List of basic linguistic topics[edit]

Doing good work there :) It'll give people a good start, and provide a list of articles that need to be improved. A few of them are just stubs. - FrancisTyers 13:08, 24 December 2005 (UTC)[reply]

cognates[edit]

What is the difference between a false cognate and a false friend?--Rockero 21:33, 28 January 2006 (UTC)[reply]

The terms are frequently confused for each other. In the strictest sense, cognates are words in different languages that come from the same ancestral root. False cognates are words which look like they are cognates, but are not.
False friends are words in different languages that look very similar (and may be either real cognates or false cognates), but mean very different things. False friends are a common source of errors for people learning a second language. Sacundim 21:54, 28 January 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Transportación[edit]

Yes, I know. It is a "pseudoanglicism"[1]. The term is accepted by DRAE but it has been in disuse for two or three centuries. My point was that it did not become common again till around 20-30 years ago, due to contact with English. See --Asterion 17:57, 18 April 2006 (UTC)[reply]

WPTL todo[edit]

I recently constructed an attempt at a more organized WikiProject Theoretical Linguistics open tasks template, but I haven't received any responses on the project talk page. If you could take a look at the test: User:Mitchoyoshitaka/WPTL todo and comment on it, I'd greatly appreciate any feedback or criticism! mitcho/芳貴 02:41, 5 May 2007 (UTC)[reply]

English Spelling Reform[edit]

I think somebody needs to rewrite the article. It does not present a balanced view of modern spelling reform efforts. I believe readers will have wasted their time reading both Spelling Reform articles. And since Wiki has such a big web presence, its bogarting the subject from the legitimate reform websites.JO 753 18:31, 13 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]

WikiProject Theoretical Linguistics[edit]

Hello, I am trying to bring WP:WikiProject Theoretical Linguistics back to semi-active status. Toward that end, I have moved all members who have not posted to the project page in the past six months to a section, "Inactive members." If you wish to be active in the project, I hope you will move your name back to the section, "Members." You may also remove your name if you are no longer interested in the project. Thanks, and happy editing, Cnilep (talk) 17:31, 19 June 2010 (UTC)[reply]
