NYC subway diagram[edit]

An SVG that uses Arial has been uploaded. File:NYC_subway-4C.svg Just a warning: the SVG was designed to use Helvetica Medium, not Arial. Your mileage may vary.

I can't stand the Vignelli map as a subway map. I think it's a masterpiece of design, but it's a lousy subway map. First, the map doesn't give you nearly enough information. Look at the N train's path here. [1] It appears that the N always runs local in Manhattan, which just isn't true. The N runs express during the weekdays, so good luck getting to the the Sea Beach line from 8th and Broadway. Second, New Yorkers already know what the street grid looks like in their heads, and they want their subway map to reflect their mental map of the grid, at least conceptually. Here, for instance, Vignelli screws up: it looks like the 4 5 6 runs straight up the same avenue through Midtown, even though the East Side line jumps from Park to Lexington between 33rd and 42nd. [2] Things like that are great design, but they don't help you get where you want to go.
