Sport stubs

Just to let you know that as I am currently sorting through Category:Sports team stubs I may be creating some of the tags off your proposed list. I will only be creating the template and not necessarily populating them. Just to save a few edits. I thought I better let you know just incase your wandering who/why they have been created. Sports team stubs

I think that ultimatley that would be a good idea, especially for those countries that have a new sport stub category. When I next have a spare couple of hours I will look into it, at the moment I am stuck with only editing for short periods, probably till sunday afternoon or next weekend. foo-sport-stub

I assume the figures you give next to the templates in the proposal for the by country sport stubs were gathered form catscan, what categories did you search because I'm either doing way to narrow a search or it stops working for me. Waacstats (talk) 17:48, 5 March 2011 (UTC)

IIRC they were figures derived from Category:Sport in Foo recursing four levels that transcluded {{foo-stub}}. I don't remember but I think I used AWB to get these numbers but the few countries I have looked at in more details so far suggest a big reluctance of editors to use {{foo-stub}} on sports articles (in these cases, I have used CatScan to find small articles in the same level of categories and manually added foo-stub tags before resorting later). I've just done some rechecks of numbers and I'm getting similar numbers again. I'm busy right now but I will return to this task during the week, I haven't forgotten about it! List of Maltese People

I didn't understand [1] where your edit summary says "UCI ProTour doesnt exist (David Millar)" - what does 'doesn't exist' mean in this context? Thanks. Dougweller (talk) 21:44, 11 March 2011 (UTC)

The UCI ProTour ceased to exist, first as a ranking for riders a couple of years ago and then altogether at the end of last year. It was replaced by the UCI World Tour. I changed Millar's description to one that won't need changing every few years. SeveroTC 08:10, 12 March 2011 (UTC)

Hi, with new stub types, you should leave it a few days between proposing and implementing. Even for new stubs which meet the "speediable criteria" (as I think this one does), it needs a day or two just to make sure the naming is good and everything. I raised one point - I expect the other people who contribute to that page to either agree with me or come up with something better (usually they do this second one!). So for now, my advice is just to hang back on it, maybe create the list of articles you think need tagging in your userspace and then in a few days, roll it out to all the articles. Welcome to our first issue of WikiProject Poland newsletter, the Monitor (named after the first Polish newspaper).

Our Project has been operational since 1 June, 2005, and also serves as the Poland-related Wikipedia notice board. I highly recommend watchlisting the Wikipedia:WikiProject Poland page, so you can be aware of the ongoing discussions. We hope you will join us in them, if you haven't done so already! Unlike many other WikiProjects, we are quite active; in this year alone about 40 threads have been started on our discussion page, and we do a pretty good job at answering all issues raised.

Rider templates

Hi Severo, I was looking through Category:Cycling team templates today, and noticed some inconsistency in the naming convention of these templates:

  1. Some use the UCI-code of the team: {{SAX}}
  2. Some use the team name: {{Omega Pharma-Lotto}}
  3. ...and finally, my favourite; team name riders: {{Euskaltel-Euskadi riders}}

There are pro's and con's with all of them, but I think we should settle on one naming convention, don't you think? lil2mas (talk) 12:16, 18 May 2011 (UTC)

Yes, this came up at WT:CYC a few months ago (here) because some disused ones were opposed at routine deletion. There are no guidelines for what templates should be called but I think it would be a good idea to standardise. SeveroTC 12:22, 18 May 2011 (UTC)
I read through the discussion, but it seems to concentrate itself on the idea of categorising past team members. I was thinking more of the present aspect, for navigational purposes mainly. However, if I might add, uncontroversial category moves (like the changing of a team name) can be done easily in a couple of days at WP:Categories for discussion/Speedy ;) lil2mas (talk) 13:40, 18 May 2011 (UTC)

...but back to the templates; you say that you are positive to a standardisation. All of my examples will be needing update (template move) with a team name change, so that is no issue in this discussion. I noticed, however, that you were the one who moved my third example, stating it to be "more descriptive". I agree with you on that, so either we choose the UCI-code or the team name it should contain the suffix; riders. UCI-codes changes less than team names (...i think!), but the team name is less ambiguous and more descriptive. Would you agree with me on changing all templates to my third example, and make the UCI-code as a redirect? lil2mas (talk) 13:42, 18 May 2011 (UTC)
Generally yes, I think it's a good idea. The trouble with the three-letter codes is that the UCI don't bother to try to make them unique against the IOC's list of three-letter country codes, which I think have more importance! I think a more descriptive name is better but of course template redirects mean we don't have to change any of the actual articles they are transcluded in. You could bring it up at WT:CYC but I don't think it's that controversial so just be bold :) SeveroTC 13:55, 18 May 2011 (UTC)
I agree; IOC > UCI. We could also end up with UCI-codes like CIA, FBI, NBA, etc.. So I will start moving the templates, and maybe post a notice on WT:CYC ;) Thanks, lil2mas (talk) 14:14, 18 May 2011 (UTC)
There's also possible scope for non-rider navigation templates in the near future, especially with the season articles we now have, which is why I favour suffixing them with riders (i.e. having {{Omega Pharma-Lotto seasons}} and {{Omega Pharma-Lotto riders}} templates). Warsaw Metro

Stadion metro station is in Stockholm and I can find no entry for Warsaw. The former naming convention was used to avoid such a potential conflict. I have changed the navbox to include Stadion Narodowy metro station and Dworzec Wileński metro station to match Polish Wikipedia. The line is not yet finished and they were both formerly red links. I have also corrected the stations template which is related to the succession boxes. Please watch that in any future renamings that all associated templates are adjusted. Thanks for your input. I will assume you don't have knowledge of Polish language - Warszawa Wileńska and Dworzec Wileński are two ways of expressing the same thing - it's like saying London Blackfriars or Blackfriars station. I would advise that if there were expressed reasons for having the previous naming convention then this would be written down within a naming convention (Wikipedia:Naming conventions (stations) isn't used). I was going to come back to both the stations you mention to make them better (in the first case find an unambiguous name, in the second add some information on the metro station part of the station) but as you can see they were in my last few minutes of editing yesterday so I had not yet had time. Ah! I've got the name thing now. I simply followed the names from Polish Wikipedia which has a separate article for the metro station and the railway station. According to official diagrams, the metro station (to be called "Dworzec Wilenski") will be built under Plac Wilenski near to the railway station, but not within the building. If you intend to integrate the two stations (like the Blackfriars example), I will need to fix the succession templates so that the metro station name points to the appropriate section of that railway station article. If not - I don't need to do anything. Will you include more information about Line 2 in the Warsaw Metro article? It needs to be expanded - and I don't know the language. That was a big move, of most of the stations in Poland, but you have created some consistency there now. Since you are doing this moving thing. Don't you think that Category:Warsaw Metro stops should be moved to Category:Warsaw Metro stations, to match most of the others under the parent Category:Rapid transit stations? It's next on my list after finishing the stations moving job, which arose, to be perfectly honest, because of the ghastly (PKP station) suffix. I don't know how the stops category name was chosen but it does sound wrong to me as well. I was thinking the Dworzec Wileński one to put the Warsaw Metro info in the existing article. I will try to write a bit more about Line 2 in the main article. And on Polish Wikipedia they sometimes write separate articles for platforms on the same station if they are used by different services, which just seems to lead to a doubling up of information and not particularly useful for the reader when the page isn't so long. BTW, on some of the station articles, it says that the owner is Zarząd Transportu Miejskiego - I have a feeling it might be Warsaw Metro - do you perhaps know off the top of your head? ZTM is the government agency that manages all public transport systems in Warsaw. Having an umbrella agency or department that oversees all of that stuff for the city is normal. English examples are the Passenger transport executives. Supertram (Sheffield) is operated by Stagecoach, but is owned by the South Yorkshire Passenger Transport Executive. Naming convention

If somebody creates a series of station articles all named in a particular manner, I am willing to accept it as the naming convention for that system. If they do the heavy work - I will give them a hand. You have changed all of the Warsaw Metro stations' titles and I hope you are willing to complete the job. Most metro systems worldwide use the convention "station name (system)". Look at a few large systems in major capital cities: Paris Métro, Berlin U-Bahn, Rome Metro, Moscow Metro, Delhi Metro, Washington Metro, São Paulo Metro. Looks like a naming convention to me - and there are many more examples. There are a few metro systems that simply use a suffix of "station" or "metro station", and that's OK, but the majority use the system name in brackets. I did not come here to debate what naming convention you chose to use. I came to help by fixing a few linking problems caused by the moves. Sw2nd (talk) 15:17, 15 June 2011 (UTC)

Sorry, didn't mean to be abrasive if I seemed that way - I was frustrated that there wasn't already something written down as it looks as though people gave up with Wikipedia:Naming conventions (stations) with all the American examples which perhaps are not representative of the rest of the world. You appear quite cooperative. I think you are searching for truth, the meaning of life or a better Polish station. I weighted the examples above towards major European capitals; Paris, Berlin, Rome and Moscow, with only one example each from Asia, North America and South America. Don't believe everything you read. I've seen several people write essays and instructions outlining how people should do things on Wikipedia, without every creating any substantial content themselves. It's an observation from life. Not a list

Despite being currently mostly a list, articles like Talk:Ministry of Culture and National Heritage (Poland) are not intended to be lists, and thus their assessment should be regular stub/start/etc., not list. It was an assessment based upon categorisation, i.e. Category:Lists of government ministers. Even so, I don't know why you raise it here: I think you are referring to four articles so it seems a bit odd that you raise it here instead of just fixing it. Oh well done now anyway.
