New Article - 04/2008[edit]

I wrote this article entirely from scratch, and replaced the existing ones. The old MPEG-1 articles (MPEG-1, MP2, MP3) on Wikipedia were complete crap. Inaccurate, disorganized, slanted, incomplete, misconstrued, contradictory, overlapping, etc. It was far easier to start from scratch than try to fix all the individual existing ones, and has given far better end results.

Although it is long please do not consider splitting this article: The whole is greater than the sum of its parts. Independent articles always end up more generalized, do not make the relationship to the whole nearly as clear, and lower readability simply by virtue of forcing readers to switch to sub-articles, and come back, over and over again. We've seen how very badly overlapping articles turn out with MPEG-1 Layer II and MP3, and you can still see it by looking through articles about each individual subject in MPEG-1 compression. MPEG-1 is low traffic enough that more eyes in one place should significantly improve article quality.

Please edit facts carefully. Even though not every sentence is cited, this is all duly researched info, and if you feel the need to significantly change facts, chances are, more likely than not, you are simply mistaken. Be sure to at least include citations with any changes. Ultimately though, it will deteriorate to whatever level of quality all of you are willing to accept. I can't watch it forever so its up to you.

I have done my best to explain this subject simply, while not hand-waving away the actual, functional details of the MPEG-1 encoding process, and thereby making it useless for more knowledgeable individuals. If there is anything you do not understand, please be very SPECIFIC about exactly what, and I'll try to address it as well as possible.
