Korça Medresesi

Okul sözcüğü çocuk ve gençlerin devam ettiği örgün eğitim kurumlarının yanısıra tek bir alanda eğitim veren kurumlar ve bazı yüksek eğitim kurumları için de kullanılır: dans okulu, gazetecilik okulu, meslek yüksek okulu vb. gibi. Okula devam eden kimselere öğrenci denir.

Etimoloji

Okul sözcüğü Türkçeye Fransızca école (ekol) kelimesinden geçmiştir. Bu sözcüğün kökeni Yunanca ????? (skhol?) kelimesidir ve "felsefe ve ders yeri" anlamına gelir. Türkçede Arapça kökenli mektep kelimesi de okul anlamında kullanılır.

Okul sadece bilimsel bilginin verildiği mekanlar değil aynı zamanda kültür, sanat, siyaset gibi öznel kaynaklı derslerinde verildiği eğitim kurumlarıdır.

Okul, eğitim ve öğretim etkinliklerinin gerçekleştirildiği yerdir. Okullarda çeşitli düzeylerde, toplu olarak öğrenim yapılır. Okul eğitimindeki temel amaç, öğrencilerin zihinsel, bedensel ve ahlaksal açıdan gelişmesini sağlamaktır. Okul binaları okulun amacına göre yapılır. Okullar, öğrenci sayısının fazla olduğu bölgelerde çok katlı ve çok derslikli olarak yapılır. Her okulun bir adı vardır. Okul içerisinde derslikler; müdür, müdür yardımcısı, psikolojik danışman, veli görüşme ve öğretmenler odaları, lâboratuvarlar, spor salonu ve iş atölyesi gibi bölümler bulunmaktadır. Bireyler yaşamlarını sürdürebilmeleri için gerekli olan bilgileri en doğru şekilde okulda öğrenirler. Örneğin; okuma-yazma, hastalıklardan korunma, doğa olaylarına karşı önlemler alma gibi. Bir toplumun bilgi ve teknoloji üretebilmesi için yetişmiş insan gücüne gereksinimi vardır. Okul, hem bir bilgi yuvası hem de sosyal etkinliklerin yerine getirildiği bir kurumdur.

Türkiye'de okullar

Türkiye'de okullar genelde devlet kontürolündedir ve Milli Eğitim Bakanlığı veya Yök'e bağlıdır. Ancak özel okullar da mevcuttur. Özel okullarda verilen eğitim de kısmen devlet kontürolündedir. Okullar genelde bilimsel derslerin verildiği mekanlar olarak bilinir. Ancak okul devletin, yani devletin başında bulunan siyasi anlayışın kontürolünde olduğu için özgür olarak kalmazlar devlet erkinin ideolojisi doğrultusunda şekil alırlar.
