June 2022[edit]

Information icon Hello and welcome to Wikipedia. When you add content to talk pages and Wikipedia pages that have open discussion (but never when editing articles), please be sure to sign your posts. There are two ways to do this. Either:

  1. Add four tildes ( ~~~~ ) at the end of your comment, or
  2. With the cursor positioned at the end of your comment, click on the signature button located above the edit window.

This will automatically insert a signature with your username or IP address and the time you posted the comment. This information is necessary to allow other editors to easily see who wrote what and when.

Thank you. 331dot (talk) 08:11, 2 June 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Hello Ruby Stillman. The nature of your edits gives the impression you have an undisclosed financial stake in promoting a topic, but you have not complied with Wikipedia's mandatory paid editing disclosure requirements. Paid advocacy is a category of conflict of interest (COI) editing that involves being compensated by a person, group, company or organization to use Wikipedia to promote their interests. Undisclosed paid advocacy is prohibited by our policies on neutral point of view and what Wikipedia is not, and is an especially serious type of COI; the Wikimedia Foundation regards it as a "black hat" practice akin to black-hat search-engine optimization.

Paid advocates are very strongly discouraged from direct article editing, and should instead propose changes on the talk page of the article in question if an article exists. If the article does not exist, paid advocates are extremely strongly discouraged from attempting to write an article at all. At best, any proposed article creation should be submitted through the articles for creation process, rather than directly.

Regardless, if you are receiving or expect to receive compensation for your edits, broadly construed, you are required by the Wikimedia Terms of Use to disclose your employer, client and affiliation. You can post such a mandatory disclosure to your user page at User:Ruby Stillman. The template {{Paid}} can be used for this purpose – e.g. in the form: {{paid|user=Ruby Stillman|employer=InsertName|client=InsertName}}. If I am mistaken – you are not being directly or indirectly compensated for your edits – please state that in response to this message. Otherwise, please provide the required disclosure. In either case, do not edit further until you answer this message. 331dot (talk) 08:12, 2 June 2022 (UTC)[reply]

As previously advised, your edits give the impression you have a financial stake in promoting a topic, but you have not complied with Wikipedia's mandatory paid editing disclosure requirements. You were asked to cease editing until you responded by either stating that you are not being directly or indirectly compensated for your edits, or by complying with the mandatory requirements under the Wikimedia Terms of Use that you disclose your employer, client and affiliation. Again, you can post such a disclosure on your user page at User:Ruby Stillman, and the template {{Paid}} can be used for this purpose – e.g. in the form: {{paid|user=Ruby Stillman|employer=InsertName|client=InsertName}}. Please respond before making any other edits to Wikipedia. Theroadislong (talk) 09:19, 12 June 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Hi, thanks for your help. I am NOT being compensated for my edits. I will change it to have a more neutral point of view, but the sources I used are independent, reliable, published sources, so I do not understand why those caused an issue. Ruby Stillman (talk) 10:33, 19 June 2022 (UTC)[reply]
What is your association with the school, or how did you come to edit about it? 331dot (talk) 10:42, 19 June 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Good question- My family friend goes to the school, and I am interested in the sustainability aspect of the school. Ruby Stillman (talk) 11:37, 19 June 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Okay. In looking at the sources in the draft, they seem to mostly be interviews with staff or students or both. At least one doesn't mention the school at all and just seems to document the existence of a program offered at the school. An article is not just for telling about the subject and the things it does- an article about an organization must summarize what independent reliable sources with significant coverage have chosen on their own to say about the organization, showing how it meets the special Wikipedia definition of a notable organization. Interviews are a primary source and do not establish notability. Wikipedia is interested in what others say about the school, not what it (or people associated with it) says about itself. If you have sources that took note of unique programs at the school(like a sustainability initiative), any article about it should primarily summarize what those sources chose to say about it, without prompting by or involvement from the school itself. 331dot (talk) 11:59, 19 June 2022 (UTC)[reply]
