SOC 314: Wikipedia Critique an Article Assignment[edit]

In this article, it seems as though the role of women is overrepresented as opposed to the role of men. It seems as though the writer focused primarily on the gender roles of women in Afghanistan much more in depth than the amount of detail that they went into about mens gender roles. As a result, it is easy to assume that this article is bias because it's not taking into consideration men and women equally. For example, in the women section, the writer talked about the power of women and how they achieve it over time. Next, the writer continued to talk about how it's not necessarily a great thing to grow up as a woman in Afghanistan and all of the reasons why women are inferior in this country. Then, it went on to talk about women in the workforce and the attitudes of women and how they've changed over time. To reiterate the idea that this article over represents a particular sex, upon reading the mens section, it was a few sentences as opposed to the multiple paragraphs that the women received. The under representation of mens gender roles in Afghanistan doesn't exactly give a clear depiction of what it's like to be a man in Afghanistan. To resolve this issue, the writer should use other sources, rather than one, to find more gender roles of men in Afghanistan because clearly their source was more linked to the roles of women. I understand that males have more power in Afghanistan than women, however, I think there should be more of an explanation as to why it is this way. Maybe a source should be included that explains the history of Afghanistan and the religious beliefs that affect the way each gender is portrayed/treated. The overrepresented aspect of this article about women makes it hard to truly get a grasp about what a man's gender roles in society in Afghanistan consist of because they were under represented.
