Your Signature[edit]

In reply to User_talk:Krashlandon/Old#My_Signature
Before you can upload pictures, your account must be Autoconfirmed, which means that it must be four days old and have more than 10 edits. Also, please post to my main talk page, not the archive. Thanks, and if you need any more help, don't be afraid to ask me or post "{{help me}}" on your talk page. Krashlandon 04:34, 2 December 2010 (UTC)[reply]

You only have to sign your name once, by the way, at the end of your comments. Use four tildes, placed one space after each post. Like this... Krashlandon 15:07, 2 December 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Almost. Just remove your name. All you need to type is four tildes. The program takes care of the rest. It should look like this. ~~~~

Categories[edit]

Please do not add religion, ethnic, or descent categories to biography articles without first ensuring that 1) the category is supported by sourced article content and 2) the individual identifies as such. Please see WP:EGRS for additional information. --Jezebel'sPonyobons mots 01:49, 4 December 2010 (UTC) Thanks for your tips, they are as helpful as they are appreciated.[reply]

Another reminder, please do not add unsourced information to articles; this includes categories, especially those that fall under WP:EGRS (example - your edit to Florence Bates).--Jezebel'sPonyobons mots 02:04, 14 December 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Barack Obama is not categorically a Socialist, as perhaps a bit of reading on the subject in reliable sources would clue you into. Nor, upon my picking another edit from your history, is Judy Garland British. We try to avoid overcategorization of subjects and we insist on accurate and reliably sourced information. When you link to a YouTube video, please fill in a Template:Cite video reference indicating both what is said and at what point in the video it is said. Your recent edits[edit]

Hello. In case you didn't know, when you add content to talk pages and Wikipedia pages that have open discussion, you must sign your posts by typing four tildes ( ~~~~ ) at the end of your comment. You may also click on the signature button located above the edit window. This will automatically insert a signature with your username or IP address and the time you posted the comment. This information is useful because other editors will be able to tell who said what, and when. Thank you. --SineBot (talk) 02:07, 4 December 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Advice on uploading images[edit]

Hello!

Thanks for uploading some pictures to Wikipedia. I wanted to make sure you were aware of some of the requirements and good practices for uploaded images.

  • Pick an image name.
When uploading an image, pick a file name that is descriptive, and unique. Remember that many images may be uploaded about the same topic, and remember that names are case sensitive.
  • Source the image.
On the image description page, explain where the image came from. If you created the image yourself, then say so. If it's from the web, give a URL. If it's a screenshot of a movie or game, or a scan from a book, give the title.
  • Provide copyright and license information.
This part is a little bit trickier, but it's very important. The copyright of the image generally belongs to whoever created it.
If it's a photograph you took, or an image you created (modifying an image that already exists doesn't count) in software like Photoshop or GIMP, then you hold the copyright. To upload it to Wikipedia, you must agree to license it under the GFDL (which allows anyone to use it, but requires that they give credit to the original author and requires that any further edit to the image be licensed under the GFDL as well) or release it into the public domain (which allows anyone to use it for any purpose without restriction.) Do this by placing an appropriate tag on the image description page, like {{GFDL}} or {{PD-self}}. Be sure to mention that you created the image. If you're using {{PD-self}}, you may also want to use {{NoRightsReserved}}, since there is some dispute as to whether one may grant items into the public domain.
If you didn't create the image, or the copyright somehow belongs to another party (like a screenshot, which you might "create", but the copyright belongs to the author of the movie or video game), then you need to find another tag that describes the copyright status of the image. Images used on Wikipedia need to be free for our use and the use of sites which reproduce our content. This means that images cannot have a restriction such as "only for use by Wikipedia", or "for non-commercial use only", or "for educational use". Images without a free license may be usable in certain articles under our policy for non-free content, but such a use must be justified on the image description page.
  • Describe the image.
To another reader, the image may not be immediately understood. A caption in an article doesn't explain the image to a visitor who sees it on its image page. Put a brief explanation of what is in the image on the image description page, similar to what you might include in a caption on an article.

Please read through some of the links provided in this advice, especially those relating to copyright, image use and public domain. Free images are always used in preference to an non-free image, and that is part of Wikipedia's main aim of providing free content. You have recently uploaded a number of nonfree images, and if a free image is not available, some of these may be suitable, but in many cases you've removed the free image to include the nonfree image. This is counter to both policy and practice. Today I replaced three images at Laraine Day, Dorothy Lamour and Irene Dunne with an edit summary that should at least have given you a moment to pause and read back through this section, but instead of doing that you reverted these edits with a "I added a picture" edit summary. It's very bad form to revert an editor without at least looking at the reason for their edit. I notice you also removed a image deletion caption from an image in the Irene Dunne article. The purpose of this caption is to alert other editors that the use of the image is questioned and thereby provide them an opportunity to comment. Please do not remove notes like this. They will be removed at the conclusion of the discussion to delete, if the decision is to retain the image. Thanks Rossrs (talk) 11:10, 21 December 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Welcome to Wikipedia. Everyone is welcome to contribute to the encyclopedia, but when you add or change content please cite a reliable source for the content of your edit. This helps maintain our policy of verifiability. Take a look at Wikipedia:Citing sources for information about how to cite sources and the welcome page to learn more about contributing to this encyclopedia. Thank you.   — Jeff G.  ツ 04:46, 9 December 2010 (UTC)[reply]

File:Irene-Dunne-older.jpg listed for deletion[edit]

A file that you uploaded or altered, File:Irene-Dunne-older.jpg, has been listed at Wikipedia:Files for deletion. Please see the discussion to see why this is (you may have to search for the title of the image to find its entry), if you are interested in it not being deleted. Thank you. Gavia immer (talk) 01:35, 14 December 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Please refrain from introducing inappropriate pages, such as The Golden Girls Death Cycle, to Wikipedia. Doing so is not in accordance with our policies. If you would like to experiment, please use the sandbox.

If you think that this notice was placed here in error, you may contest the deletion by adding {{hang on}} to the top of the page that has been nominated for deletion (just below the existing speedy deletion, or "db", tag; if no such tag exists, then the page is no longer a speedy delete candidate and adding a hang-on tag is unnecessary), coupled with adding a note on the talk page explaining your position, but be aware that once tagged for speedy deletion, if the page meets the criterion, it may be deleted without delay. Please do not remove the speedy deletion tag yourself, but don't hesitate to add information to the page that would render it more in conformance with Wikipedia's policies and guidelines. ttonyb (talk) 19:34, 14 December 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Edit summary accuracy[edit]

Dear Selma Simpson, I wanted to leave you a note asking you to be more descriptive (or at least more accurate) in what you put in your edit summaries. At [1] you said 'added a fact', but all you did was remove the refimprove tag. Even considering your previous edit, you didn't improve the references...just added some categories. The quality of the references on that article really isn't great, so with the tag hopefully someone can come up with better ones. Thanks! Syrthiss (talk) 17:34, 15 December 2010 (UTC)[reply]

This holds true with your edit summary on Joan Perry, where you wrote "added a fact" when truthfully what you had done was change her birthdate. As you did not provide a reliable source for the change in DOB I have restored the original birthdate. Please remember that it is necessary that you include a reliable source for verification when adding or changing information in articles. --Jezebel'sPonyobons mots 17:45, 15 December 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Oh you see there was a mistake with the date of death, I just had to fix that because it was listed incorrectly. Selma Simpson (talk) 17:46, 15 December 2010 (UTC)Selma Simpson[reply]
I have removed the information again as you have sourced it to IMDB; IMDB is unequivocally not a reliable source for biographical information and should never be used as such. I truly hope you have not been basing your edits on information derived from their website as it will likely need to be reverted. You have been pointed to our policies and guidelines many times regarding reliable sources - please please please click and read that link before editing further. This will help ensure that the time and effort you put in to editing articles doesn't result in your edits being reverted as unreliably sourced. --Jezebel'sPonyobons mots 17:55, 15 December 2010 (UTC)[reply]
I've stubbed the Joan Perry article down completely to the basics. It is apparent that you built the entire article based on information derived from IMDB, which is not a reliable source. You are of course welcome to restore any of the information, on a case by case basis, provided that the restored information is cited to a reliable source. --Jezebel'sPonyobons mots 18:36, 15 December 2010 (UTC)[reply]
You still have not read WP:RS and are edit warring to keep unsourced information in an article. You have restored the birth/death dates and other personal information without stating your sources 'again! These are not my policies, these are Wikipedia's polices. Please revert your most recent edits where you have restored the unsourced information to the Joan Perry article, or I will request that an admin review your edits. --Jezebel'sPonyobons mots 18:49, 15 December 2010 (UTC)Selma Simpson (talk) 18:51, 15 December 2010 (UTC)Selma Simpson Listen please, I have just put in new references, the links are still processing. I will not revert anything because I found a different source since IMDb wasn't good enough for you.[reply]
No, it is certainly not good enough. NNDB is NOT a reliable source and just makes it even clearer that, despite multiple request from multiple editors, you have not actually read Wikipedia's policies on reliable sources. I will make a request for an independent review of the article, but you cannot keep on editing this way. --Jezebel'sPonyobons mots 18:56, 15 December 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Selma Simpson (talk) 19:01, 15 December 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Selma Simpson There are a lot of articles that use IMDb and NNDb as a reference so I fail to see why I can't use it as a reference. IMDb is a very reputable database and I see a lot of it here on Wikipedia.

You fail to see why it can't be used as a reference because you refuse to read our reliable sources policy. I've linked to it again, although I doubt it matters. You are simply not listening. IMDB is NOT a "very reputable database" and should only be linked to in the external links section, if at all. These are not my choices, this is Wikipedia consensus, which you are not following right now. --Jezebel'sPonyobons mots 19:05, 15 December 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Selma Simpson (talk) 19:09, 15 December 2010 (UTC)Selma Simpson You thinking I'm not listening is just an opinion. I am trying to prove a point. A lot of actor/actress pages here on Wikipedia used IMDb and NNDb quite a bit so I fail to see why Wikipedia feels the need to be a bunch of pickers and suddenly decide that those sites aren't good enough. I don't agree with this policy and after this post I will not be back to Wikipedia. Apparently nobody can really edit even though the information I had was just as reliable as anything else.[reply]

They shouldn't be using IMDB bio sections because these are user-written and do not fulfill our requirements for reliable sources. In due course, this information will hopefully be better-sourced but you will understand that this will take some time. Meanwhile, I strongly suggest you listen to the advice of other, more experienced, editors. You can always ask for an opinion on IMDB/NNDB on this noticeboard, but you'll get the same answer. Rodhullandemu 19:31, 15 December 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Note Wikipedia is not the place to "prove points", it's a place to create an encyclopedia based on neutrality and verifiably reliable content. It does not matter that there are other pages where IMDB is used, the fact is that, per long standing consensus, it cannot be used as a source for biographical and personal information. Period. No one "suddenly" decided anything. You are free to disagree with the policies, but what you cannot do is to ignore them and edit disruptively by knowingly inserting unreliably sourced information into biography articles. As I have previously advised another editor who edited in a strikingly similar fashion to yourself:
It is apparent that you are not happy with the way Wikipedia works with regard to our policies on sourcing. I have two suggestions as to how you can move forward:
  • 1) take a break from editing for a day or two. Come back refreshed and before making any new edits to articles, thoroughly review the policy and guideline links that have been provided to you. If anything is unclear regarding the guidelines, post a message on the guideline talk page or email me and I will be happy to expand or clarify. Perhaps a break and a firm grasp on how sourcing and editing work here will inspire a desire to contribute positively within our collaborative environment. We can always use enthusiastic editors to help improve Wikipedia!
  • 2) if you truly find Wikipedia's guidelines and policies too restrictive, perhaps it would be best to direct your enthusiasm for actresses towards another online project. There are many websites that are not as strict with regard to what can and cannot be added to articles.
Regardless of the path you choose, the one constant is that the edits you are currently making do not adhere to our policies and need to be removed. I sincerely hope that you listen to all the advice you've been given and choose option 1, however if you choose option 2 then I wish you the best of luck. --Jezebel'sPonyobons mots 19:38, 15 December 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Selma Simpson (talk) 20:33, 15 December 2010 (UTC)I've calmed down now, I apologize for my hissy fit I had a rather rough morning. I've decided to come back to Wikipedia and give it another chance. I will however take a few days as you said before I do anything else. Thanks for your advice.[reply]

Well, you're straight back to creating unsourced biography articles. Did you read WP:RS and WP:V? How about WP:EGRS? I'm honestly at a loss as to how to convince you that reading and working within these policies is necessary for editing, not a personal choice. --Jezebel'sPonyobons mots 14:30, 20 December 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Hi, I'm not ignoring them purposly it is just I've been a bit busy. I will be reading them when I get leisure time. Please don't get discouraged I'm not trying to frustrate you.Selma Simpson (talk) 15:35, 20 December 2010 (UTC)Selma Simpson[reply]

You have time to create new articles, but not time to read the guidelines and policies on how to create them? I seriously believe that you have no intention of following any advice regarding Wikipedia's verification policy and as such am disengaging from trying to assist you altogether. --Jezebel'sPonyobons mots 15:43, 20 December 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Replaceable fair use File:Estelle Parsons.jpg[edit]

Thanks for uploading File:Estelle Parsons.jpg. I noticed the description page specifies that the media is being used under a claim of fair use, but its use in Wikipedia articles fails our first non-free content criterion in that it illustrates a subject for which a freely licensed media could reasonably be found or created that provides substantially the same information or which could be adequately covered with text alone. If you believe this media is not replaceable, please:

  1. Go to the media description page and edit it to add {{di-replaceable fair use disputed}}, without deleting the original replaceable fair use template.
  2. On the image discussion page, write the reason why this image is not replaceable at all.

Alternatively, you can also choose to replace this non-free media by finding freely licensed media of the same subject, requesting that the copyright holder release this (or similar) media under a free license, or by taking a picture of it yourself.

If you have uploaded other non-free media, consider checking that you have specified how these images fully satisfy our non-free content criteria. You can find a list of description pages you have edited by clicking on this link. Note that even if you follow steps 1 and 2 above, non-free media which could be replaced by freely licensed alternatives will be deleted 2 days after this notification (7 days if uploaded before 13 July 2006), per our non-free content policy. If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you. Rossrs (talk) 12:54, 21 December 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Please do not add or change content without citing verifiable and reliable sources, as you did to Errol Flynn. Before making any potentially controversial edits, it is recommended that you discuss them first on the article's talk page. Please review the guidelines at Wikipedia:Citing sources and take this opportunity to add references to the article. Thank you. That Flynn was gay is an unsubstantiated allegation. That being so, we cannot categorise him as gay. Please don't add such cats again in the absence of incontrovertible evidence such as an admission from the subject of the article. Rodhullandemu 04:34, 23 December 2010 (UTC) Selma Simpson (talk) 04:37, 23 December 2010 (UTC) The only reason I put that in was because I noticed he was categotized in the "Bisexual actors" label. If this is so shouldn't that be taken from the categories at the bottom of his page to make it more factual?[reply]

  • I've removed it since again, it's an allegation rather than an acknowledged or proven fact. Categories are blunt instruments and should be applied with great care, and especially to living people. That way, neither you nor I nor the Wikimedia Foundation is likely to be sued for libel. Frankly, I can't afford to defend expensive lawsuits, and I suspect you can't either. Rodhullandemu 04:42, 23 December 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Replaceable fair use File:Lovely Lana Turner.jpg[edit]

Thanks for uploading File:Lovely Lana Turner.jpg.

Thank you. Vobor (talk) 20:21, 28 January 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Religion categories in biographies[edit]

On Wikipedia a person must self-identify with a particular denomination before being categorized; and the only way to know if they self-identify is a source indicating that the person is currently Catholic (or Baptist, or atheist, or whatever). That standard is frequently violated because many people think they can put anything about a person's religous beliefs in an article without reliable sourcing. If someone grows up an atheist but is now a Christian (see William J. Murray), do we put that person in the "Atheists" category?" MANY people grow up in a particular denomination (or lack thereof in Murray's case) but do not end up claiming that perspective when they are adults. This is a simple matter of following one of the very cornerstones of Wikipedia: "The threshold for inclusion in Wikipedia is verifiability, not truth." Alec Baldwin may very well be a Catholic right now, but the article doesn't state that. If you want to restore the category, please find a sourced statement to that effect. And remember, the responsibility for sourcing is on the person who adds or restores information. Thank you. Cresix (talk) 02:40, 10 March 2011 (UTC)[reply]

If this is the first article that you have created, you may want to read the guide to writing your first article.

You may want to consider using the Article Wizard to help you create articles.

A tag has been placed on Current USA, Inc., requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done under section G11 of the criteria for speedy deletion, because the page seems to be unambiguous advertising which only promotes a company, product, group, service or person and would need to be fundamentally rewritten in order to become an encyclopedia article. Please read the guidelines on spam and Wikipedia:FAQ/Business for more information.

If you think that this notice was placed here in error, contest the deletion by clicking on the button labelled "Click here to contest this speedy deletion". Doing so will take you to the talk page where you will find a pre-formatted place for you to explain why you believe the page should not be deleted. You can also visit the the page's talk page directly to give your reasons, but be aware that once tagged for speedy deletion, if the page meets the criterion, it may be deleted without delay. Please do not remove the speedy deletion tag yourself, but don't hesitate to add information to the page that would render it more in conformance with Wikipedia's policies and guidelines. If the page is deleted, you can contact one of these administrators to request that the administrator userfy the page or email a copy to you. MarkDask 16:37, 10 August 2011 (UTC)[reply]
