Your recent edit to Patna

Hi, I wonder if you could suggest what we can do about the situation on the above article regarding deadlinks. I note that in your recent edit you have agreed with me that a link was dead ... but apparently it is not dead for people viewing the site from within India. I am aware that India block access to some non-Indian sites but am struggling to work out why (if?) they are blocking access to their own government sites, as appears to be the case with the link which I tagged as dead and with which comment your recent edit summary agreed.

The Wayback etc archives do not cover this stuff particularly well, which suggests that the issue has existed for some time. I've tried emailing the relevant Indian govt department and have also brought it up on the article talk page. Frankly, even allowing for WP:AGF, this presents something of a problem in my opinion, not least because it is not uncommon for official Indian sources to use WP as the basis for their published knowledge, thus creating a circular reference that no-one outside India can validate! I'm wondering whether to take this to the reliable sources noticeboard but your general thoughts would be appreciated. - Sitush (talk) 01:10, 6 March 2011 (UTC)

Well, I was just putting the ref back in to take the page off of Category:Pages with broken reference names, never even thought to check the link ... so I did check the one link and figured out how to update it. I looked at a couple of the others going to the same site and couldn't find the new locations. It would appear the site http://patna.bih.nic.in has been redesigned, that's probably most of the problem. - Salamurai (talk) 03:20, 6 March 2011 (UTC)
That's fine. thanks. I was sifting through that category only a couple weeks back and cleared up maybe 50 articles. Never ending! -Sitush (talk) 07:55, 6 March 2011 (UTC)
Update: I've just received an email from NIC, the Indian body that looks after official govt websites etc. Apparently there was an unintentional block placed on them and it has been there for some time. They removed it a couple of days ago. So, although the sites have been redesigned it would seem that I was not totally doolally when I said that the things (as opposed to specific pages) were totally inaccessible outside India. I'd wager someone got into trouble over that! - Sitush (talk) 09:42, 6 March 2011 (UTC)
Ha! crazy. explains a lot, tho.
last summer it seemed like I was the only one working on the broken refs, I had the list down to 2-3 that can't be fixed, then couldn't touch it for a while ... now it's almost 400. yeep. - Salamurai (talk) 17:00, 6 March 2011 (UTC)

Hey Salamurai -- thanks for your help tidying up the references in this article. Unfortunately, they came at a bad time! All the citations to Melton come from a single editor who's very inexperienced with citing his sources and hasn't provided page numbers for any of the claims he cites to Melton. I'm working with him to get those page numbers in there, but compacting the references down right now is only going to confuse him more. I've temporarily split these apart again so that he can get the pages in there, after which I'll show him how to compact them again! cheers --Rlandmann (talk) 11:54, 6 May 2011 (UTC)

Taxonomy templates

Hi there, I saw your edit summary indicating confusion as to why a taxonomy template wouldn't update correctly. Following an edit to one of these templates, it helps to perform a null edit. You can do this by either clicking the "category listings out of date?" link or by clicking Edit and Save Page without making any changes. Bob the WikipediaN (talkcontribs) 20:09, 13 June 2011 (UTC)

Your Undoing of my edits for the Georgetown Qatar Page

Kindly note that all the info is found on the Georgetown Official Website. I am a former student updating the page of my alma mater. Torture in Bahrain

Can you tell me when you've finished your edits as I have just had a big edit conflict while I was trying to move some of the excessively detailed content of the introduction. I'm happy to wait until you've finished, but perhaps you wouldn't mind having a quick check afterwards that my eddits haven't disrupted anything you've been doing. Thanks. Opbeith (talk) 22:08, 19 June 2011 (UTC)

Apologies. We were conflicting earlier, so I went away to leave you to it, but there hadn't been a change in an hour when I went back, had assumed you were done, so made my last fix to the refs. - Salamurai (talk) 00:25, 20 June 2011 (UTC)
No problem, these things happen, inevitably. I'm grateful to you fixing the references. I could see something was wrong but couldn't work out what the problem was, so thought I'd try and finish with the text stuff and then tackle that, but I'm very grateful you took that off my hands. I'm quite tired after a bad night so probably won't attempt my next bout of reorganisation until tonight, but I'd be very grateful if you'd have a look afterwards to see if my efforts have left any mess behind them. Thanks! Opbeith (talk) 08:20, 20 June 2011 (UTC)
Okay, I'll make a mental note to stop in and check it out tomorrow! - Salamurai (talk) 17:54, 20 June 2011 (UTC)
Appreciated, but probably best if I send you a message when done - I've just got tangled up with other things this evening. Thanks. Opbeith (talk) 22:02, 20 June 2011 (UTC)
Slow as usual, but I finally got there. I've done the first stage of reorganising and moved some of the introduction into the body of the article. There's additional specific information that can be moved out of the intro as well but I'll leave that for a second helping another time. So I'd be grateful if you could cast a brief eye and check that I haven't caused damage to the references with my tinkering. Thanks! Opbeith (talk) 23:45, 24 June 2011 (UTC)
I checked and didn't see anything that was broken. I deleted a blank line, is all. I'm finding less time to edit right now as well, hopefully I will have a chance to clean up the appearance of the refs in the next month or so (if no one else does). - Salamurai (talk) 02:16, 26 June 2011 (UTC)
Thanks a lot, that's reassuring. I'm not a very good reader of bulk text and format code. If you're short of time at the moment don't feel the need to do anything cosmetic just at the moment. Given the ongoing situation, myself and the other editor who has been active recently are, sadly, likely to be making more changes for a while yet. Thanks for your help. Revised Notes from Floreale

Hello, you contacted me on August 16th regarding the changes I made to the When In Rome trademark dispute. The reason I amended the page was because wiruk added information that has already beed referenced ie. 9,10 and 11. There is no dispute over the bands name for touring as this has been resolved. The UK version are touring as Clive Farrington and Andrew Mann formerly of When In Rome. This is clearly stated in reference 9 and wiruk is aware of this. The user wiruk is Rob Juarez and he is using Wikipedia to elevate his importance in the band. He is a touring member of the band and is not an original member.Musicwerks (talk) 06:31, 16 August 2011 (UTC)

As I stated to you, I added the information. If the name dispute has been resolved, please provide a source. The Pollstar ref (presently #9) indicates Floreale and Juarez are still in dispute; however, that article is a few months old, and I was not able to find newer information. I see from your contribution history that you claim to be a founding member of the band; I urge you to read the guidelines at Wikipedia:Autobiography, with regard to editing articles that concern yourself. Thank you. - Salamurai (talk) 10:48, 16 August 2011 (UTC)
Thanks for your help. I'm not very Wikipedia savvy and cannot work out how to add reference sources. The link that would confirm the name change dispute in the US is http://www.houseofblues.com/tickets/eventdetail.php?eventid=68818 but I don't know how to reference this on the page. Can you help ?Thanks again Musicwerks (talk) 14:27, 16 August 2011 (UTC)
That's not a news source, it's a concert sales page, which doesn't meet source criteria as I understand it. I do see that it lists "Clive Farrington and Andrew Mann - formerly of When In Rome" which the Pollstar article notes F/M has to use, but that doesn't confirm the dispute is legally resolved. - Salamurai (talk) 16:55, 16 August 2011 (UTC)
September 30th, 2011
Can you please moderate the page. You will see that the bands history is being continually recreated without verifiable references and it is being used to promote the When In Rome UK version. I am an original member of the band, My professional name is Michael Floreale (Musicwerks). My given name is Michael Nuttall but this name has never been used professionally nor is it even mentioned in any referenced material on the page and is just another example of ex member vandalism. I have tried to uphold the principles of Wikipedia by maintaining the bands history with the truth through verifiable sources but as you can see WIRUK and THEWIR are intent on changing facts. They are not respecting the values that Wikipedia expect from it's contributors Musicwerks (talk) 16:28, 30 September 2011 (UTC)
October 02nd, 2011
I acknowledge your notice to me regarding the continuous changes being made to the page. I am trying to maintain factual input and respect the Wikipedia values, however, as you can see that since your notice to me, Farrington and Mann, WIRUK has continued to alter your contributions. I have reverted the page back to your last edits but WIRUK has, and will continue to revert back to their version which is not a true and verifiable version but mischief making and self serving Musicwerks (talk) 21:47, 2 October 2011 (UTC)
That's called edit warring. I stopped making changes because of it. This is obviously becoming a problem and I do not wish to become involved. I suggest using Template:Help or Template:Admin help (follow the instructions at the links) to see about help from someone with more authority and/or about getting the page protected (see WP:SEMI). There are a lot of policies that affect this sort of thing, I am not conversant with them all, I don't think I can help anymore. Sorry for the problems you are experiencing, hopefully you can get the assistance needed. - Salamurai (talk) 21:59, 2 October 2011 (UTC)

When In Rome dispute notes from Farrington & Mann

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5HI_xFQWiYU&ob=av2e You will see in the above link that Clive Farrington and Andrew Mann are the original writer / founder / vocalists for When In Rome. Why was the When In Rome band site not blocked from editing on the truth page that I edited last? It is so ridiculous that an ex member of the band has trademarked the name in order to prevent us from working with a name that we created and founded? However, this trademark is for live purposes only. If we cannot see that I, Clive Farrington is telling the truth, then can I please ask that the false site is taken down completely? This is the only resolve in this very unfair situation. Why would any band for instance list past members? That is the most ridiculous thing I've ever heard of unless you are Whitesnake or AC/DC! Because the information in the edit that Wiki has decided to protect is for the most part false, can we please ask for the whole page to be removed? M. Nuttall has been selling his none original version of WIR to the ticket buying public as the original act which we find implorable! Please be assured that we are grown up people and have absolutely no reason to tell anything but the truth... Thank you and please look at the info that's already out there. Many fans are so disappointed that they paid money to see the M. Floreale non original version and in essence were duped... Please be aware that Rob Juarez has nothing to do with the edits, because even he wasn't there in my parents garden shed when we wrote The Promise (all verifiable facts) - Clive Farrington and Andrew Mann - When In Rome — Preceding unsigned comment added by 89.242.211.182 (talkcontribs) 15:54, October 4, 2011 (UTC)

A) re: trademark: The Pollstar article says "Floreale moved to the States, where in 2006 he put together a new band, also called When In Rome, and trademarked the name for use in the U.S." If that is inaccurate, you should be talking to Pollstar for a retraction or correction, which can then be incorporated.
B) re: accuracy: When I was asked by some anonymous editor to check on the page in a previous edit war, I personally researched and checked the information in the article, it's all in the references, and as correct as possible from available sources. If you want to dispute the truth of the sources, please check them and comment on the article's talk page. If you want it rewritten, that's another thing. How it is written is based on reading the articles in the sources, some of which is band member commentary (which yourself has been involved in) and while I always try to be neutral, using biases info may make it incorrect or inaccurate. Discuss it on the talk page - since it's a page about you, you really shouldn't be editing it.
C) re: past members: It's an encyclopedia, not a place to advertise yourself. Band pages reflect history, as well as current events, which is why bands that have changed lineups usually have listings of past members. See The Temptations or Green Day or The Damned (band) (which doesn't list ex members in the infobox, they are further down the article) or Duran Duran - or another one-hit wonder like yourselves, Right Said Fred. The Beatles article lists their past members.
D) Re: being out of the music biz: That's based on the following statement by Andrew Mann in information submitted by Clive Farrington at this website (which is cited in the article).

Andrew: “Apart from When in Rome we’ve both been getting on with our lives outside of songwriting. Clive has a 9 year old daughter, Saskia, so he’s been busy! I’ve been doing some acting and I am director of a casting agency in London – It was inevitable that we would again be talking of studios & touring with When in Rome”

So if you want to dispute your own statements feel free. If it's been misconstrued, that's another thing; however, see next note.
E) re: asking me to make changes or delete the article: I am no longer getting involved in your edit war/dispute over the encyclopedia article about yourselves, which you shouldn't even be editing in the first place. If you still have issues about the article, please contact an administrator via your talk page (make sure to be logged in this time), see Template:Admin help. I will not be making ANY changes to When in Rome (band) in the future, I have removed it from my watchlist.
Thank you for your time, I look forward to not hearing any more about your dispute or your band(s) in the future. - Salamurai (talk) 00:37, 5 October 2011 (UTC)

placing stub tags

Please put {{stub}} tags at the end of article, after everything except inter-wiki links, as per WP:FOOTERS, not as you did in A. A. Bondy. It saves time for stub-sorters if it's in the right place. Thanks. PamD 09:03, 8 November 2011 (UTC)

Track listing template

Confused by your revert that the Tracklisting template [on Reckoning (R.E.M. album), see edit of today] "smashes" the text - using the template, the text is the same height and width, and makes the tracklist only slightly longer than before (compare old & new in separate tabs). IMO the template "airs out" the list, making it easier to read. - Salamurai (talk) 07:39, 8 November 2011 (UTC) Columns The track listing template (which you added to Reckoning (R.E.M. album)) has columns of pre-defined width so that long titles will be smashed together to the left--that's why I never use it. If an article has had it for awhile, then I don't take it out, but if an article has gone without it for awhile, I prefer to not add it for that reason. It also doesn't wrap with {{Infobox album}}, so when an article on an album is short, then it ends up having a huge whitespace where it clears the bottom of that template but still doesn't actually extend any wider. —Justin (koavf)TCM☯ 15:47, 8 November 2011 (UTC)

The Infobox wrap problem you described doesn't occur, however; I checked a few of the shorter articles with that template and narrowed the browser window - the table stays a set width % of the space. I've seen that happen with wikitable setups, however. And the particular article doesn't have long titles that are being smashed.
Effectively you're telling me you don't like and don't use it. That doesn't make it wrong for others to use it for a cleaner presentation. -Salamurai (talk) 17:04, 8 November 2011 (UTC)
True I don't like it and I don't use it, but I also leave it when I find it and I don't add it to articles that don't have it. E.g. Illinois (album) is an article that I helped bring to FA status with another editor and that's one where it really shouldn't be, since it has excessively long title names, but I let sleeping dogs lie. There is nothing mandating conversion to the track listing template and so when it's not required, the policy is to leave it as is if there is a long-term stable version of the article. —Justin (koavf)TCM☯ 17:09, 8 November 2011 (UTC)
Where is the specific policy on using the table? I have searched, and read about half the archive of the template's talk page, and haven't been able to find it, for months now. Can you direct me? I mean, it's not "required" anywhere, is it? Just a different presentation. - Salamurai (talk) 17:23, 8 November 2011 (UTC)
Usage See Wikipedia:WikiProject_Albums/Article_body#Track_listing. —Justin (koavf)TCM☯ 17:39, 8 November 2011 (UTC)

Superhero showdown - Marvel Legends Showdown checklist deletion

PLEASE don't delete this. I don't understand why you would feel the need to remove information about a topic. Leave that information in-tact. There are few places to find that type of information.— Preceding unsigned comment added by 165.189.145.89 (talkcontribs) 17:38, November 18, 2011 (UTC)

It's an encyclopedia, not a fansite or collector's guide. I put a note on the article's talk page about it, no one responded, so I removed the list. There's no source for it, the game is out of print and the company closed. If your only reason to include is "it's not available anywhere else" than it's not verifiable information and it doesn't belong. - Salamurai (talk) 01:15, 19 November 2011 (UTC)

My understanding of an encyclopedia is that it is a source of information. Why do you want to limit the amount of information available? I was not aware that you had put a note on the article's talk page or I would have responded. I think you should consider that within a few days of your edit that I noticed and had wanted that information. I knew that it was there previously and found the edit history. Wouldn't you then say perhaps that there is interest in this information? As for the source - the game itself would be the source. Some fans either combined resources to gather information about the release or some fortunate person with all the figures and cards entered it.‎ — Preceding unsigned comment added by 24.159.244.27 (talkcontribs) 11:17, November 20, 2011

The Voice Cast Vandal

Hello, Salamurai! I wanted to make you aware of something, as I see that you have edited at least one article that our "mutual friend" has. I'm speaking of this edit, that I found while reverting the recent edits of an IP used by a prolific pest dubbed "The Voice Cast Vandal". That section you reverted was created by him, and many of the actors listed are favorite targets of his. He switches IPs constantly and targets a lot of different actors and actresses, but the behavior remains the same. If you encounter similar edits concerning fake cast lists on articles like this, don't hesitate to drop me a line on my talk page! Cheers :> Doc talk 08:09, 24 April 2012 (UTC)

Your changes caused the article to appear on the list Category:Pages with incorrect ref formatting which I was working on at the time. The article Supported living specifically states that it refers to a term used in the United Kingdom. It appears that your changes discussed US conditions without noting anything about why they would be in article or differentiating about UK/US. Since you are saying you may have included or discussed works by yourself on the page, I refer you to this policy: Wikipedia:Plain and simple conflict of interest guide (more detailed: Wikipedia:Conflict of interest). Please keep in mind anyone can edit anything on Wikipedia for any reason and also have those changes reverted or removed.
Also, if you have messages for editors they should be placed on the Talk page, not the user's page. Thanks. - Salamurai (talk) 17:28, 11 May 2012 (UTC)

Hi;

Thank you for improving some references I recently made. I will study your edit so I can do a better job in the future. Jim Derby (talk) 18:39, 6 January 2013 (UTC)

The edits reverted by 107.4.229.24 were made public by the FCC, DCRTV.com (a Washington, DC area media website) and VARTV.com (a state-wide media website in Virginia). I expect by Monday, Inside Radio and other national radio business websites will pick it up. But the FCC is the official website for these things and if you can read it, they give information first. They are recognized as a reliable source as they are part of the US Government. Just some FYI there.

That aside, good work on revert the anon. I am going to track down an admin to see about having them blocked for edit warring. Don't worry, that won't effect you since you were reverting vandalism. :) - NeutralhomerTalk • 00:23, 10 February 2013 (UTC)

I assumed that they must have been in the news for there to be citations or to have the sale info added at all, and presumed the anon was an employee trying to cover up. IME most anons can't be bothered to actually say what their problem is, but since they gave a reason, there ya go. I was just trying to clear up reference errors. Thanks for the compliment! Hi Salamurai, I'm right in the middle of clearing up the bibliography and removing redundant cite book and other entries. Could you hold off a bit to make any other corrections so we don't have edit conflicts? -- Gwillhickers (talk) 04:10, 11 February 2013 (UTC)

Fine. You weren't apparently working on the article when I started (after fixing ref code error). To prevent edit conflicts when engaged in a large edit, you should use the Template:In use at the top of the article to warn other editors. Please note, if you combine the refs with the SFN code as I did, it would be simpler than the "#author|author" code you're using, will automatically combine in the cites without having to use ref names, and be consistent with other articles. - Salamurai (talk) 04:29, 11 February 2013 (UTC)

Question for you

First of all, thank you so much for streamlining the references on Genie; wiki-syntax and me don't get along very well, to put it mildly. I was wondering; do you have any way of getting them to work like they do on (for instance) Olivia Manning? If you click the book refs on that page, they take you down to the book being cited, and that doesn't seem to be happening on the Genie article. I don't dare screw with the formatting right now, and besides I'd rather spend the time touching up the last few content issues. If you can help, it'd be hugely appreciated, and if not it's really not a huge deal. The Blade of the Northern Lights (話して下さい) 20:50, 11 February 2013 (UTC)

You're welcome! The Havard-style ref code takes getting used to (and there are several variations). The book links in Genie's refs work like in Olivia Manning for me, except for Curtiss 1988, which I've now fixed. It may be difficult to tell that the correct book line is being highlighted; on some articles it's obvious that you're being moved to the book section but on others not so much. (I hope this makes sense.) To make it work, the citation code must have the author's names listed separately (|last= Curtiss |first=Susan) and list the year. In some cite codes you need to include other things to make them work. You can read up on template:sfn if you want to learn more. - Salamurai (talk) 23:45, 11 February 2013 (UTC)
Ah; it would just be my luck that I tried Curtiss 1988 earlier and didn't check the others. IRL I'm used to putting together bibliographies without having to worry about templates and parameters, so this is an... experience. Many thanks again. Hi, I need your help. -- Genre problems

Hi, sorry for interrupting, I just want to know about the genre problems of two pages: "So What" and "Sober", both are Pink songs. So please resolve.

"So What" is actually a pop rock, pop punk and power pop song, not dance-pop. I don't think it contains dance music influences on it.

"Sober" is actually a pop rock (primary genre) and alternative rock (secondary genre). But it shuffled to alternative rock and pop rock. I think would change back into pop rock and alternative rock, because pop rock is the primary genre, and alternative rock is the secondary genre. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Lordofpyrus (talkcontribs) 14:06, 13 February 2013 (UTC)

okay. I don't know why you picked me to look into this, genre is not my strong suit and I haven't even listened to this album in over two years (tho I have heard it). I looked at the cites in "So What" for genre and the ones included don't say anything about dance pop, so I removed that in the text (tho I didn't change the infobox). I found "dance pop" tagged for this song on AllMusic and RateYourMusic.com. I suppose "Dance" because of the synth beat. I haven't looked at "Sober" yet, I don't have time right now. - Salamurai (talk) 15:02, 13 February 2013 (UTC)

(for Slater & Gordon)

Hi Kelvin! Thanks for the Barnstars!
On reviewing the section where the picture of Hugh Gordon would go, I personally don't think the photo of Gordon is appropriate to the article about the law firm. If you still want to add it, please refer to Wikipedia:Picture tutorial for instructions on how to do it. This also helped me to realise what the links you added were about (as I hadn't thought to actually look at them ...); I moved a couple to the Gordon info, but the rest seem superfluous.
For help on inline citations, as you mentioned in your earlier Barnstar post, go here: Wikipedia:Inline citation. I hope this helps! I am also adding the welcome message to your talk page which has other links that may help you. Have a good day and happy editing! - Salamurai (talk) 15:07, 14 February 2013 (UTC)

Thanks for diving in and helping on this one. I still don't understand why there is any need for this lawsuit stuff to be in the article at all. The opening sentence of that section says "There is no dispute about Princeton's south boundary...". Well if there is no dispute, why do we need a lengthy paragraph dealing with a lawsuit that is over and done with? I just don't get it. Thanks.--ukexpat (talk) 01:41, 15 February 2013 (UTC)

I tinkered with some of the text on the page. Took out some redirects (so they would direct to the actual town, not the redirect), updated a couple references (the links weren't working right), blockquoted the court judgement, fixed some WikiLinks, removed a couple linkfarm links, and fixed some other things. Let me know if you need any help with the page, I have some experience in town pages. - NeutralhomerTalk • 02:48, 15 February 2013 (UTC)
I still think it looks weird having the Geography section start with "There is no dispute...". My initial reaction to that is "OK good, so why do we need the rest of the lawsuit stuff". Maybe the section should start with something like "Until June 30 there had been a dispute about Princeton's south boundary..." and take it from there?--ukexpat (talk) 05:32, 15 February 2013 (UTC)

Question for administrator

On Category:Pages with incorrect ref formatting, in the past any article marked with "Wikipedia:" never appeared, now there are scads of them. I edited about a dozen, not really thinking about it, but most of them are archives and shouldn't be modified even to remove from the tracking category. Frankly none of these articles ought to be showing up in the Incorrect Ref category in the first place. I expect there was a software update that makes them show up, can something be done to prevent their appearance? Who does that get directed to? Thanks.

--Salamurai (talk) 05:13, 7 March 2014 (UTC)

  • You actually don't need an administrator specifically. The perseon that I know that know a lot about citations and the modules and templates that create those errors is Trappist the monk. Perhaps they can help you here. — {{U|Technical 13}} (tec) 14:01, 7 March 2014 (UTC)
If I understand it correctly, the pages listed in Category:Pages with incorrect ref formatting are added to the category by the MediaWiki extension Cite.php. Perhaps the best place to address your question is there.

I think this edit by Gadget850 may be relevant. Asking your question at Template_talk:Broken_ref may actually work better than Cite.php. – Jonesey95 (talk) 15:44, 7 March 2014 (UTC)

Regarding your move request of == Reiulf Ramstad Arkitekter == on WP:RMTR

Just wanted to let you know that I fixed the appearance of your request so that an administrator can handle the request properly. Amazing how equals signs can break a template like that. Steel1943 (talk) 03:33, 6 April 2014 (UTC)
