Hey

[edit]

Hey, I saw your edits on Genetic counseling, and I wondered if you you be willing to lend a hand with a little project this week. Wikipedia:WikiProject Medicine is trying to get at least one ref into every medicine-related article. The list is getting shorter, but we've still got a bit more than 100 to go, and the Wikipedia:WikiProject Unreferenced articles/Backlog drives/November 2024 ends in just less than a week. If you could add a source to even one or two of them, it would really help us out. Here's how to help:

  1. Pick an article from the list. Most of them are organizations, people, or other subjects that do not require any specialized medical knowledge.
  2. Find at least one reliable source and add it to the article.
  3. Remove or update any maintenance tags at the top of the article.
  4. Edit the list to mark off the item or leave some notes about it so the next person will know that this one is done. (Try editing the page in the visual editor, because it's much easier for tables.)
  5. That's all! Hopefully it'll take just five or ten minutes.

Also, if you ever need help with medicine-related articles, please feel free to put Wikipedia talk:WikiProject Medicine on your watchlist, and to join the discussion whenever you'd like. Thanks, WhatamIdoing (talk) 23:54, 24 November 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Frank Hird

[edit]

I was glad to see that you had written an article about Frank Hird, who was someone I appreciated a great deal during the short period that I knew him. I had looked for one or two years, but I didn't find one, probably because I didn't know his full name. He was on sabbatical in the Department of Biochemistry at Berkeley in about 1968, during the time I was a post-doc with Dan Koshland. He seemed to enjoy talking with me, as we did almost every day during coffee breaks. I was surprised at that, given his seniority and the fact that I'm not at all a chatty sort of person -- taciturn might be a good term, and I wondered sometimes why he was so friendly. I think that the main thing was that I was not American (I'm now British and French, but I was just British in 1968) and he could say things to me (for example about his communist sympathies) that he wouldn't say to an American. In your article you quote John F. Williams as saying that "he was a very tough character to talk to", but I found him very easy to talk to, easier than most people I have known. Athel cb (talk) 07:15, 25 November 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Athel, thank you so much for your kind message. I was very entertained and impressed with your user page. I see you're a more advanced wikipedia user than me, so if you can find any sources that can add more colour to the Hird article, I'd be grateful if you could improve the article. Or link them here and I will use them. Also if you have a better photo of Hird, that would be good, because the photo I found of him and another scientists in the NLA website isn't very good.
If you're interested, I've written articles on Hird's boss and mentor, Victor Trikojus, and their colleague, Jack Legge, who was a real communist! Sgroey (talk) 22:26, 26 November 2024 (UTC)[reply]
