Discussion: Agnostic Atheism and Reliability of Wikipedia

So you got rid of the talk regarding "Agnostic Atheism" (and Wikinights stated here on your talke page that he was offended) when that term is minimally passible as a legitimate term according to Professor Paul Draper of Perdue University, (whose credentials are beyond reproach), who wrote on this subject in the Stanford Encyclopedia of Philosophy which is put together by the top Professors at the top Universities in the country? [1][2]

Here is what is offensive. You and others thinking that a book written in 1894 by James Alexander Harrison, which has no Bibliography, (Professor Drapers does), which is basically just a book of his viewpoints on subjects is superior? That is not only totally offensive in and of itself that people editing would believe this, it is also totally offensive to users of Wikipedia that rely on accurate up to date information and resources.

Further Proof of Wikipedia's Non-Reliability:

I was Manager of Financial Planning and Analysis for Brinks Home Security. When unpacking after a move recently I came across my business card. So of course it brought back memories. I thought I would check to see what was written about Brinks Home Security on Wikipedia. It was pretty much a joke. So I corrected some things. A user that only went by an IP address reverted my changes back. So I don't know if it's still there, but since just like the Agnostic Atheism piece it's a waste of time to put in accurate information, from reliable sources, today I put in the following at the top of the page.

"Some of the information below is incorrect. I had put in a correction on the top but it got deleted. I worked for Brinks Home Security from 1986-1991, first as a Senior Financial Analyst, and then as Manager of Financial Planning and Analysis.[3] I can be contacted for further information and verification at 469-613-7236.

Also here is the linkedin page of the second President and CEO of Brinks Home Security, (Peter Michel) from 1988-2001.[4]

Now whoever deleted my correction at the top, would like to get their facts straight on this company, please call me. Or any user can call me to get the correct information."

Now by the time you check this page this information above will probably be deleted again, just like when I made actual corrections. This is why Wikipedia is a joke and I don't use it, nor edit it any longer, (check my history, I made two edits in 2012, then was gone till recently. The only reason I came back was because people on social media cite this piece of crap encyclopedia, which is a piece of crap because anyone can go in and take out factual information. So why, as a professional researcher would I waste my time with a bunch of people who for the most part don't know how to do proper research and put in garbage into an encyclopedia?[5] — Preceding unsigned comment added by Madjess (talk • contribs) 19:47, 19 November 2020 (UTC)[reply]

First of all, I did not get rid of the discussion, I archived it. Second of all, what exactly do you hope to accomplish by writing an essay about why you think Wikipedia is trash? I'm not forcing you to use it, and I don't make all the policies here. And obviously you do still care about Wikipedia if you are willing to write all this about it. Hey Saucy, I'm a fairly new editor so i didn't really know how to start a discussion. I tried it before the move but i couldn't figure it out so can you help me? My reasoning behind the move was that the article clearly is about George's whole career rather than just his joji part. I think the name filthy frank is also highly popular just like the name joji is. The name joji can still be used as a redirect if people search for it. Undid revision 1041564905 by Saucy (talk) Routine Calculations are not considered Original Research

I composed a spreadsheet that calculates the contribution of each state to the 2010 mean US population center. I then calculated the influence of each state's 2010 to 2020 population change to the 2010 centroid to determine the centroid's 2020 position. I used this method to successfully estimate the 2010 population centroid and post it on this Wikipedia entry, to the apparent appreciation of local residents and regional media. @108.50.182.207: I believe that the "routine calculations" clause of the original research policy is more for simple calculations, such as converting between units. However, finding the mean population center of the United States is such a complex calculation that it would be very difficult for other editors to verify that it's true. "Routine calculations do not count as original research, provided there is consensus among editors that the result of the calculation is correct, and a meaningful reflection of the sources." I suspect it would be difficult to get consensus that your result is correct, since it is not an official calculation. Saucy[talk – contribs] 02:57, 8 September 2021 (UTC)[reply]

My spreadsheet is fairly simple and straightforward (3 columns of data, 9 columns of calculations, and a row for each US state), and uses only four fundamental mathematical functions: addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division, so it is not difficult to interpret. I have a high level of confidence in my method because it worked in 2010. I would like to try to obtain a consensus among the editors of this page that my calculation is an estimate rigorous enough to be added. @Junaruga: Hi there! Thank you very much for all your contributions on the Framework article; I appreciate all the work you've put into expanding and improving the article. But I feel like you actually went a little overboard. See Wikipedia:What Wikipedia is not. For example, information about the firmware of the embedded controller isn't relevant to most people, and feels out-of-scope for an encyclopedia. The article also has a lot of links to help guides and forums, which isn't really the purpose of Wikipedia either. @Saucy Thank you for your feedback! I am sorry to be late to reply to you. I checked the Wikipedia page "What Wikipedia is not.". I tried to simplify the firmware section, adding other section "mainboards" and "expansion cards" in balance. My intent of the firmware part is because it is only a software developed by the company Framework. It directly affects users experiences. As a person who have seen the users community, I feel that firmware is an important factor of this laptop, unlike other companies laptops. I will continue to improve this page. Thank you. Hi there, I see you have edited the Panera Bread logo on wikipedia before. Our marketing department has asked we serve up the wordmark as the logo instead of the images we refer to as "Mother Bread". It's correct now in the USA, but Google is pulling in the old logo still from the German version of wikipedia. Do you know how to replace this logo https://de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Datei:Panera_Bread_Logo.svg with this one Panera Bread#/media/File:Panera Bread wordmark.svg

@PaneraTerry: I've went ahead and replaced the logo on the German Panera Bread article with the new one, though that hasn't deleted the file. It seems strange to me that Google is specifically pulling the image from the German Wikipedia; I suspect someone from Google has manually set it to do that. To remove it from Google you would probably have to either contact Google or delete the file from the German Wikipedia. Since the Mother Bread version of the logo is copyrighted, it could probably be deleted fairly easily; though I'm not familiar with the German Wikipedia's deletion policies and procedures. Also, since I assume you are employed by Panera, be sure to follow Wikipedia's conflict of interest policy when making any edits. Saucy[talk – contribs] 01:02, 11 December 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Yes, I oversee our search presence as well as some other digital marketing components within Panera. Will definitely read up on that. My objective is to just ensure accuracy, not using Wiki for promotion. Updates for editors

  • Readers of 42 more wikis can now use Dark Mode. If the option is not yet available for logged-out users of your wiki, this is likely because many templates do not yet display well in Dark Mode. Please use the night-mode-checker tool if you are interested in helping to reduce the number of issues. The recommendations page provides guidance on this. Dark Mode is enabled on additional wikis once per month.
  • Editors using the 2010 wikitext editor as their default can access features from the 2017 wikitext editor by adding ?veaction=editsource to the URL. If you would like to enable the 2017 wikitext editor as your default, it can be set in your preferences. [2]
  • For logged-out readers using the Vector 2022 skin, the "donate" link has been moved from a collapsible menu next to the content area into a more prominent top menu, next to "Create an account". This restores the link to the level of prominence it had in the Vector 2010 skin. Learn more about the changes related to donor experiences. [3]
  • The CampaignEvents extension provides tools for organizers to more easily manage events, communicate with participants, and promote their events on the wikis. The extension has been enabled on Arabic Wikipedia, Igbo Wikipedia, Swahili Wikipedia, and Meta-Wiki. Chinese Wikipedia has decided to enable the extension, and discussions on the extension are in progress on Spanish Wikipedia and on Wikidata.   • View all 22 community-submitted tasks that were resolved last week.

  • Developers with an account on Wikitech-wiki should check if any action is required for their accounts. The wiki is being changed to use the single-user-login (SUL) system, and other configuration changes. This change will help reduce the overall complexity for the weekly software updates across all our wikis.

  • The server switch was completed successfully last week with a read-only time of only 2 minutes 46 seconds. This periodic process makes sure that engineers can switch data centers and keep all of the wikis available for readers, even if there are major technical issues. It also gives engineers a chance to do maintenance and upgrades on systems that normally run 24 hours a day, and often helps to reveal weaknesses in the infrastructure. The process involves dozens of software services and hundreds of hardware servers, and requires multiple teams working together. Work over the past few years has reduced the time from 17 minutes down to 2–3 minutes. [4]

  • Advanced item Later this month, temporary accounts will be rolled out on several pilot wikis. The final list of the wikis will be published in the second half of the month. If you maintain any tools, bots, or gadgets on these 11 wikis, and your software is using data about IP addresses or is available for logged-out users, please check if it needs to be updated to work with temporary accounts.   • Advanced item Rate limiting has been enabled for the code review tools Gerrit and GitLab to address ongoing issues caused by malicious traffic and scraping. Updates for editors

  • The Structured Discussion extension (also known as Flow) is starting to be removed. This extension is unmaintained and causes issues. It will be replaced by DiscussionTools, which is used on any regular talk page. A first set of wikis are being contacted. These wikis are invited to stop using Flow, and to move all Flow boards to sub-pages, as archives. At these wikis, a script will move all Flow pages that aren't a sub-page to a sub-page automatically, starting on 22 October 2024. On 28 October 2024, all Flow boards at these wikis will be set in read-only mode. [14][15]
  • WMF's Search Platform team is working on making it easier for readers to perform text searches in their language. A change last week on over 30 languages makes it easier to find words with accents and other diacritics. This applies to both full-text search and to types of advanced search such as the hastemplate and incategory keywords. More technical details (including a few other minor search upgrades) are available. [16]
  • View all 20 community-submitted tasks that were resolved last week. For example, EditCheck was installed at Russian Wikipedia, and fixes were made for some missing user interface styles.

Updates for technical contributors

  • Editors who use the Toolforge tool Earwig's Copyright Violation Detector will now be required to log in with their Wikimedia account before running checks using the "search engine" option. This change is needed to help prevent external bots from misusing the system. Thanks to Chlod for these improvements. [17]
  • Phabricator users can create tickets and add comments on existing tickets via Email again. Sending email to Phabricator has been fixed. [18]
  • Advanced item Some HTML elements in the interface are now wrapped with a <bdi> element, to make our HTML output more aligned with Web standards. More changes like this will be coming in future weeks. This change might break some tools that rely on the previous HTML structure of the interface.   • The Mobile Apps team has released an update to the iOS app's navigation, and it is now available in the latest App store version. The team added a new Profile menu that allows for easy access to editor features like Notifications and Watchlist from the Article view, and brings the "Donate" button into a more accessible place for users who are reading an article. This is the first phase of a larger planned navigation refresh to help the iOS app transition from a primarily reader-focused app, to an app that fully supports reading and editing. The Wikimedia Foundation has added more editing features and support for on-wiki communication based on volunteer requests in recent years.

Updates for editors

  • Wikipedia readers can now download a browser extension to experiment with some early ideas on potential features that recommend articles for further reading, automatically summarize articles, and improve search functionality.   • Later this month, logged-out editors of these 12 wikis will start to have temporary accounts created. The list may slightly change - some wikis may be removed but none will be added. Temporary account is a new type of user account. It enhances the logged-out editors' privacy and makes it easier for community members to communicate with them. If you maintain any tools, bots, or gadgets on these 12 wikis, and your software is using data about IP addresses or is available for logged-out users, please check if it needs to be updated to work with temporary accounts.   • It is now possible to create functions on Wikifunctions using Wikidata lexemes, through the new Wikidata lexeme type launched last week. When you go to one of these functions, the user interface provides a lexeme selector that helps you pick a lexeme from Wikidata that matches the word you type. After hitting run, your selected lexeme is retrieved from Wikidata, transformed into a Wikidata lexeme type, and passed into the selected function.   • Advanced item Users of the Wikimedia sites can now format dates more easily in different languages with the new {{#timef:…}} parser function. For example, {{#timef:now|date|en}} will show as "28 October 2024". Previously, {{#time:…}} could be used to format dates, but this required knowledge of the order of the time and date components and their intervening punctuation. #timef (or #timefl for local time) provides access to the standard date formats that MediaWiki uses in its user interface. This may help to simplify some templates on multi-lingual wikis like Commons and Meta. [25][26]
  • Advanced item Commons and Meta users can now efficiently retrieve the user's language using {{USERLANGUAGE}} instead of using {{int:lang}}. [27]
  • The Product and Tech Advisory Council (PTAC) now has its pilot members with representation across Africa, Asia, Europe, North America and South America. Guided Tour maintainers can check their tours to see that nothing looks odd. They can also set emitTransitionOnStep to true to fix an old bug. They can use the new flag allowAutomaticBack to avoid back-buttons they don't want. [30]
  • Administrators in the Wikimedia projects who use the Nuke Extension will notice that mass deletions done with this tool have the "Nuke" tag. This change will make reviewing and analyzing deletions performed with the tool easier. [31]
