Ngatikese

[edit]

Hi. I wonder about this[1] edit. Didn't modern Ngatikese develop after the island was repopulated from Pohnpei? If so, Ngatikese Creole could not have developed from it, but instead from the earlier variety of Pohnpeian spoken on the island. — kwami (talk) 23:49, 6 March 2015 (UTC)[reply]

It is uncertain about the exact mixing. What is certain was that there was a population of women left on the island that most likely spoke a Pohnpeic language, probably some form similar to modern Ngatikese. This population was probably the largest linguistic community there. The men that repopulated the atoll spoke English (and Maritime Pidgin), Pohnpeian, Kiribati, Mortlockese (this community was later killed off according to Poyer). Later missionaries from Hawai`i may haven even spoken Hawaiian. There is not enough documentation of the Creole to state which languages had the most impact historically, though based purely on numbers, Ngatikese may have had the most influence, however there are prestige issues to take into account. Based on the modern form of the Creole, there is heavy influence from Ngatikese and the presence of the voiceless velar fricative that is found in Ngatikese and not Pohnpeian. I wish I had a clearer answer, but hopefully my future research can help. -Rentzb0711 (talk) 01:33, 7 March 2015 (UTC)[reply]
