Speedy deletion of Global Health Council

A tag has been placed on Global Health Council, requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done under section G11 of the criteria for speedy deletion, because the article seems to be blatant advertising which only promotes a company, product, group, service or person and would need to be fundamentally rewritten in order to become an encyclopedia article. Please read the guidelines on spam as well as Wikipedia:FAQ/Business for more information.

If you think that this notice was placed here in error, you may contest the deletion by adding {{hangon}} to the top of the page that has been nominated for deletion (just below the existing speedy deletion or "db" tag), coupled with adding a note on the talk page explaining your position, but be aware that once tagged for speedy deletion, if the article meets the criterion it may be deleted without delay. Please do not remove the speedy deletion tag yourself, but don't hesitate to add information to the article that would would render it more in conformance with Wikipedia's policies and guidelines. Lastly, please note that if the article does get deleted, you can contact one of these admins to request that a copy be emailed to you.  RGTraynor  19:16, 9 October 2008 (UTC)

This account has been blocked indefinitely from editing Wikipedia, because it has been identified as an account used for promotion of a company or group, with a username that implies that this has been done by that company or group. See Wikipedia:Business' FAQ and Wikipedia:Conflict of interest.

This kind of activity is considered spamming and is forbidden by Wikipedia policies. In addition, the use of a username like yours violates our username policy.

You may appeal this block by adding the text {{unblock|your reason here}} below or emailing the administrator who blocked you.

Your reason should include your response to this issue and a new username you wish to adopt that does not violate our username policy (specifically, understand that accounts are for individuals, not companies or groups, and that your username should reflect this). Usernames that have already been taken are listed here.

Image copyright problem with Image:Mannportrait.jpg

Image Copyright problem
Image Copyright problem

Thank you for uploading Image:Mannportrait.jpg. However, it currently is missing information on its copyright status. Wikipedia takes copyright very seriously. It may be deleted soon, unless we can determine the license and the source of the image. If you know this information, then you can add a copyright tag to the image description page.

If you have uploaded other files, consider checking that you have specified their license and tagged them, too. You can find a list of files you have uploaded by following this link.

If you have any questions, please feel free to ask them at the media copyright questions page. Thanks again for your cooperation. J Milburn (talk) 17:36, 15 October 2008 (UTC)

User page

The text on this user page was deleted as a copyright violation of [2]. If you have legal authority to release this information under our license, please see the directions at Wikipedia:Donating copyrighted materials. Often it is easier to simply write new material which avoids the copyright issues. However, you still need to be aware of our conflict of interest policy when writing about subjects with which you are associated. Rmhermen (talk) 15:16, 16 October 2008 (UTC)

Another article you have edited has been flagged for copyright issues (which predate your account's contributions). I seems likely that with your interest in the subject you could help us create a suitable article on this important topic. Rmhermen (talk) 15:46, 16 October 2008 (UTC)

Your username

Hello, and welcome to Wikipedia!

I hope not to seem unfriendly or make you feel unwelcome, but I noticed your username, and I am concerned that it might not meet Wikipedia's username policy for the following reason: appears to be a WP:Role account. After you look over that policy, could we discuss that concern here?

I'd appreciate learning your own views, for instance your reasons for wanting this particular name, and what alternative username you might accept that avoids raising this concern.

You have several options freely available to you:

rename request

Globalhealthcouncil → Ribbonthree Current name: Globalhealthcouncil (talk · contribs · logs · block log) Requested name: Ribbonthree (SUL conflicts?) (rename user) Reason: the original username is the name of a company, which is in violation of Wikipedia's rule. Apologies. Globalhealthcouncil (talk) 15:52, 17 October 2008 (UTC)

You were blocked not only because your name is a violation, but also because you created an article about the Global Health Council, in violation of our rules on conflict of interest. Do you understand why this is a problem? --Orange Mike | Talk 16:19, 17 October 2008 (UTC)

Yes, I do, sorry.--Globalhealthcouncil (talk) 16:49, 17 October 2008 (UTC)

{{unblock|Hi there, we are new to the Wikipedia scape - less than 10 days, and while we did read quite a bit of the information, it is a bit onerous and we do regret making as many mistakes as we did. We wanted to add an entry because other people and organizations have asked us to. We would like others to at least have the opportunity to create an entry for this organization. Please advise as to what the next actions migth be. So sorry again. Thank you}}

Your request to be unblocked has been granted for the following reason(s):

Allowing username change to ribbonthree (talk · contribs). Please put this request in at Wikipedia:Changing username as soon as possible to avoid re-blocking.

Request handled by: Garden. 22:19, 17 October 2008 (UTC)

Please, could you please change the username so it is no longer in violation of wikipedia's username guidelines and conflict of interest guidelines and also unblock this IP address? It was a new user mistake. I was just going to change it when we got blocked. So very sorry... Thank you very much.

Please file your request at Wikipedia:Changing username as soon as possible. Any further spamming will result in that account also being blocked. Thank you for your patience; I hope you will stick around on Wikipedia and help the project grow. Garden. 22:21, 17 October 2008 (UTC)

Orphaned non-free media (Image:Candlelightsmall.jpg)

Thanks for uploading Image:Candlelightsmall.jpg. The media description page currently specifies that it is non-free and may only be used on Wikipedia under a claim of fair use. However, it is currently orphaned, meaning that it is not used in any articles on Wikipedia. If the media was previously in an article, please go to the article and see why it was removed. You may add it back if you think that that will be useful. However, please note that media for which a replacement could be created are not acceptable for use on Wikipedia (see our policy for non-free media).

If you have uploaded other unlicensed media, please check whether they're used in any articles or not. You can find a list of 'image' pages you have edited by clicking on the "my contributions" link (it is located at the very top of any Wikipedia page when you are logged in), and then selecting "Image" from the dropdown box. Note that all non-free media not used in any articles will be deleted after seven days, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. Thank you. BJBot (talk) 03:32, 18 October 2008 (UTC)

Unblocked

Hiya. As you can see, an admin has unblocked you. I think it's probably best if we go with what I proposed to you in my reply to your email, at least for a little while. For now, I have created your sandbox at User:Globalhealthcouncil/Sandbox. How about for the next few weeks you post there any edits you want to make, I'll look over them (and ask a few friends to help out), just to give you a nice double-check that you're being neutral and using reliable sources.

I'll also help you through the process for requesting that your username be changed, as I just changed my own.

How does that sound? roux ] [x] 01:05, 18 October 2008 (UTC)

FWIW, this is a bit bitey, the GHC is certainly notable and this user just made the mistake of being forthright they they were editing about their company. If you want help recreating the article I'd be happy to help. -- Banjeboi 03:05, 18 October 2008 (UTC)
Hey Benj... it's not, and I'm sorry if it seems that way. I'm just trying to ensure that there are no impediments to continuing productive editing from GHC. We have been in touch via email and I've spoken to a couple admins about this. Thank you for looking out for the new editors though! roux ] [x] 03:31, 18 October 2008 (UTC)

Hi there, thank you both for your offer to help! It is very kind and I will definitely take you up on it. I'm going to regroup (recover from Wiki trauma of last week) and I've put in a request for a name change for now. Thank you, thank you and I'll be in touch. --20:29, 20 October 2008 (UTC)Globalhealthcouncil (talk)

Roux, respectfully I completely disagree. this user, unlike - arguably - many newbies here wasn't adding anything false or misleading or otherwise inflating the role of their organization. I've read about GHC before in looking through the history of the AIDS pandemic, the Intl AIDS Candlelight thingy they coordinate does indeed seem to be the worlds largest event of it's kind and GHC is the international coordinator of such. Agreed to avoid COI it's usually best for others to write such an article but those rules exist, in short, to protect our readers from falsehoods and Wikipedia from embarrassment. neither of those situations seem to be at issue here. I wasn't looking for yet another project as my plate is full but this seems a classic example of a genuine entity trying to make the project better and needing some hand-holding to explain that COI issues are real and sources need to be utilized to mitigate those concerns. I would be more concerned if I saw anything there that was false or misleading. -- Banjeboi 20:41, 22 October 2008 (UTC)

Helping

Hiya.

I'd be more than happy to help you out, but can we agree on a framework for doing so?

  • I need you to request that the username be changed
  • I need your assurance that one person, and only one person, has access to the account. Group accounts are explicitly forbidden by Wikipedia policy
  • I would like you to stick to putting edits in your sandbox to be vetted until you're a lot more familiar with Wikipedia policy. Nobody wants to see you blocked again!

If that's cool with you, I'll be more than happy to help out. Sound good? Reply here--I have this page watched, and it makes more sense to keep everything together. roux ] [x] 20:30, 20 October 2008 (UTC)

Found your e-mail message buried in our SPAM filter. I'd love for you to help. I've requested that the username be changed and it's going to be just my account. Yes, putting things in the sandbox for vetting would be great! Another person who does not have a conflict of interest volunteered to do our entry for us - under their own account. So that will be more kosher. However, I will probably edit/add as needed. There is an existing Wikipedia entry on one of our programs- we didn't create it, but it is in need of some updating, so I'll start with that to practice. Meanwhile, I've put in for the name change and will sit tight until I hear back from that. Again, many, many, MANY thanks.

You're welcome. I think it's probably best for you to stay at arms length from articles about your org or its programs for now, just to avoid even the appearance of a conflict of interest. What do you think? roux ] [x] 20:56, 20 October 2008 (UTC)
It should also be noted that a friend of your organization, creating an article at your request, is just as much in a conflict of interest (it's as if I volunteered to do an article about my brother's garage band). --Orange Mike | Talk 16:38, 21 October 2008 (UTC)

We haven't asked anyone to do an entry on us, a number of people external to the organization - they neither work or benefit from our work - have come volunteered.

People who work with you or benefit from your work still have a conflict of interest. Roux has the best idea. --Orange Mike | Talk 14:53, 22 October 2008 (UTC)
I think your best bet is to have someone on Wikipedia do this. If you click here, you will see our 'Articles for Creation' page. You can place a request there to have the article created. It may take some time, but it should guarantee absolute neutrality--which includes evaluating whether your org is notable enough to have an entry (I don't think that will be a problem, but it's best to have an unbiased opinion or two). roux ] [x] 14:28, 22 October 2008 (UTC)

OMG. THANK YOU. I would much prefer that. However, I just visited the link and followed the steps and it appears as though I would still be contributing the content?

No, don't try to write a draft article; just provide links to some sources of impartial information as to the nature and notability of the organization (i.e., not its own website) to make it clear why this group should have an article here. --Orange Mike | Talk 14:53, 22 October 2008 (UTC)
Globalhealthcouncil, I'll take a stab at rewriting it. Once I get the page going you can start posting good sources or ideas to the talkpage since you've been admonished so much. meanwhile you may wish to poke around other articles to see what good (and terrible ones) look like. I've been a bit busy lately but feel free to ask me or the other folks here for help. -- Banjeboi 20:45, 22 October 2008 (UTC)

Boldly cleaned up

Globalhealthcouncil, I've boldly cleaned up your talk and archived a bunch of the previous threads which seem to have run their course. -- Banjeboi 20:45, 22 October 2008 (UTC)

Name change

Also, I've contacted the editor who indicated the name change had happened to see what the status is. -- Banjeboi 20:48, 22 October 2008 (UTC)
