Speedy deletion of A Thousand Cranes[edit]

The band is a groundbreaking sacred music band in Houston, TX. It is revered by other noise artists such as Rusted Shut's Don Walsh, A Pink Cloud's Domokos, and Indian Jewelry's Tex Kerschen, Erika Thrasher and Brandon Davis, amongst other noise bands and experimental bands

A tag has been placed on A Thousand Cranes requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done under section A7 of the criteria for speedy deletion, because the article appears to be about a band, but it does not indicate how or why the subject is notable: that is, why an article about that subject should be included in an encyclopedia. Under the criteria for speedy deletion, articles that do not indicate the subject's importance or significance may be deleted at any time. Please see the guidelines for what is generally accepted as notable, as well as our subject-specific notability guideline for musical topics.

If you think that this notice was placed here in error, you may contest the deletion by adding {{hangon}} to the top of the page (just below the existing speedy deletion or "db" tag), coupled with adding a note on the talk page explaining your position, but be aware that once tagged for speedy deletion, if the article meets the criterion it may be deleted without delay. Please do not remove the speedy deletion tag yourself, but don't hesitate to add information to the article that would would render it more in conformance with Wikipedia's policies and guidelines. Lastly, please note that if the article does get deleted, you can contact one of these admins to request that a copy be emailed to you. ukexpat (talk) 19:34, 29 March 2008 (UTC)[reply]

I deleted it because, as the speedy tagger noted, the article made no assertions of notability. Until and unless it gets restored, only admins can review it. See WP:BAND and, if you can show me with the appropriate reliable sources that the musicians involved meet those notability standards, then it can be restored. I have reviewed the sources you provided. First, since you seem to be a member of this ensemble, I will ask that you read and review our conflict of interest policy. There could be some problems there.

Second, of the sources you provided, the Houston Press article is the only one that meets the reliable source guidelines. Blogs are not usually considered reliable, and we don't use our own articles as sources (although the information within both, if it is itself traced to a reliable source, is usable).

If I restore it and let you put the sources in, I will probably put it up for a deletion vote so the notability issue can be decided by the community (other than the nomination, I would take no part in that discussion ... another administrator would make the closure and decide whether consensus called for keep or delete.) I am honestly not optimistic that, as it stands right now, the article would be kept due to the COI issues and lack of a current discography. Certainly, if the article were kept, you would have to follow the COI policy strictly regarding any subsequenty edits to it.

The strongest argument for a keep would be your past in Indian Jewelry and number 7 under WP:BAND: "the most prominent representative of a notable style or of the local scene of a city" (However, please note that those two categories are exclusive; they do not create an overlapping category for most prominent representative of a particular style within a city's music scene, so you can't claim notability just for being the first/only sacred noise band in Houston).

Given all this, would you like to go ahead with restoring the article now or wait till some point in the future when you have, perhaps, a stronger claim to notability? This certainly isn't personal; despite your recreation of the article it seems to me you are willing to follow our policies, and you are certainly being civil. I just hope you understand we get a lot of articles about bands and we certainly can't include them all. It is our goal as an encyclopedia to reflect notability, not confer it. You want me to delete that section from my talk page? Did you still want me to restore the article? I'm terribly sorry I got busy and it got lost in the shuffle. Really, I am. Daniel Case (talk) 00:46, 7 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]

AfD discussion is here. I have removed that section from my talk page (it should take a while to stop showing up on Google, though). Daniel Case (talk) 18:13, 7 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]
