Pluralism[edit]

Hi Ronald. Thank you for your edits on Pluralism. I'm not an expert in the field, but I'm just curious to know why you modified the references of the article and removed the reference to Karl Popper, who seems to be an important political philosopher to me. I would be glad if you could give some explanation on the talkpage of the article. (just out of curiosity) --Robin.rueth 19:55, 23 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Ruth,

While certainly one of the leading 20th century philosophers of science, Popper's political thought leaves a great deal to be desired. But regardless of one's judgement of its quality, the fact is that it does not play a significant role within debates around pluralism in contemporary political philosophy. As for my replacing William Galston with Bernard Williams, the latter's work is widely recgognized as far more philosophically sophisticated and, more relevant for the article, it has played a much more significant role in the establishment of pluralism as a moral and political philosophy. Moreover, Galston's belief that liberalism can be logically derived from pluralism assumes that the latter has something of a monist quality (for a true pluralism, given its recognition of deep-seated conflict, refuses to accept that doctrines are so coherent that one could ever derive anything logically from them).

I hope you found these thoughts helpful.Ronald11 19:44, 24 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Sorry, I didn't know I needed to leave an explanation.
