Wow[edit]

I just heard your radio monologue on KPFA this morning, and i had no knowledge of this fascinating story until now. I added your project as an example of an extreme skunkworks project, and i think this article would benefit from additions of other notable projects. I remember the excitement around the calculator, when i bought a power pc for my mother, and then for myself. I now realize that i manned, solo, a skunkworks project at a former job, where i designed a searchable database for my companies distributed products, using a program that was not supposed to be installed at the company (filemaker pro), with no support from our programming dept, with no access to the manual, in between phone calls. My boss gave me support, but it was under the radar as well. When the main pc programmer found out, he was furious, stating we were migrating to foxpro, and that filemaker pro could not handle dbf files (i was using a txt file with limited data). i said "well, in that case, ill kill my baby", but then i found out, again without approval, that fmpro could handle such files, and that we had a file perfect for my idea on a drive on the network. mind you, i am NOT a programmer, and figured all this out on my own from scratch. of course, what i created was much more user friendly than what the pc programmer was creating with foxpro-no staff could understand or use his database, while mine could be used by order dept with about a half hour of training. It feels good, doesnt it?Mercurywoodrose (talk) 17:30, 24 July 2010 (UTC)[reply]
