So, do you consider deletion a special case?

I think you make a good point about not leaving trivial messages on the pages of retired contributors.

I suggest the user talk pages of retired contributors should still get heads-up about articles they started being nominated for deletion.

  1. They might, after all, decide to return. Those heads-up would be very relevant for them then.
  2. User talk pages are also read by third parties. If I am a third party, who looks at the user talk page of a contributor whose contributions earned my admiration, or concern, I'd like to see whether there is a record of the articles they started triggering enough concern to be nominated for deletion. If I really admired their work I might try to rescue articles they started, if I think the underlying topic was sufficiently notable.
