Somalia, again

Yes, it is clear that Sweetie1986 (talk · contribs) is the same person as 68.40.41.202 (talk · contribs). RoboRanks - you have again violated the three revert rule on Somali people, as has Sweetie1986 and 68.40.41.202 - if they continue, don't do the same! If you would like page protection, as I would suggest you look into, can you ask at WP:RFPP? Thanks Martinp23 06:43, 20 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Images

[edit]

Hey MM, I noticed you uploaded a lot of Somali-related images. They're basically all tagged as being released by you into the public domain, but I'm sure that you do not hold the copyright for all of them. Sorry, but unless an image is free (both free as in beer and free as in speech), it cannot be used on Wikipedia, unless there's a reason that a free image cannot be used. This latter case is called fair use, but I don't think you could make that claim. You should look on flickr and search specfically for free images (go to advanced search - some, but not all, of the CC licenses there are free enough for Wikipedia standards) or contribute personal images, because the rest will be deleted. — ዮም | (Yom) | TalkcontribsEthiopia 05:39, 28 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]

License tagging for Image:Somali Dervish.jpg

[edit]

Thanks for uploading Image:Somali Dervish.jpg. Wikipedia gets thousands of images uploaded every day, and in order to verify that the images can be legally used on Wikipedia, the source and copyright status must be indicated. Images need to have an image tag applied to the image description page indicating the copyright status of the image. This uniform and easy-to-understand method of indicating the license status allows potential re-users of the images to know what they are allowed to do with the images.

Orphaned fair use image (Image:Keith In SomaliMall.jpg)

[edit]

Thanks for uploading Image:Keith In SomaliMall.jpg. I notice the 'image' page currently specifies that the image is unlicensed for use on Wikipedia and may only be used on Wikipedia under a claim of fair use. However, the image is currently orphaned, meaning that it is not used in any articles on Wikipedia. If the image was previously in an article, please go to the article and see why it was removed. You may add it back if you think that that will be useful. However, please note that images for which a replacement could be created are not acceptable under fair use (see our fair use policy).

If you have uploaded other unlicensed media, please check whether they're used in any articles or not. You can find a list of 'image' pages you have edited by clicking on the "my contributions" link (it is located at the very top of any Wikipedia page when you are logged in), and then selecting "Image" from the dropdown box. Note that any fair use images not used in any articles will be deleted after seven days, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. Thank you. Postcard != stamp

[edit]

Re Image:Somalia-1930's.jpg, in what universe is a postcard the same as a postage stamp? The copyright of a postcard is owned by the (usually private) publisher of the postcard, while the copyright of a stamp is usually owned by a governmental ministry or a postal service. Doesn't matter who owns a physical copy of the postcard - while I would very much like to possess copyright in all the books I've bought, copyright doesn't work that way. So we need to know the publisher and/or photographer of the postcard in order to legitimately keep the image. Stan 03:41, 4 January 2007 (UTC)[reply]

first My bad i mixed the two up sorry, second the link where i got the image from [1] claims Ms F. Favilla from Italy as being the owner of that old postcard please check it if you can and see wether the image can still as you say legitimately be used! RoboRanks 09:42, 5 January 2007 (UTC)[reply]

False licensing information

[edit]

Several images uploaded by you were found to be copyright violations [2]. You have uploaded them asserting you're the author, but they have in fact been taken from different websites. I'm deleting other images you have uploaded. I'm also warning you that you may be blocked from editing Wikipedia if you continue uploading images under false licences. Conscious 11:21, 8 January 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Instead of giving me the in's and out's on how image tagging works you come to me with a bully like message and warn me? is this normal? are you here to chase away new members who want to contribute on wikipedia or are you here to help them figure out how everything works? and you can't just delete all my images many of them are mine so be carefull before just randomly pick one without telling me about it, just like the images that were deleted without me knowing it,nobody notified me on my talk page about them being nominated for deletion and therefore i was never given the chance to correct them, you accuse me of using false licenses intentionally well that's simply not true it had more to do with the fact that as a newbie i was still figuring everything out RoboRanks 11:42, 8 January 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Well, make yourself familiar with Wikipedia:Image use policy and do not violate copyright of others (maybe Wikipedia:Copyright FAQ will be helpful). That's it. Conscious 11:57, 8 January 2007 (UTC)[reply]

I have just noticed that you deleted every single image i uploaded on wiki it is very easy to see your not neutral if you were you wouldn't have deleted them as a whole so i'm sensing something sinister from your actions

  • Hawo tako image is mine and i have the original so return it
  • Ahmed Gurey is mine and i have the original so return it
  • Somali Dervish had the right licence so return it
  • the Somali military images were mine so return it
  • Somali President Aden Osman had the right licence so return it
  • Somali scholars image was created by me so return it
  • Rageh Omar and Ibrahim Warsame had the right licences so return it
  • the images of the Somali directors had the right licences so return them
  • Mogadishu Mosque image was created by a good friend of mine so return it aswell as the image of Mogadishu2006
  • Somalia1988 had the right licence so again return it

and it's definitly not as simple as that's it your violating my rights as a contributor on wikipedia by generalising me as a imagethief because of a few mistakes i made with the trillion different image tags as a newbie and just so you know i will upload my images that are rightfully mine even if you subconciously for some strange reason think there not mine so if you want to block me because i want to use my images then so be it RoboRanks 12:12, 8 January 2007 (UTC)[reply]

There's no generalization; you have stolen images and were caught red-handed. Please feel free to edit Wikipedia and upload images as you see fit. Sure, you have every right to use your images. Conscious 13:03, 8 January 2007 (UTC)[reply]

No my friend there was definitly a generalization case in point the lumping together off all my images and then deleting them as a whole because of your obvious copyright paranoia[3]and thank you i will definitly upload my images and in the future when i spot a newbie who has difficulties with the multiple image tags i will not bully him/her or call the person a thief or nominate all the contribs from this member for speedy deletion no i will try to help him/her the best i can, you have a nice day! Somali writing systems

[edit]

Hi. I was really interested by the articles that you added on the Borama script and Wadaad's writing - lots of new info for me. But I'm a bit concerned about copyright, particularly on the images. Lewis's article is from an academic journal and is therefore almost bound to be copyright. So the Wikipedia articles need to be a re-formulation of what he said, rather than a verbatim copy. See Using copyrighted work from others. And I think that copying some of the article as an image will also be a copyright violation - I'm not an expert, but as I understand it, the process of copying and then creating an image is not enough to allow you to claim copyright; you have to actually be creative. See User-created images. Kind regards. Gailtb 23:13, 4 February 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Like I said, I'm no expert on this, but the info about user-created images, linked above, indicates that just re-copying something with your own hand does not normally give you copyright. I think it would have to be a different piece of writing. Similarly with Borama, I think you'd need to write a different passage. From what I've read at Fair use, I don't think it could be classed as that - Lewis/SOAS are not trying to restrict free speech in any way by holding the copyright. If you're not really, really sure that an image is valid, it's probably better to resist the urge to upload it. Gailtb 08:33, 5 February 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Re:Italian

[edit]

Never. It's just some Italian trying to increase the influence of his language, I guess. I suppose you're referring to this map? Don't worry. I'll download it and change the colors now. Do you know of any Italian-speaking minorities in Mogadishu or any other major Somali city? I know that in Eritrea all the Italian monolinguals have basically died out according to Ethnologue. I'm doing the same with this map. — ዮም | (Yom) | TalkcontribsEthiopia 20:09, 24 February 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Okay, it's done now. Do you know what the situation is with Italian in Libya, though? I didn't touch it since I have no idea, but I imagine it's not very common there either. The Italians weren't the nicest of colonizers and it seems that none of their colonies (except maybe Eritrea to a small extent) have close ties with it or good relations. — ዮም | (Yom) | TalkcontribsEthiopia 20:16, 24 February 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Offer of advice, assistance, or other help

[edit]

Hello RoboRanks! I'm sorry to barge in uninvited, but I noticed you're running afoul of the rather arcane image copyright rules. I thought maybe I could help with some advice, attempt to answer any questions you might have about Wikipedia's image use policy and offer to assist you in addressing the problems. This may all be very annoying, but unfortunately copyright laws are very strict and Wikipedia has to follow them. Try to specify on each image's description page where the image came from, such as scanning a paper copy, or a URL, or a name/alias and method of contact for the photographer. In addition, please mention who owns the copyright to the image. As a guideline, make sure that one of the following is true:

  • you own the all of the rights to the image (usually meaning that you created the image yourself and it doesn't depict the work of someone else or pieces of images to which you don't own the copyright), or
  • you can prove that the copyright holder has licensed the image under a free license, or
  • you can prove that the image is in the public domain, or
  • you believe it is fair use and have included on the image's description page a fair use rationale for the specific use of the image that you intend.

If none of the above are true, you'll need to ask the copyright holder to release the image under the GFDL or other free license. Wikipedia has a page at WP:COPYREQ that helps to explain how to go about requesting permission to use other people's work in Wikipedia. In particular, if they don't specifically agree to the GFDL or one of the other standard free licenses, they must agree to allow modification, redistribution, and use for any purpose, including commercial purposes. Finally, the image description page must contain an appropriate and accurate image copyright tag. If you like, I am more than willing to attempt to answer any question you might have. Just post them here, in response to this note, and I'll try to back to you quickly. —RP88 07:03, 2 March 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Hi! many of the links your provided were very beneficial to me, and i have taken action against images i have uploaded after being informed about it possibly not being in public domain and currently i'm asking the owners if they could release it under a CC license (some aren't even aware they have this option), if i ever have difficulties with an image or a image tag i will contact you! Hello, someone has nominated for deletion an article you created called Abdullah M. Farah. After noticing this during my usual Wikipedia patrolling, I thought I would attempt to verify the information in your article, and I was having trouble finding suitable Google matches for the name. I soon discovered that the article name is likely incorrect. I believe the first name is Abdullahi, not Abdullah. I've mentioned this discrepency on the article's "Request for Deletion" page located here, and cited some sources that I found using google, to show that the claims made in the article are truthful. Cheers, - Itsfullofstars 01:08, 6 March 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Since you asked for assistance, I've added a fair use copyright tag to Image:Somali Dervish.jpg for you. To make this photo compliant with Wikipedia's image use policy you still need to do three things:

  • update the summary to describe where you got the image (specify a URL if you copied it from elsewhere, or, if you took the photo yourself, just say that),
  • if possible, please identify the year the statue was erected and who the artist was that created it (these are important details for copyright compliance),
  • make sure that both of the articles Somalia and Mohammed Abdullah Hassan actually specifically discuss the statue itself, not just the man represented by the statue. It's not fair use of the statue's copyright to use the statue to provide an illustration of Sayyid Abdullah Hassan, you need to talk about the statue. You might have to remove the image from Somalia since it seems a bit of a stretch to add these details to Somalia. —RP88 07:09, 6 March 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Orphaned non-free media (Image:Cd magool.jpg)

[edit]

Thanks for uploading Image:Cd magool.jpg. The media description page currently specifies that it is non-free and may only be used on Wikipedia under a claim of fair use. However, it is currently orphaned, meaning that it is not used in any articles on Wikipedia. If the media was previously in an article, please go to the article and see why it was removed. You may add it back if you think that that will be useful. However, please note that media for which a replacement could be created are not acceptable for use on Wikipedia (see our policy for non-free media).

Note that all non-free media not used in any articles will be deleted after seven days, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. Thank you. BetacommandBot 14:06, 9 September 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Image source problem with Image:Wadaad's Writing.jpg

[edit]
Image Copyright problem
Image Copyright problem

Thanks for uploading Image:Wadaad's Writing.jpg. I noticed that the file's description page currently doesn't specify who created the content, so the copyright status is unclear. If you did not create this file yourself, you will need to specify the owner of the copyright. If you obtained it from a website, then a link to the website from which it was taken, together with a restatement of that website's terms of use of its content, is usually sufficient information. However, if the copyright holder is different from the website's publisher, their copyright should also be acknowledged.

As well as adding the source, please add a proper copyright licensing tag if the file doesn't have one already. If you created/took the picture, audio, or video then the {{GFDL-self}} tag can be used to release it under the GFDL. If you believe the media meets the criteria at Wikipedia:Non-free content, use a tag such as {{non-free fair use in|article name}} or one of the other tags listed at Wikipedia:Image copyright tags#Fair use. See Wikipedia:Image copyright tags for the full list of copyright tags that you can use.

If you have uploaded other files, consider checking that you have specified their source and tagged them, too. You can find a list of files you have uploaded by following this link. Unsourced and untagged images may be deleted one week after they have been tagged, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. If the image is copyrighted under a non-free license (per Wikipedia:Fair use) then the image will be deleted 48 hours after 20:33, 9 May 2008 (UTC). If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you. Angus McLellan (Talk) 20:33, 9 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Speedy deletion of Image:HawoTakoFreedom.jpg

[edit]

A tag has been placed on Image:HawoTakoFreedom.jpg requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done under section I8 of the criteria for speedy deletion, because it is available as a bit-for-bit identical copy on the Wikimedia Commons under the same name, or all references to the image on Wikipedia have been updated to point to the title used at Commons.

If you think that this notice was placed here in error, you may contest the deletion by adding {{hangon}} to the top of the page that has been nominated for deletion (just below the existing speedy deletion or "db" tag), coupled with adding a note on [[ Talk:Image:HawoTakoFreedom.jpg|the talk page]] explaining your position, but be aware that once tagged for speedy deletion, if the article meets the criterion it may be deleted without delay. Please do not remove the speedy deletion tag yourself, but don't hesitate to add information to the article that would would render it more in conformance with Wikipedia's policies and guidelines. Lastly, please note that if the article does get deleted, you can contact one of these admins to request that a copy be emailed to you. Sdrtirs (talk) 17:56, 17 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Hi,
You appear to be eligible to vote in the current Arbitration Committee election. The Arbitration Committee is the panel of editors responsible for conducting the Wikipedia arbitration process. It has the authority to enact binding solutions for disputes between editors, primarily related to serious behavioural issues that the community has been unable to resolve. This includes the ability to impose site bans, topic bans, editing restrictions, and other measures needed to maintain our editing environment. The arbitration policy describes the Committee's roles and responsibilities in greater detail. If you wish to participate, you are welcome to review the candidates' statements and submit your choices on the voting page. If this is the first article that you have created, you may want to read the guide to writing your first article.

You may want to consider using the Article Wizard to help you create articles.

A tag has been placed on Muhammad ibn 'Abdullaah Al-Somali requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done under section A7 of the criteria for speedy deletion, because the article appears to be about a person, a group of people, an individual animal, an organization (band, club, company, etc.), web content, or an organized event, but it does not credibly indicate how or why the subject is important or significant: that is, why an article about that subject should be included in an encyclopedia. Under the criteria for speedy deletion, such articles may be deleted at any time. Please read more about what is generally accepted as notable.

If you think this page should not be deleted for this reason, you may contest the nomination by visiting the page and clicking the button labelled "Contest this speedy deletion". This will give you the opportunity to explain why you believe the page should not be deleted. However, be aware that once a page is tagged for speedy deletion, it may be removed without delay. Please do not remove the speedy deletion tag from the page yourself, but do not hesitate to add information in line with Wikipedia's policies and guidelines. If the page is deleted, and you wish to retrieve the deleted material for future reference or improvement, then please contact the deleting administrator. 213.205.251.138 (talk) 11:34, 6 November 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Please consider addressing the issues raised. Removing {{proposed deletion/dated files}} will stop the proposed deletion process, but other deletion processes exist. In particular, the speedy deletion process can result in deletion without discussion, and files for discussion allows discussion to reach consensus for deletion.

This bot DID NOT nominate any file(s) for deletion; please refer to the page history of each individual file for details. Thanks, FastilyBot (talk) 01:02, 15 January 2020 (UTC)[reply]
