Inline citations

Much of how to do so is covered above. help:referencing for beginners is a good start. Often you can just copy/paste a citation to where you want one and edit it to your needs. Take a look at some existing inline citations. Lord of the Rings (musical) has quite a few. (Fellowship! is completely lacking in inline citations.) You should see something like: <ref>{{cite news |url= https://www.theguardian.com/stage/gallery/2014/feb/25/the-fastest-west-end-flops-in-pictures |title= The fastest West End – in pictures |newspaper= [[The Guardian]] |access-date= 29 April 2017 }}</ref> The "<ref>" starts a footnote and "</ref>" ends it. (The hidden "nowiki" stuff keeps that citation from being compiled. When complied, it looks like this.[1] The footnote is inserted under the {{reflist}} (or for talk pages {{reflist talk}}) and looks like this:

Stuff enclosed in double curly braces {{ and }} are wp:templates which are expanded given certain "fields". A few fields for {{cite news}} are "|url=", "|title=", "|date=". Common templates used for citations are {{cite news}}, {{cite web}}, {{cite journal}} (for magazines and professional journals), and others as well. See Help:Citation Style 1 for a list. If you search for "template:cite web" you will get the documentation. The documentation gives you, or should give you, a minimum and a recommended minimum list of parameters. A field sets a parameter. If there is no field defined, it will be ignored or an error visible in the reflist may be seen. Use "wp:Show preview" to check your work and see any flagged (not all are flagged) template errors.

It's not that difficult, but the more you know, the more tricks you can pull off! Please check your work with Show preview!
