Thank you

Thank you so much for your kind words on my talk page. It is very refreshing indeed to find that there are still some voices of reason within this cacophonous choir. — To address your “converse argument”, I know what you’re saying and I acknowledge all of it. I do not advocate that notability should be ignored or that there shouldn’t be any standards to be upheld. By all means, slap a box on the top of the page telling readers about the perceived issues with the article, explaining why it is inadequate, and listing ways in which it could be improved. By all means have a rule that such articles which are inadequate by these standards cannot be linked to from other articles. But delete? Remove from existence? Completely deprive the world of it? I cannot comprehend, on any dimension, the desire to destroy work. I simply cannot fathom it. I do not inhabit that mental space. — Timwi (talk) 08:15, 7 February 2022 (UTC)

@Timwi: To see me walking a mile in your shoes, consider Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Pink cat (note this happened just as COVID-19 lockdowns broke out so I was not in a good mood generally). Ultimately, Wikipedia works on consensus and we sometimes have to accept a result that doesn't go the way we want. (As you can probably guess from looking at my user page, I would never vote for Donald Trump or Boris Johnson to lead a village fete let alone anything else - again, sometimes we have to accept things we don't like). Yes, not only did he never show any arrogance or pomposity, and always pronounced everything perfectly but, like Victoria Coren Mitchell says, you got the feeling that he actually knew all the answers anyway and had probably written all the questions himself. He even gave quick impromptu explanations for some of the wrong answers! Martinevans123 (talk) 16:38, 8 February 2022 (UTC)

"Drop the stick and back slowly away from the horse carcass."

"Correct, and finally, what isn't AGF?"

"A bad idea?"

"No, AGF is not a suicide pact, another starter for ten....." Ritchie333 (talk) (cont) 18:04, 8 February 2022 (UTC)

Hello Ritchie333, I'm the creator of the article of American actor Steve Clark (actor), I now that you placed a tag requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia, because you noticed that the article appears to be about a real person or group of people that does not credibly indicate. Just for you to now that the actor has 319 credits on his career, also in Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Steve Clark (actor) John Pack Lambert (talk) said that it shoud be deleted because it lacked of reliable sources providing signifant coverage with Find-a-grave and IMDb sources not been reliable, it should be noted that I put them only as temporary sources until I found more reliable, which I already did and I already replaced the Find-a-grave and IMDb sources with more reliable sources that proves a signifant coverage. It should also be noted that this article is still under construction and I'm also fixing some other minor problems. I already write my reasons and my proofs of why this article should not be deleted on the Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Steve Clark (actor) to which you haven't closed yet, so would it be possible please that you to close the discussion and remove the Speedy deletion nomination tag from the article?Latyelcop (talk 01:28, 9 February 2022 (UTC)

@Latyelcop: The speedy deletion tag was placed by Fram. ([1]). I removed the tag ([2]) as I didn't believe it met the criteria of being an article that was blatantly not suitable for an encyclopedia. However, since I wasn't sure what else to do, and couldn't easily find any sources (which is not helped by other people with the same name like the Def Leppard guitarist), I thought I'd start a formal discussion about it. Part of the problem in this case is the best source material is likely to be long out-of-print books and newspapers which will be hard to find. Ritchie333 (talk) (cont) 09:33, 9 February 2022 (UTC)

AARV -> ANI

I have moved the AARV discussion over to WP:ANI#Deletion and undeletion of copyvios, and the right venue to discuss these. Fram (talk) 16:06, 9 February 2022 (UTC)

@EEng: (For those playing at home, we're talking about this) If you'd have said "I think we need a completely independent secondary source for this" then I might have understood but "what???" could mean just about anything, from someone telling me the milk's off, or the shop's run out of bread, or that Putin's found another country he wants to have a go at invading, or that Princess Diana has been found alive, or that somebody points out I've agreed on something with Piers Morgan, or ... well, you get the drift? GOKUL - Help with Page Creation

hi you just deleted the page i created. Please let me know why?? https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gokul_Rajendran — Preceding unsigned comment added by Mr cosmic king (talkcontribs) 11:04, 15 February 2022 (UTC)

It hasn't been deleted, it's been moved to Draft:Gokul Rajendran as there was a consensus the page hasn't been developed sufficiently to be suitable for a standalone article yet. Follow the instructions at the top of the page to see what to do next. Ritchie333 (talk) (cont) 11:15, 15 February 2022 (UTC)

Note that http://www.hazegray.org/danfs/yard/yf854.htm is a direct copy of the public domain Dictionary of American Naval Fighting Ships - - see also https://www.history.navy.mil/research/histories/ship-histories/danfs/l/littlehales-ii.html, so the deletion was unnecessary.Nigel Ish (talk) 18:30, 15 February 2022 (UTC)

Nigel Ish, Ah, okay, so it's a US government public domain source. Fram (who tagged the article for G12 copyvio deletion), are you okay in me reversing the revision deletions here? Ritchie333 (talk) (cont) 18:58, 15 February 2022 (UTC)
Yes, once the attribution is OK, the reason for deletion is gone. Fram (talk) 20:26, 15 February 2022 (UTC)
Okay, I've reverted the revision delete. Haven't done anything else with the article, I'll leave that to the MILHIST experts. Ritchie333 (talk) (cont) 20:28, 15 February 2022 (UTC)

True, and the US is not exactly unknown for having unpronounceable signs. Never get into an argument with someone from Nevada about how to pronounce their state's name. Looks easy, but no. And Arkansas does not rhyme with Kansas. (But "Paunch-a-train", that's easy.) I looked up "Mac" in the index. --Tryptofish (talk) 21:27, 15 February 2022 (UTC)

DYK for Magic Tour (Queen)

On 17 February 2022, Did you know was updated with a fact from the article Magic Tour (Queen), which you recently created, substantially expanded, or brought to good article status. The fact was ... that the 1986 Magic Tour was the last tour Freddie Mercury performed with Queen? The nomination discussion and review may be seen at Template:Did you know nominations/Magic Tour (Queen). You are welcome to check how many pageviews the nominated article or articles got while on the front page (here's how, Magic Tour (Queen)), and if they received a combined total of at least 416.7 views per hour (i.e., 5,000 views in 12 hours or 10,000 in 24), the hook may be added to the statistics page. Finally, if you know of an interesting fact from another recently created article, then please feel free to suggest it on the Did you know talk page.

Was too young to go to see Queen on this tour, so I thought by the time they do the next tour c. 1989 / 1990, I'll be old enough. Still, my biggest "d'oh!" moment is turning down the offer to see The Who in 1999, thinking it would be a repeat of "The Who On Ice" 1989 tour. Nope, it was a return to basics and their best tour in 20 years. Talk about being in the bath when opportunity knocked. Ritchie333 (talk) (cont) 14:35, 17 February 2022 (UTC)

WP:AFC Helper News

Hello! I wanted to drop a quick note for all of our AFC participants; nothing huge and fancy like a newsletter, but a few points of interest.

  • AFCH will now show live previews of the comment to be left on a decline.
  • The template {{db-afc-move}} has been created - this template is similar to {{db-move}} when there is a redirect in the way of an acceptance, but specifically tells the patrolling admin to let you (the draft reviewer) take care of the actual move.

Short and sweet, but there's always more to discuss at WT:AFC. Stop on by, maybe review a draft on the way? Whether you're one of our top reviewers, or haven't reviewed in a while, I want to thank you for helping out in the past and in the future. The pic I took in 2009 is on the German MP today, with this song from 1885, and I updated my personal pics to 3 March, when a symphony concert was dedicated to the victims of the 2022 invasion. I know several people have been on anti-war marches here. Meanwhile, I've removed all political user boxes from my page (see below two threads) so I'm going to have to refrain from talking about politics in the future. It should be obvious what I think of the situation. Ritchie333 (talk) (cont) 11:49, 8 March 2022 (UTC)
It is obvious. I post an image, it says (to me): "stand and sing" which was my attitude towards the arbs who didn't look (as it was Bach's when he set the words to music, and Gardiner thought he expressed how Luther stood in Worms), and is now. Only that two of the young women on the image slept in my house when they came to sing for us, and I tremble thinking of what may happen to them. - I wanted to go to a charity concert tomorrow: sold out (which is good). I wrote about a composer featured, and guess what: it was accepted for DYK. Although all hooks related to Russia and Ukraine are on hold, as possibly "taking sides", - there's an RfC, can you believe that? I take sides with the Russians who face prison if they speak up. --Gerda Arendt (talk) 14:42, 8 March 2022 (UTC)
I've just spent the past 45 minutes reading Marina Ovsyannikova and the related AfD. I think Thryduulf said it best : "This is a classic case of an article created too soon that was then nominated for deletion too soon". On the one hand, it's easy for experienced Wikipedians to see the arguments to avoid in the debate; on the other it's not necessarily obvious that the article (and consequently the AfD) was broadcast all over the world and consequently the ratio of inexperienced editors compared to experienced wanting to say something was possibly in the region of 20:1. And consequently appealing to stick to Wikipedia policies and guidelines was going to be as about as effective as Canute (allegedly) telling the tide to please stop coming in. As this essay points out, "Outside readers, organizations and individuals will also read your words in the context of generally understood meanings, not Wikipedia-specific definitions. Appeals to Wikipedia rules and processes will not save you from misunderstandings or real-world consequences." I think we sometimes lose sight of that when the day to day activity of encyclopedia writing and administration is generally ignored by the wider world. (note to talk page stalkers, this is in reference to Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Michael Masini) The simple advice is - do not write articles about yourself. See here for some good reasons why. Ritchie333 (talk) (cont) 10:52, 22 March 2022 (UTC)

Need you to check this

There is a VRT ticket that needs to be considered. It appears to me we have a WP:ATTACK page that should be a G10 but an editor took it to AFD. Atsme 💬 📧 15:25, 21 March 2022 (UTC)

Sorry, only just got round to looking at this. I have given discretionary sanction alerts to the two major participants at the AfD; beyond that, I think it is best to let the discussion play out. I can't easily tell what statements are BLP violations as I'm not familiar with Norwegian sources. If any disruption continues, now parties have been alerted, you can try Arbitration Enforcement. Worrying edit summary

Yes, this worried me a bit when it turned up on my watchlist. I had to go look, just to make sure my old friend wasn't in really bad trouble. 🙂 Bishonen | tålk 21:41, 23 March 2022 (UTC).

Guess what.... [5] Haha. Martinevans123 (talk) 16:27, 19 March 2022 (UTC)

Just need a GA-compliant source for it. If it's difficult to find one, it probably indicates it's not that important. Ritchie333 (talk) (cont) 10:28, 23 March 2022 (UTC)
Jacob was a real Floyd head, you know. Amazon here says "Series music was by Dudley Simpson with Brian Hodgson and the BBC Radiophonic Workshop. Additional music includes, amongst others, music by Pink Floyd." But that's a commercial promo source, of course. Martinevans123 (talk) 10:45, 23 March 2022 (UTC)
And just to lighten he mood, here he is in 1974, talking with Michael Parkinson, about his visit to Auschwitz. A very wise and thoughtful man. Martinevans123 (talk) 22:13, 23 March 2022 (UTC)

Activity requirements

Regarding this edit: could you reconsider your feedback on the activity of the commenter in question? I think the pros and cons of the proposal are clear enough without having to examine the activity of those commenting. I appreciate your consideration in this matter. isaacl (talk) 21:30, 22 March 2022 (UTC)

I think Observations of Wikipedia point 59 said it best : "When an editor ceases to contribute to articles, but instead writes only in the Wikipedia space, on talk pages, and arbitration cases, and when more than half of that editor's contributions are in conflicts, either beginning or prolonging them, then that editor is very close to departure." Certainly, all the times I have encountered arguments, I have found that looking at an article and improving it a bit are good ways to end the day's editing session in a better frame of mind. And I know a number of people who Jimbo once notoriously described as "annoying user, good content" who have quit (or been blocked from) the project as soon as their prolific mainspace contributions dried up. Ritchie333 (talk) (cont) 12:25, 23 March 2022 (UTC)
There are also the users who get distracted by other things in their life. Such as me, courtesy of the 2022 Russian invasion of Ukraine which while not affecting me personally is distracting me from Wikipedia work. I think it will be temporary, though. Jo-Jo Eumerus (talk) 12:34, 23 March 2022 (UTC)
It's hard to say. The last 5-7 years have seen us lurch from one crisis to another. First it was Brexit, then COVID (so everyone forgot about Brexit), then the Ukraine War (so everyone forgot about COVID). In that context, tinkering away on Apple hardware, old electromechanical keyboards or random streets in London and Dublin, seems like light relief. Ritchie333 (talk) (cont) 12:41, 23 March 2022 (UTC)
Sure; all I'm saying is I think examining the edits of one particular editor distracts from that point. Thanks for your time in considering this aspect. isaacl (talk) 22:34, 23 March 2022 (UTC)

March songs

March songs

Listening to the charity concert mentioned here. I created the articles of the composer and the soprano. - We just reached Bravo! --Gerda Arendt (talk) 21:00, 10 March 2022 (UTC)

Now, you can also listen on YouTube, and more music, the piece by Anna Korsun begins after about one hour, and the voices call "Freiheit!" (freedom, instead of "Freude", joy). Music every day, pictured in songs. --Gerda Arendt (talk) 17:20, 14 March 2022 (UTC)

The Prayer is on the Main page, finally + new flowers, and btw: the TFA is a young writer's first --Gerda Arendt (talk) 21:33, 23 March 2022 (UTC)

Today: Bach's No. 1. - I nominated now BWV 56. - Sad record: I brought three articles to the Recent deaths section, - not at the same time today but still ... - two of the three from Ukraine, the third a Russian who left Moscow in 1990, and then went on to conduct the orchestra where my brother plays. --Gerda Arendt (talk) 20:04, 25 March 2022 (UTC)

Thanks for the new barnstar! - Sunday flowers and sounds, don't miss the extraordinary marriage of the beginnings of the theme of Wie schön leuchtet der Morgenstern, BWV 1, and Prayer for Ukraine - here! --Gerda Arendt (talk) 20:11, 27 March 2022 (UTC)

exquisite voice today --Gerda Arendt (talk) 16:09, 29 March 2022 (UTC)

Your thoughts

Bill Direen - a musician from New Zealand. BLP looks promotional to me. Atsme 💬 📧 15:45, 30 March 2022 (UTC)

The article looks like a complete mess and could certainly benefit from a big ol' stick of dynamite stuck underneath it, but I don't think it's quite at the level of putting {{db-spam}} on it. You could always try AfD. Ritchie333 (talk) (cont) 16:20, 30 March 2022 (UTC)
I tagged it for rewrite. Also got over 300k Google results using Bill Direen but he also went by William. I'll post something in the relative Project page. Thanks for your input. Atsme 💬 📧 17:12, 30 March 2022 (UTC)
(talk page watcher) Atsme, I've restored about 280 earlier revisions of the page which had got lost due to a c&p move in 2015. Don't know if that makes any difference to the present state of it, but at least it makes it possible to see how it got that way. Regards, Justlettersandnumbers (talk) 19:47, 30 March 2022 (UTC)
Thank you, JLAN!!! I'll see what can be done, and also noticed that the image processing through VRT had not been finalized so I did that, too. Thanks again! Atsme 💬 📧 21:25, 30 March 2022 (UTC)

Audrey Hepburn

Hi, I see User:ErnestKrause promoted the Hepburn article to GA but I can't see where the books were used to improve it. Do you still have the books? Ernest we have half a dozen books and intended getting it up to GA status!

Pimlico would be a good one to get to GA BTW.♦ Dr. Blofeld 10:26, 30 March 2022 (UTC)

Dr. Blofeld, I don't have the books, I asked Daria to give them to Bettydaisies as she seemed more experienced and interested in getting the article to GA. As far as I know, that happened.
As for Pimlico, I recall improving the eponymous station to try and get it to GA (along with every other station on the Victoria Line) but got stuck for sources. Same's happened with Farfisa, there's a bunch of info about commercially unsuccessful and obscure synths from the 70s I don't have any sources for either. Ritchie333 (talk) (cont) 10:41, 30 March 2022 (UTC)
Regarding Audrey Hepburn, the article was nominated by me several months ago and was promoted to GA at that time. The list of over a dozen books used for the GAN is listed in the Bibliography section of that article which comes after the References. If anyone might be interested in possibly taking the article for FA nomination with the use of more reference books now available to enhance the article, then this might be good timing for such an FA improvement to the article. ErnestKrause (talk) 14:45, 30 March 2022 (UTC)
Thanks both. It would be good to see it brought up to FA status but needs a fair bit of work I think. I got sidetracked from doing it myself when I ran a series of contests and then I ran out of steam on here. If the books are put to good use WMUK will be pleased. The objective though was to get it to GA which it now is, so well done!♦ Dr. Blofeld 09:57, 31 March 2022 (UTC)

DYK for Mac Studio

On 21 March 2022, Did you know was updated with a fact from the article Mac Studio, which you recently created, substantially expanded, or brought to good article status. The fact was ... that the faster version of the Mac Studio is 2 pounds (910 g) heavier than the slower one? The nomination discussion and review may be seen at Template:Did you know nominations/Mac Studio. You are welcome to check how many pageviews the nominated article or articles got while on the front page (here's how, Mac Studio), and if they received a combined total of at least 416.7 views per hour (i.e., 5,000 views in 12 hours or 10,000 in 24), the hook may be added to the statistics page. Finally, if you know of an interesting fact from another recently created article, then please feel free to suggest it on the Did you know talk page.

Bureaucracy...

Would you mind helping here, as the "deleting admin"? Wikipedia:Requests_for_undeletion#Satarial. Piotr Konieczny aka Prokonsul Piotrus| reply here 15:11, 1 April 2022 (UTC)

The article, as I deleted it, started off "Satarial was created in 1989 by Lord Seth. It was then called " A.M.S.G. " ( Ad Maiorum Satan Glorium ) and in 1993 changed on Satarial." followed by pages of unsourced gobbledegook. I could restore it to draft for you, but I really think you would be better off writing a short, neutral and sourced article from scratch instead. Ritchie333 (talk) (cont) 21:28, 1 April 2022 (UTC)
If this is it https://second.wiki/wiki/satarial then I think I can at least reuse the infobox/categories/structure, even if most of the text seems like it will have to be thrown out. So if you could restore it in my sandbox, I think I can use it as a base to write a shorter, referenced entry. TIA Piotr Konieczny aka Prokonsul Piotrus| reply here 14:27, 2 April 2022 (UTC)
I've put it in User:Piotrus/Satarial, though I'm not sure exactly what you can do with it. Ritchie333 (talk) (cont) 15:04, 2 April 2022 (UTC)
Thanks. I'll probably junk history replacing it with few sentences I can reference with the sources I saw, AGF the other catalogue-like sections as usually not referenced in most similar articles anyway, and mainspace it... well, we will see in a little while when I get around to actually working on this :) Btw, the reason I became interested in this (and why the band is notable now) is due to Polish media coverage that they are in exile in Poland due to anti-Putin/anti-war activism... Your GA nomination of Farfisa

Careful with that prose, Eugene

The article Farfisa you nominated as a good article has passed ; see Talk:Farfisa for comments about the article. Well done! If the article has not already appeared on the main page as a "Did you know" item, or as a bold link under "In the News" or in the "On This Day" prose section, you can nominate it within the next seven days to appear in DYK. I'll see you that and raise you the coda to "White Hammer" on The Least We Can Do Is Wave to Each Other (a cheery song about Malleus, no not that one), although that would probably sound even better on a Hammond, admittedly. Ritchie333 (talk) (cont) 18:55, 4 April 2022 (UTC)

No, it's a different book. I remember I was adding references in the library and was a bit short of time. Ritchie333 (talk) (cont) 11:30, 10 April 2022 (UTC)

why did you delete my citated note on be careful with that axe eugene you say how is it relavant. How is information that explains the meaning of the song not relevant to it? please stop reverting it. Dr zoidberg590 (talk) 13:52, 10 April 2022 (UTC)

Aside from what makes roadiemusic.com a reliable source for a good article, the source in question has nothing to do with "Careful With That Axe, Eugene". The Good Article criteria, specifically the section on "factually accurate and verifiable" and "focused" have more information. Ritchie333 (talk) (cont) 10:37, 11 April 2022 (UTC)
