Intro to installing and using gadgets and user scripts

[edit]

Before I go off for a wikibreak, I wanted to give you these technical details.
To enhance editing, accessibility and user experience on Wikipedia, there are many softwares that can be installed such as gadgets and user scripts.
These are listed at Special:Preferences#mw-prefsection-gadgets and Wikipedia:User scripts/List.

For installation, some subpages of your userpage have to be created, as below:

Seven Thousand Spiders In A Trenchcoat/common.js (JavaScript),
Seven Thousand Spiders In A Trenchcoat/common.css (Cascading style sheets) both for locally installing scripts on a single wiki, and
Seven Thousand Spiders In A Trenchcoat/global.js for installing scripts on all your accounts of all Wikimedia projects.

For a constantly updated list of projects that you participate in, you can visit here.

To make logging into every wiki (affiliated with the Wikimedia Foundation) easier, you can create a global account at Meta-Wiki. This is done by a process called Single User Login (SUL).

You can either copy paste code of a script or simply install the Script Installer (which can install most scripts with a click of a button).

In my opinion, the most useful scripts are:

Wikipedia:Dark mode (described at User:Volker E. (WMF)/dark-mode),

Red Warn,

Twinkle,

Image Annotator,

Print Options,

Revision Jumper,

Reference Tooltips,

UTC Live Clock,

XTools,

More Menu,

Citation Expander,

ShortDesc Helper
and
Syntax Highlighter.

If you need any help regarding installation and usage of scripts, you can message me at my talk page, or discuss at Wikipedia talk:Gadget and Wikipedia talk:User scripts. Hope to see you again ;)CrafterNova [ TALK ]  [ CONT ] 06:12, 14 February 2022 (UTC)[reply]
