Healthcare Chatbot[edit]

Information Technology Applied to Nursing course is an introductory course that is designed to teach students how nursing science is integrated with computer technology and information science. Students are expected to take their existing computer skills and use them to create and develop healthcare information systems whilst growing their knowledge and skill set. This article will explain how this learning module assisted students in developing a healthcare chatbot. In this module they were instructed to personalize it using their chatbot using a JNC 8 Hypertension Guideline Algorithm as a guide. For Module five titled “Telehealth” students were provided a youtube tutorial video on how to build a chatbot with google dialogFlow. The purpose of this chatbot was to serve individuals dealing with hypertension or concerned with their blood pressure. Students were to create a dialog between patient and the healthcare chatbot that will help patients understand blood pressure reading and promote health lifestyle changes. The first step to build this chatbot was to give it a name that pertained to the project. Once the bot has a title, the creator will need to create intents, which are mapping conversation between a user’s queries and actions fulfilled by the software. The creator can also create “Default Welcome Intent” that will suggest training phrases. The training phrases are example phrases for what the end user might type. Students are given the option of choosing from preselected phrases provided by google or can customize their own. The student is to build a conversation implementing healthcare information as an answer to possible questions the end user may have. The conversation starts off with the chatbot gathering information about the patient, such as age, race, blood pressure goal and if there are any blood pressure related diseases. Following that, the chatbot will be programmed to ask for any prescribed medication and if there is medication adherence. In case there is no prescribed medication then chatbot will advise the patient to visit the doctor's office. In both instances, recommended healthy lifestyle change will be provided as an attempt to keep blood pressure under control. This critical skill falls under number 18 according to the Development and Psychometric Testing of the Technological Competency as Caring in Nursing Instrument, “The relationship of nurse and patient is fluid – involving teaching and learning. Nurses need to value and respect patients as knowledgeable about their own selves and care.

This exercise can be an example of how nursing professionals and computers can merge together to provide an alternative line of communication to meet the patient’s needs. This concept can be used when a patient walks into a hospital or clinic and possibly won't have to wait in line to speak with a receptionist, but give personal information via a chatbot. This is another alternative for scheduling appointments or a way for doctors to stay informed with their patients progress by prompting a chatbot to gather weekly health information. This critical skill is most related to statement number 16 on the Technological Competency rating,“Nurses need to assess patient health status, interpret healthcare data, and practice nursing within a caring perspective”.
