldn't find many sources. Have you found any articles that were useful? What aspects of the process are you interested in? Do you plan on incorporating gender? I cant wait to see what you find because it is such an interesting topic! Best of luck! Topic Discussion[edit]

Hey Rachel! I really like your topic idea. It's pretty narrow so I think that it would be an interesting and unique article. Can't wait to read it!Mbaltas1 (talk) 17:47, 18 September 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Feedback[edit]

Hi, Rachel! The topic you've chosen is something I've never really heard much of so I think it will be really interesting to see what you find. Will you explore other countries or cultures who have a similar walkabout process? Or will you primarily stick to Australia? What aspects are you going to focus on? Can't wait to see what you find! Proposal feedback[edit]

Hi, Rberggren -- This sounds like a doable, interesting project. I am not sure why you aren't editing and expanding the Walkabout page itself. It looks like a page that would benefit from the work you plan to do, which you could, of course, link to the Aboriginal Culture page.

I would like your proposal to have more substance about plans for what, exactly, you would include. What is the source for the information you write about? This would be great to research and include. Your research questions (do girls do this? How does it fit into contemporary Australian life?) One challenge is to see Aboriginal or any native people as fully modern. While often the language encourages the division between "traditional" and "modern," in essence, all cultures are changing, with Aboriginal youth negotiating modern life drawing from a variety of cultural practices and norms, including Aboriginal ethnic traditions.

Keep working to develop the required NPOV, which is required for article editing.

I do not yet have a sense of sources you have found on the topic. I look forward to reading the bibliography. As you post sources, please write a bit about what each source says and how it contributes to your potential revisions. What do you have, and what are you still looking for? Ideally, you could also inform a reader how the sources you end up with will shape the revision plans you mention in your proposal.

Please come to my office hours if you would like some help. Also, the reference librarians and Kayla can work with you. Cheers, Prof.Vandegrift (talk) 02:48, 5 October 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Sources feedback[edit]

Hi, RB - Your sources have a start at correct formatting and cohesiveness. Please note that for this assignment, personal blogs and web pages from individuals do not constitute quality materials. I encourage you to meet with the reference librarian and/or with me to find materials. As you outline your planned changes to the current article, please write a bit about what each source says and how it contributes to your potential revisions. What do you have, and what are you still looking for? The next step is to outline your planned writing and write it up, using academic sources or sources directly from aboriginal Australians (when appropriate). hi[edit]

I did anthropology in the era of Ronald Berndt at University of Western Australia a very long time ago, not that I am necessarily of any help. would strongly suggest

  • Peterson, Nicolas (2004), "Myth of the "walkabout": movement in the Aboriginal domain", Population Mobility and Indigenous Peoples in Australasia and North America, Routledge: 223–238, ISBN 978-0-415-22430-7
  • a very careful check of http://trove.nla.gov.au/newspaper/result?q=aboriginal+walkabout
  • As I am an australian who did fieldwork post grad in Java in Indonesia, I am alway acutely aware of 'outside' views of culture, and am somewhat skeptical of both internal and external reporting of something like 'walkabout' - enough said for the moment.
