Phototroph

The article is a good starting point in my opinion, but the content could be further developed and refined so the article feels more complete. Additionally, the article could benefit from proofreading to reduce spelling and grammatical errors. The first paragraph needs some references as not all of the information there is common knowledge which leaves many unsupported claims. For example, in the 3rd sentence the author talks about a common misconception yet provides no reference to back up this claim which makes this a reference to an unnamed source. Wikipedia suggests at least one citation per paragraph and this first paragraph has none. Some terms in the article could be hyperlinked to the original article as well to provide the reader with more resources, such as “lithotroph” in the first paragraph. The history section was very lacking and the information was so undeveloped that it felt irrelevant. It would be helpful to the reader for the history section to have more detail about the origins of the term and perhaps explain why and how the definition changed. The sources used in the article appear to be reliable and fit within Wikipedia’s guidelines for good sources. The article maintains a neutral viewpoint and does not show signs of bias or plagiarism. The flowchart at the end of the article was a helpful graphic that summed up many of the ideas discussed in the article and left readers with an easy to follow method to distinguish autotrophs, heterotrophs, and their subtypes.

Assignment #2

I would like to add a section on the applications of Halobacterium (such as in medicine, industry and biotechnology) to the current article “Halobacterium”. Since I will be adding a section that does not already exist I cannot provide a critique of a current section of the article, therefore my only critique would be that this information is non-existent in the current article. There are many good sources available that detail recent developments and prospective applications in addition to many present uses of Halobacteria in industry (such as in food production and cosmetics). I think the addition of this information will be useful to the article because the current information on the page is only as current as 2013 and there are no mentions of any applications or current research on Halobacterium. I chose this article because it was rated as a Start article and I felt that the article was informative but that there was more that could be added to make the article more complete and cover more than just the basics about Halobacterium. The current sources used in the article are reliable and from reputable and independent sources. This article has high notability and there is significant coverage on the topic in journal articles and other reputable sources. So far I have found multiple sources that will contribute to the proposed addition of an “Applications” section, including an entire chapter in a book that details the bioprospecting of extreme halophiles, a journal article that considers the medical applications of radiation-resistance mechanisms found in Halobacteria, and a third journal article that considers the biotechnical, environmental, pharmaceutical and industrial applications of enzymes, biosurfactants and other compounds synthesized by halophilic bacteria. I would ideally like to add sub-sections to the “Applications” section for each of these potential categories of applications however, the amount of information I end up adding to any given section will depend on the notability of the subject in the sources I use as I only want to add information for which there are multiple sources covering it.
