Hello Spamlist![edit]

Ah, my first ever spam mass produced and mailed to the spamlist. Well first of all let me re-state that we have an irc channel, #wp-esperanza, and its been rather empty, so I'd appreciate it if you come, even if you just idle about. Now, the evil polls have closed, and I left a justification note for running the evil polls. Nothing has really changed, but at least I have somewhat of a consensus. I hope to figure out a way to overturn my power to JCarriker somehow, I'll figure out a way :-) Meanwhile, I've been busy reforming the mediation system where I am the chairman now, er, acting chairman. Enjoy your spam, with extra vikings. Redwolf24 (talk) 00:40, 1 October 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Roby, thank you for your support and your kind comment on my RfA! Robert 16:11, 1 October 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Hi there. You mentioned in the TfD debate for this template, you said you do the orphaning for it. Since its 7 days have now passed, and there was consensus to delete, I have archived the debate and moved the template to the 'To Oprhan' section on TfD. Someone may get to it before you do, but, if you should complete the orphaning, just move it to the "ready to delete" section and an admin will delete it. Thanks. -Splashtalk 17:14, 1 October 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for your message[edit]

Hi Roby, thanks for the little welcome note you left behind. I (my company) use(s) MediaWiki for logging our work, taking notes, official documentation, project planning, ... and so on. So yes, I am reasonably comfortable with Wikipedia, and I will sign my contributions wherever necessary/ wherever I'd like someone to check with me in case s/he has different opinions on something I wrote. :)

--Ksh.gupta 21:08, 1 October 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Someone wants to convert this to a template so it wound up at Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/List of California State Routes. (Same person who too the TFD off the {{VA Highways}}, and probably wanted to make a WP:POINT.)

Resignation[edit]

Hello spam list, look at this. Essjay is the new leader of Esperanza, and I'm interested in seeing how he runs it. I'm busy doing other work... Please comment at that talk page there. I will still probably run the spamlist though. Redwolf24 (talk) 22:59, 2 October 2005 (UTC)--Rschen7754 05:34, 2 October 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Advisory Committee election deadline set[edit]

Our new admin general, Essjay, has set the date for the advisory committee elections, that date being October 7th. By UTC it is October 5th right now. So see WP:ESP/E for voting in two days, and add yourself to the list if you're interested in running. On a personal note, I'm considering running, as I only resigned as admin general because of time. I'm sure I could help out on the advisory committee... Anywho, watchlist that page, and be sure to read the voting method too. Regards, Redwolf24 (talk) 01:11, 5 October 2005 (UTC)[reply]

WP:CP[edit]

Hi, you've reported copyright infringements to WP:CP in the last week, a new measure was recently passed to allow the speedy deltion of new pages that are cut and paste copyvios. Please follow these instructions if you come across this type of copyvio. Thanks. --nixie 00:11, 6 October 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Blatant copyright infringements may now be "speedied"

If an article and all its revisions are unquestionably copied from the website of a commercial content provider and there is no assertion of permission, ownership or fair use and none seems likely, and the article is less than 48 hours old, it may be speedily deleted. See CSD A8 for full conditions.

After notifying the uploading editor by using wording similar to:

{{nothanks-sd|pg=page name|url=url of source}} -- ~~~~

Blank the page and replace the text with

{{db-copyvio|url=url of source}}

to the article in question, leaving the content visible. An administrator will examine the article and decide whether to speedily delete it or not.

Charts[edit]

DROOOOOOOL!!! Wow. I mean REALLY wow! I love that page! One request; add an average edits line to the bottom graph. Such a line shows increase/decrease in activity averaged over time. What I'd like to see happen is to have this turn into a tool that I can pump someone's User ID into and have everything generated just like that page. Think you can make that happen? If so, my charts are history :) I wouldn't mind really; I enjoy doing them but I could spend the time I spend on them doing other things. I wonder about the load this might induce on Wikipedia? Thanks for the congrats on adminship! --Durin 16:41, 7 October 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Adminship[edit]

I'd like to nominate you to be an admin. I've reviewed your edits, and I'm very impressed with your contributions. Edit summaries a whopping 99% of the time (I found a few that were missing)? WOW! :) Plus, you've been active in a lot of dirty closets around here, including redirection repair (which from what I've seen is rare behavior). Your average # of edits per day is 24.15 according to my stats, not the 1.13 according to your pie chart. With 4000+ edits, you should sail through the RfA process for those people who insist on dwelling on edit counts, and I can't find any edits of yours where you used harsh words with any one. You need to be in the admin cabal ;) What do you say? --Durin 17:21, 7 October 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Also, would you mind if I make reference to User:RobyWayne/Sandbox in the RfA statement? --Durin 17:37, 7 October 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Nominated: I've gone ahead and created the RfA for you, effectively nominating you. If you want to remove the mention of the sandbox charts, just edit it out of my nomination statement. I'm out of time today and may not be available to do this again until Monday. If you want to reject the nomination, let me know and I will delete the RfA page. If you want to accept, then please follow the instructions located near the bottom of this page: Wikipedia:Requests_for_adminship/nominate. Make sure you follow the instructions precisely. RfA voters, including myself, do not look kindly upon people adding their RfAs improperly :) I've voted support pre-emptively for you. I don't normally vote prior to nominess answering the questions, but in this case since I'm the nominator... --Durin 21:07, 7 October 2005 (UTC)[reply]

  • My sympathies to you. I've had family members go through heart attacks. Once spent Christmas in an ICU ward. I know where you are emotionally. As I noted somewhere (can't remember where now), Wikipedia would be dropped as soon as you found out a family member was in the hospital. This is just such a time. Wikipedia is totally secondary. Be gone, go be with family. See you when you get back. I hope for the best for you and your family. --Durin 02:29, 8 October 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Voting for yourself[edit]

It doesn't matter if you're self-nominating - voting for yourself is pointless because RFA is for gauging users' feelings aobut you. Andre (talk) 22:03, 10 October 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Awesome user data[edit]

Just discovered (thanks to User:Durin directing me there) your user statistics thingo (in your sandbox). Just the tool I have been looking for, could I place an order? I was thinking of using a tool like that to log the number of "What links here" for a page (maybe on a monthly basis) to keep an eye on the pages at Maintenance. So where does the data come from (I don't know anything about server/MySQL/php)? Is it a server request, or does it acutally use "Special:Contributions/Foodude", like a normal user does? Anyhow, great work! Oh, and good luck with the VfA.--Commander Keane 14:12, 12 October 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Obviosuly I think the statistics are great. The doughnut chart labelling (of namespaces) turned out really ordered and clear, which is an improvement (or just luck maybe) on other peoples stats pages. The colours of the doughnut (hope you don't mind the British spellings) are also great now. Maybe something I'd add would be percentage of edit summaries (which I think you were working on). When you say that "the data comes directly from Special Contributions" what does that mean? For example, for my "What links here" counts (here) literally visits the page and reads the html, then checks the strings (which is really slow). --Commander Keane 01:35, 13 October 2005 (UTC)[reply]
I'm musn't be such a sucky programmer if I am using the same way as RobyWayne to get data from Wikipedia. So how does User:Kate get Kate's tool going so fast? He/she has special access to the server? --Commander Keane 01:56, 13 October 2005 (UTC)[reply]
My script for link repair takes more like half an hour, but I'm on dialup so the times you state don't mean much unless I know your connection speed. I was wondering about how your script would figure out which pages to count up, does it just run through the Maintenance page looking for entires after a "#" or something (maybe "Special:Whatlinkshere/foo")? I suppose the only useful statistics we can give for maintenance is the current totals, indicating which pages need attention, can you think of anything else? I was thinking about growth statistics, but that could be tricky because there is no way to check if a dab has been flushed out by an editor.--Commander Keane 05:38, 13 October 2005 (UTC)[reply]

KY highways[edit]

Thanks for the support. I should have looked at my KY map before I started hacking on KY 80, however! KY 80 still starts in Columbus, but stops in Mayfield before resuming in Calloway County. Eventually, a new four-lane 80 will run from Mayfield to near Murray. My latest edits reflect this. — Dale Arnett 06:00, 13 October 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Wikipedia:Disambiguation pages maintenance[edit]

It's increasingly seeming that scraping the data is not a viable solution and direct database access is the only answer. Maybe Kate could make a new tool where you type in an article title and it does a count. Disambig maintenance[edit]

User:Commander Keane thought you would be interested in this. Hope you are.  :-) --Russ Blau (talk) 16:59, 17 October 2005 (UTC)[reply]

  • 10-12 minutes, huh? Mine takes three hours to run on my WinXP box. It's written in the Python wikipediabot framework, so ease of use took priority over efficiency. And a fair portion of the time is waiting imposed by the bot framework. (Does your script read from the "live" wiki or from an .xml dump file?) Anyway, the part about providing totals at the end of the article should be easy enough to implement. Maintaining counts from one week to the next will be somewhat tougher (I guess I could hide them inside HTML comments), but I can see how it would be valuable. For example, a page that remains under 10 links for 4 consecutive weeks might be moved to "inactive" status. --Russ Blau (talk) 18:25, 17 October 2005 (UTC)[reply]

  • You've been promoted. I may raise a red flag about this pending some investigation. Pakaran seems to be counting neutral votes as oppose votes. I believe this is improper. I will need to do some investigation though to put the issue in order, and clarify why I feel this was improper. Regardless, User:UninvitedCompany promoted you. --Durin 15:22, 18 October 2005 (UTC)[reply]
    • I agree with your comments regarding neutral votes. Judging them as all oppose is a subjective exercise. RfAs are not strictly a voting, democratic process. They are attempts at gaining concensus. That said, Support/Oppose at >82% seems pretty clear to me. I've done some quick checking and found that since late June there have been 14 noms (not including yours) that had similar results to yours. 13 of them were promoted, and one was not (and their Support/Oppose was <80%). The one that was not was later promoted unaminously. I've placed a comment about this on the RfA talk page. --Durin 15:50, 18 October 2005 (UTC)[reply]

The vandalism page says 24 hours not 12. Why does it matter how long ago vandals were warned? Why are we being nice to this vandal? They have been warned, they persist, they should be blocked.

BTW, I'm not sure I know what you think my name means. It is, in fact, the name on my birth certificate. You might want to be careful with what you read into people's user names. I am not offended, but I could imagine that someone might be. I once lived on Gay Road. It is a coincidence that my sexual preference is hinted by my name, but as I have been happily "coupled" for the last 14 years, perhaps I should change my name to Haveman". -- Samuel Wantman 09:14, 20 October 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Sorry to disappoint you, but Daniel Kirkwood was a professor of mathematics at Indiana University in Bloomington, Indiana, not Indiana University at Indiana, Pennsylvania. Any idea what's going on with the Billy Staples page? I was inclined to revert to my last edit, but I'm reluctant since doing so would probably make me look like a jerk. Moved from top of page. I fixed the disambiguation of Linda B. Smith's link to Indiana University. The solution was to remove Indiana University of Pennsylvania from the list. drug dab bot[edit]

hi robywayne-

i noticed that the bot you've been running to fix all those links to the drug page automatically dab's "drug" to "medication". is there some way to change that? all the ones that turned up on my watchlist- 5-MeO-AMT, Alphamethyltryptamine, and Alexander Shulgin, maybe more- were much better suited by a link to psychoactive drug than medication. i'd imagine its the same for many other articles as well.

at any rate, i went and changed them, so i guess the bot was successful in a round about way. i spent some time a few days ago going through that list and fixing links, and there's a whole lot of links to that page. glad to see work being done on that.

thanks

--Heah (talk) 02:51, 2 November 2005 (UTC)[reply]

I don't think your dismabiguation is correct. The term here is probably "computing network" rather than "computing" and "network" separately.

The real problem is this is really a fan page with fairly sloppy terminology, and a tendency to stick double square brackets around every vaguely technical word without looking carefully at what that link leads to. Network isn't really about communication or mesh structures, but simply means many machines working towards the same goal. The sentence was essentially hyperbole.

Isn't that game fun? Just thought I'd pop by and say "hey" :-) When do you think it would be a good time to archive the talk page? --HappyCamper 01:14, 3 November 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Yes, this has happened before. I seem to remember someone de-linking the word in question (Wiktionary was sued a ocuple of time too), I can't find the discussion unforntunately. I support that. The problem, though, is that someone might re-link the word later.

Network itself isn't a good dab. It doesn't disambiguate but rather give a whole heap of things with "network" in the title - support network etc. It needs seeing to.

It's rarely a good idea to link to the dab. But if you do, use Network (disambiguation) and we can sort through them later.

You could always start a discussion at WP:DPL, you can get some great advice from there sometimes, probably much more proficient than my attempt.

Why do you run your bot under your username? --Commander Keane 06:59, 3 November 2005 (UTC)[reply]
You may find the need to run the bot automated (or with a flag), but maybe not. How did you bypass the security feature of pywikipedia where it checks to see if your bot name is listed on WP:BOTS?--Commander Keane 07:09, 3 November 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Please help me deal with this user[edit]

As an admin and a fellow member of the Counter Vandalism Unit, I was hoping you could give me some advice/help on dealing with an anonymous user. User:66.215.3.69 has been placing incorrect information on several related pages over the past week, and every time myself and other users revert this information, the anon comes back ~24 hours later to change it again. I have tried, and failed, to deal with the situation on the user's talk page. Is there anything we can do other than tolerate this user and continuously revert their edits? Thanks for your time and help. EWS23 | (Leave me a message!) 06:15, 3 November 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for your help and your compliment! I try my best, but I admittedly still feel like a newbie, and perhaps always will. There's so many policies and such to try and learn. You probably saw some of my comments on Disambiguation Link Repair, but perhaps also the Counter Vandalism Unit, Welcoming Committee, or some RfC that I've done recently. It's a pleasure to meet you as well! EWS23 | (Leave me a message!) 06:54, 3 November 2005 (UTC)[reply]

re: George W. Bush[edit]

Thanks for helping clean the vandalism up with that article!

No problem. As much as I don't like the guy, I like Wikivandalism even less :) --keepsleeping | say what 17:20, 4 November 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Keep up the Good Work[edit]

Apparently you're doing such a good job fighting vandals that even I'm getting your hate mail. I got the following message on my talk page from User:209.221.89.74 after you stopped him from vandalizing George W. Bush:

you little prick rob wayne you'l never stop me from outdating bushes portfolio but you can't you little dumbass and now i'm off to go do some more editing in the world war 2 page try to find them byeeeee

As long as we're making vandals mad, we must be doing a good job. :o) EWS23 | (Leave me a message!) 18:03, 4 November 2005 (UTC)[reply]

P.S.- Sure, no problem. In fact, he was such a big fan, he included you in his next edit. EWS23 | (Leave me a message!) 18:15, 4 November 2005 (UTC)[reply]

thanks for the chart[edit]

and well, sorry about not mentioning that much, I'm on an airport with limited net access but I wanted to let you know I appreciate the work and I?m interested to know if you get that webserver thing up. Thanks again! -- ( drini's vandalproof page ) 11:18, 6 November 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Lupin's popups[edit]

I know you use Lupin's popups to do lots of link repair - but to tell you the truth I don't know how it works exactly. At the moment I have disabled the feature on the popups (I don't like the badnwidth loss, and at the time I diabled it Wikipedia was slow, or slo(x10)w at some people were putting it). Anyhow, could you describe how it works exaclty. I seem to remember you find the link (which I assume you do using the Find tool in your browser), then hover over it and select to correct option form the bottom of the popup. This means you can only do one per article at a time - which is why I thought it was no good. To kill two birds with one stone, could you add your wisdom to the Guide, the page can definitely use your expertise. --Commander Keane 19:58, 7 November 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Category:Alleged relics of Jesus[edit]

Hi. You took part in the discussion over the renaming of this category when I nominated it for renaming on 14th September. I think that everyone agreed that it needed to be renamed, although there wasn't any agreement over what to rename it to. I've nominated it again and I'd be grateful if you could consider my new proposal to rename it, as you suggested at the time, to Relics attributed to Jesus. Thanks! --G Rutter 09:39, 24 November 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Sidhu, AOCE[edit]

You edited the AOCE page from:

This was certainly the case for Sidhu, who was well respected within Apple.

to:

This was proven in this case by Sidhu, who was disrespected within Apple.

Can you provide sources and details for this statement? It's certainly the first time I have heard it, and since it's the direct opposite of what I wrote, I will require further detail.

Maury 18:02, 24 November 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Hi, Maury! Thanks for your message. However, if you look at the diff of what I changed you'll notice that it was only to disambiguate network. I didn't make any context changes such as that which you noted. Please let me know if I can be of further assistance. Best regards, >: Roby Wayne Talk 19:09, 24 November 2005 (UTC)[reply]
My bad. I have contacted the author in question. Looks like graphiti.

Stats script suggestions[edit]

Excellent start! For my own interests I'd recommend a few minor additions:

  1. total edits, major edits (see below) and minor edits, as separate counters
  2. number of articles I started/created
  3. number of articles where the total change set was more than 30% of the page (ie, "major edits")
  4. number of characters written

The last two are an ongoing problem I have... I come across a stub or redirect and rewite the article, but this does not count as a "page create". Thus the statistics overcount for people who add commas, and undercount people who actually write articles.

A question to ponder: should re trust the "minor edit" flag at all?

How is your family?[edit]

Hey... I hadn't heard from you in a while and was wondering/hoping if your family's health problems had improved? --Durin 18:42, 29 November 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Kentucky State Highways WikiProject[edit]

Hey, Roby! I just wanted to ask if you wouldn't mind me making some Kentucky state highway shields for you. I'm talking like 1 through 100, for you to use for the articles. I can also do State Routes 1 through 10 since they're around my area. I actually live on route 5, so there's one I can do easily! Let me know, ok? Thanks! --FPAtl 13:01, 30 November 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Find-A-Grave links[edit]

User:UninvitedCompany has placed comments at WP:AN/I and at Wikipedia talk:Find-A-Grave famous people raising the question whether the links to findagrave.com be deleted from articles. You may want to participate in the discussion. -- DS1953 18:34, 6 December 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Kentucky Highways project[edit]

I've got the KY 5 article done. I'm going to go to work on the rest of 1 through 10 and maybe more. Go ahead and upload those sign images, ok? Thanks! -- FPAtl 01:07, 9 December 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Article on TACLANE(tm) Encryptor[edit]

You might want to append the article on the TACLANE ™ it is a trademark of General Dynamics® Corporation. According to G. D., TACLANE ™ does not stand for anything. Rumor has it that when the word TACLANE™ was used in military performance reports it was assumed to be an acronym. The individual writing the report used the available letters to come up with something, (TAC)tical (L)ocal (A)rea (N)etwork (E)ncryptor to satisfy the inquizitive supervisors. The NSA did the same thing by assuming a contraction of Tactical FASTLANE®. FASTLANE® is a registered trademark of the NSA. Someone at General Dynamics® came up with the name but the reasoning for its name remains a mystery.

Or

for more info or call them. I assume that it will depend on who you talk to at GDC4S Help Desk but the consensus is: That the name TACLANE ™ falls into that quagmire of knowledge we lovingly call the Internet.

Thanks for your time and have a great day
