Projects

I've enjoyed Wikipedia as a non-registered user for quite a while, but have decided to get involved in some of the Wiki projects. I've started with the Dead External Links project and have already spent a good bit of time working on that. Other than reading about the project and following the guidelines, is there a standard protocol to use when I start working on a project? For example, should I notify someone that I'm working on it? If so, who should I notify?

Read the guidelines for your WikiProject. I doubt it though because anyone can edit pretty much any page at will, so there's really no point in notifying anyone anywhere, unless you want to iron out differences or collaborate otherwise. Xiner (talk, email) 20:48, 1 February 2007 (UTC)

You can use any of the dead external link templates to mark a link as dead. However, when a dead link is in a paragraph, it is recomended that you use {{dlw-inline|url=Insert Dead Url here|title=caption}} in place of the dead link, or {{dl-s|Insert Dead URL here}} after the dead link. Iced Kola^(Mmm...) 20:08, 2 February 2007 (UTC)

Pitchfork Media rating templates

Hello, having the 10 stars for a website that includes decimals within their ratings is pointless, a more explicit display of the rating is much better in the case of Pitchfork Media reviews

Why do you think the 10-star ratings are pointless and what do you mean by "a more explicit display of the rating"? Do you mean like "(8/10)"? I see the star displays as a good visual snapshot of what the reviewer thinks of the album. If I want more details, I can click on the link and go read the review. Otoh, I just read the guidelines on the Album Project page more carefully and it seems to say not to use the {{Rating-10}} template. DOH! Sanfranman59 22:29, 11 February 2007 (UTC)

I guess I'd best stick to simply fixing broken links for now until I more fully digest the Album Project guidelines. One of the things that I'm discovering as I become more active in the Wikipedia community is that it's difficult to know when someone is speaking from authority or experience. You can come up with a rough guess by looking at the age of the account. Click on "User contributions", and then click on "Oldest". While this, obviously, isn't going to always give a perfect picture of whether someone knows what they're talking about or not, it can be better than nothing. Jkelly 01:29, 12 February 2007 (UTC)

Thanks for the suggestion. I've spent the last hour or so looking back through the discussion pages at Wikipedia:WikiProject_Albums and, perhaps not surprisingly, this can of worms has been open for quite some time. From my read of it, the consensus of the relatively few people (maybe 10 or so) who have discussed this topic is that unless the source specifically uses stars in grading its reviews, the star templates should not be used. Much of the discussion has been around whether to ever use the star templates, even when the source does so. As best as I can determine, no consensus has been reached, but I'm still reading. As much as I hate the thought of doing it, I think I'm going to go back through all the articles I've modified over the past week or so and get rid of the stars for those sources that don't use a star system. Response to message at Wikipedia talk:WikiProject Baseball/Players

The markup listed on the template page contains a lot of parameters that are rarely used, and lacks some that are common. If you browse around current player bios, you'll notice the infoboxes contain pretty much the same information: team, uniform number, primary position, hitting and throwing hand, debut info, three stat fields, and former teams. Here's what I use. Hopefully nobody will mind my clogging up this page with it.

I put some place holders in, so you could see what's normally linked and what is not. A note about stats: use your discretion about which ones to include. If the above box were for Scott Podsednik, stolen bases would give a better idea of what he does than homerun. Batting average and ERA are pretty standard, but feel free to adapt the rest.

As for career stat charts, they're generally frowned upon and will probably be deleted. I've removed plenty myself. The best idea is to include a links to baseball reference, under the "External links" header. Luckily, there's a template for this too:

Every baseball reference player page has an id at the end of the URL. The one above links to Placido Polanco. Paste the template with the corresponding id into an article, and you get this:

In response to your question about who is worthy of an article, WP:BIO says that anyone who's played in a "fully professional league" can have an article, but in practice most editors set the standard a little higher. Top prospects and players likely to make the majors, such as Alex Gordon and Cameron Maybin, but your energy could probably be better spent improving an existing article than adding a stub on a AAA lifer. That's just my opinion, though.

I generally don't add infoboxes to players who haven't played in the majors, since the presence of the infobox implies that they have, but again, that's just my personal rule. I have seen the boxes with minor league stats in them. I don't remember how the editor noted that they were minor league stats. If a player has appeared in the majors even once, use his Major League stats.

In 2001, I opened a pack of baseball cards and got a Boof Bonser RC. I almost died laughing. I've been tracking his career in detail ever since. You have no idea how surreal it is to have my obscure, hopeless minor leaguer actually make it to the majors and be the #2 guy on the Twins. Honestly, as I read the criteria for a B-class article, I think Sowers is there already. I just started rating articles, and I don't want to over-rate one. I think it's B-class, and if you can get another user to agree, I think it can safely be upgraded. One tiny thing - the lead-in could use something about Sowers now - in his first full season, etc., to establish that he's a noteworthy Indian and not, say, filling in for another injured starter or something. Helpme request: NPOV tag

Is there some protocol that I'm supposed to follow before removing an {{npov-section}} tag from an article? I've been working on sourcing Blood on the Tracks. First of all, I'm not sure that it was appropriately tagged in the first place as there is no discussion on the article Talk page (unless it's because the first 3 paragraphs are a quote from a Salon.com article). The tag was added by an anonymous user back in October (diff link) and it's the only contribution from this IP address. The only clue as to the reason for the tag is in the edit summary: 'NPOV warning: "an ineffable moment in his most vulnerable song" etc'. But since the quote comes directly from the Salon article, it doesn't seem to me to be non-NPOV. The original editor didn't reference the source. Now that I have added the reference, is it legit to remove the tag and the NPOV disputes category? If not, what's the process? Any guidance will be greatly appreciated. If you do not see any problem or think that you have resolved the problem, feel free to remove the tag. In general keep in mind that many of these taggings do not have and do not need an explanation on the talk page: POV and other issues are often self-evident, and the tagger might explain in the edit summary. Obviously, if someone replaces the tag or brings the issue up on the talk page, discuss there. As with most everything on Wikipedia, do what you think is appropriate for an encyclopedia. There are a scattering of crazy people of various sorts, but in general: the person who tagged an article thought there was a problem, though the tagger might have been mistaken or have done it hastily or might be himself biased, and the same is true of what you're doing.

For this section in particular, the person probably thought the "The songs" section was unbalanced or did not accurately reflect the totality of reviews. These sorts of sections are especially difficult because we cannot simply completely include all the opinions of every reviewer, and it is sometimes difficult to decide the relative merit or reliability of different reviewers and publications, and even if you think you have it rather objectively right, someone will come along who loved or hated the song who cites a handful of apparently perfectly reliable reviews that support the position, etc. —Centrx→talk • 00:35, 20 March 2007 (UTC)

Baseball statistic updates

I'm not sure if there's ever been a discussion about how frequently to update stats, but I'm pretty sure that if you posed the question to WikiProject Baseball almost everyone would agree with you. I don't remember where, but buried in some piece of policy is the point that Wikipedia articles generally don't contain information that changes on a day to day basis. This always happens at the start of the season, and most of the editors don't keep it up. If the editor doesn't respond to your message, I'd just change it back. If it becomes an issue, leave a message on the Project talk page and I think you'll find the consensus is in your favor.--Djrobgordon 21:32, 5 April 2007 (UTC)

Actually, the only edits I made were moving the pages to reflect the standard title format for the pages. Aside from that, I haven't to my own knowledge made any other changes to rosters. This is just an example, I can't recall the real instances. But there were some that were like "Template:Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim roster", some like "Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim roster", among other variations. That's fine. When I did what I did, I didn't have an opinion, and I still don't. The way that I moved them was simply the way that I could get mostly all of the roster "templates" the same title format with the fewest necessary page moves. Phil Stockman nationality

Nationality is not determined on place of birth, but rather citizenship. Hi there. In response to your question about VF on the CVU talk page, you might want to try downgrading your VF to version 3.3 as it seems like some people have trouble with more recent versions. RE: Owens as Closer

Well, today on the "Marlins On Deck" pregame show, Fredi Gonzales said that after he has given Owens the past few save situations he was going to put him in to keep closing games . I also saw later that the MLB.com depth chart designated him as the closer. He has been put in in the last 4 save situations (plus one 9th inning that got him a win). Roster moves

When teams make a roster move without a corresponding move, it's the other way around. Someone gets demoted or placed on the DL, then later another guy is added. There just shouldn't be 26 guys listed on the 25-man roster, and since you don't know who has been demoted or deactivated you can't avoid this. Therefore, Lerew should stay inactive until spot is cleared for him.Chris Nelson 06:45, 8 May 2007 (UTC)

Hell I'll change the ones I've edited myself if the template is changed. I'm all for it changing. But I don't like the idea of presenting wrong info, and that's what is happening with the way the current template is. There shouldn't be wrong info on articles just in case something might change in the future. I don't see why this guy is doing all this information, which is basically 95% copied from the yyyy in baseball, then he also doesn't understand to change every single yyyy in baseball to yyyy MLB season, that it would take years of work to change everything back. Artistdirect reviews

Nice job on cleaning up the reviews! Regarding this change, note that WP:ALBUM#Review sites lists Artistdirect as a review source for professional reviews. AFAICT some Artistdirect reviews are copies of All Music Guide reviews, some (like this one) are not. Perhaps we should stop recommending using reviews from Artistdirect, but it should probably be discussed first (preferably at WT:ALBUM). --PEJL 21:51, 25 June 2007 (UTC)

I'm not sure how carefully the entries at WP:ALBUM#Review sites have been considered. I can see the argument for removing Artistdirect (and Buy.com) from that list. As for the star ratings, I've removed quite a number of those myself, so hopefully that will lighten your load a little. Milton Bradley

I understand your reasoning, but technically it's inaccurate. Bradley will never be on the extended roster for the Padres. With definite Major Leaguers that are traded like Bradley or Maroth, they will simply not be on the roster at all until they go to the 25-man roster. I was aware of the Thompson move, however that move is just a precursor to someone on the 25-man roster being DLed or optioned to the extended roster to make room for Bradley. Since Bradley will never be on the extended roster, it is inaccurate to put him there. We should just keep things accurate at all times, which in this case is to leave him completely off the template until someone from the 25-man roster is cleared and Bradley is added. Ernest Lanigan

A copyright violation? Ya think? :) I didn't write it, it was already there. It also restates much of what's in the book's intro. You asked how the book is. Well, if you like the writing style of that time period, and if you don't mind reading about stuff you might already know about, it's worth a look. Keep in mind that it's mostly info that's been brought along and expanded in subsequent works, like the Sporting News record books, the Turkin and Thompson Encylopedias, the MacMillan encyclopedias, and later the Total Baseball series. I find it of interest largely for its historical value and the sometimes-pithy comments by the writer, such as pointing out when somebody else got some facts wrong. Nor did I take it that you were implying I wrote it. :) With or without copyright violation, it's not properly structured, so I didn't want anyone thinking I had written something so poorly. One of my minor objectives would be to re-write it in such a way that it gives the facts without being a verbatim theft, and also to cite the book itself as the source, if I haven't done so already in the article.

I did some work on the article. Please give it a look. I'm sure it can use improvements, but it's better than it was. Many of the facts in it were stated twice, for one thing. I tried to put it into something resembling chronological order. Baseball Bugs 04:02, 6 July 2007 (UTC)

Tanyon Sturtze's #

Just letting you know now since you are the person who edits MLB rosters as much as I do. Although Sturtze is listed at 37 on the Braves' roster, I'm sure you are aware that Jo-Jo Reyes is also wearing that number on the active roster. While we normally keep extended roster guys with their listed numbers even if it's a duplicate, I've confirmed that Sturtze is wearing 34 now. I am a die-hard hometown Braves fan, and in tonight's game against Pittsburgh I caught a glimpse of Sturtze in the dugout after an Andruw home run. He was indeed wearing 34. Yeah I'm very happy with it. I love Salty and think he'll be good, but he's not very good defensively at first and Teixeira is obviously more proven. And Andrus has a lot of potential now too, but obviously he's got a ways to go. I've also heard we're trying to get Bronson Arroyo and Octavio Dotel, and if Schuerholz could do that without giving up Yunel Escobar the man is a god. I don't use VP regularly, so I can't advise how to fix the mis-addressed warnings issue. (Personally, I watch new-editor changes and eyeball changes, or else I use Vandal Fighter but do the warnings manually.) It's OK on the mistaken VandalProof error you posted on my page and cleaned up. This is a known new bug that has been discussed at User_talk:AmiDaniel/VP/Bugs#Rollback.2Fwarn_problem. In the meantime, and until it is fixed, I use VP as an browser, doing manual edits as I have been burned by this too. Let them know you also have this problem. Happy wiking and go chase the vandals!
