I've been told I've done three months of socking. I don't understand what the complaint is. I have simply been trying to improve wikipedia by adding material to entries. I share a home router so there will be other users on this IP address. Occasionally I may forget to log in before making a change.

Aspley Guise

Thank you for your edit to Aspley Guise. Unfortunately it is too much of a wp:primary source and (since most of us can't read Middle English) we have only your word for it that it says what you say it says. As I'm sure it does! I hope you don't mind but I've moved your citation down to external links and replaced it with another ref to the Victoria History, which gives the de Guise family connection with citations and so better meets Wikipedia standards.

Wikipedia aside, I am fascinated by the document you linked, as I am sure other readers will be too. Is there a fuller transcription/translation anywhere? Ok, I give in!

Thank you for your edit to Stantonbury. Try as hard as I may, I'm afraid that Chancery Hand (sic?) is just too impenetrable and I can't manage to find "Stonton Barry" anywhere in http://aalt.law.uh.edu/AALT1/H6/CP40no654/aCP40no654fronts/IMG_0324.htm. Worse still, I can't even decipher "Norht" (Northamptonshire) in the county margin. I don't expect you to hand it to me on a plate but if you would say which of the ten county items is the relevant one, I should be very grateful. 𝕁𝕄𝔽 (talk) 20:45, 31 October 2023 (UTC)

it also occurs on image 325 - and thus fewer squiggles to look at before you get to the correct entry. [ there is overlap of images, to ensure that all entries are photographed. ]

On image 325, at the top left hand side, you see "ht" which is the last 2 letters for the abbreviation of the county of Northamptonshire; The next entry has "Salop" in the margin; ignore; the next one has "Notht" for Northamptonshire; (with "Bed" for Bedfordshire part way down that entry; Ignore. The next entry has "Norht" as the county margin. That is the one you are interested in; the Plaintiff appears after the sign (SS) [marking a new entry] followed by John [Joh'es] abbot of the monastery of St James by Northampton [ Joh'es abbas monstr'ij S'ti Jacobi iuxta Norhampton ]. I t is in very abbreviated Latin, for example John appears as "Johes", but with a horizontal line thru' the letter "h", indicating an abbreviated form of the name. I reckon that it is Stantonbury on the next line, the 5th and 6th words, as "Stonton Barry", where the capital B does not look like a B, until you get used to it. Further along on the same second line is the county abbreviation for Buckinghamshire, appearing as "Buk", with the same "squiggle" for the capital B. John the abbot is complaining that the vicar of S...bury owes him £20, appearing as "viginti libras", at the end of line 2. Good luck, hope this helps. Phew! Totally led by the hand and given a good landmark (Northampton), I've actually managed to find it on p.325! The capital S is barely recognisable but can be contrasted with the opening lower-case ⟨s⟩ three words to the left ("scotio"?). The B is a very long way from its modern equivalent and the ⟨r⟩ (in Berry) is very reminiscent of the insular r, ⟨ꞃ⟩ (easier to see at Gaelic type#Samples, though I suspect you are already familiar with it) but with very long descenders. Stantonbury Campus theatre. (Afaik, the Theatre and leisure centre are at least nominally independent of the school that shares the Campus.)

Out of curiosity, how long did it take you to learn to read Chancery Hand (sic?) reasonably fluently? Did you approach it gradually by reading manuscripts from ever receding centuries?
