Imaging vs. non-imaging sensors

Since you made a comment about Lacrosse in the IMINT article, perhaps you might be interested in making some suggestions about where some things belong between the MASINT series of article and IMINT. It's never going to be completely clean, since some of the SAR/ISAR really isn't trying to create an image, but measure characteristics of surface texture.

In like manner, some of the electro-optical technologies straddle IMINT and MASINT. For example, the Rocket Launch Spotter uses non-imaging electro-optical or acoustic sensors for initial detection, but then slews a TV camera onto the threat axis. There is early work on imaging LIDAR.

I'm at a loss how best to handle both the clearly imaging radars (and what about sonars?) as well as the straddling cases. If possible, it's my goal to get together a few editors with interest in some aspects of intelligence, for brainstorming, and even, at some point, an intelligence and special operations project.
