Image tagging

Hi, you tagged a number of images as orphaned fair use, but in many of these cases none were actually being claimed for fair use. Please use {{subst:nsd}} and {{subst:nld}} instead for no source/no license respectively. Thanks. howcheng {chat} 00:50, 16 March 2006 (UTC)

Hey we share the same birthday!

Wow! I've never met anybody whose birthday is on 15th August too. Its great to have a birthday on Independence day so you always have a holiday, isn't it?

Copyright status of Image:Comoros FA.gif

I've added a template to indicate the copyright status of Image:Comoros FA.gif. Please check if it's appropriate. Chanheigeorge 09:52, 16 March 2006 (UTC)

Uploader notification

No there is no requirement to notify the uploader, but it's definitely considerate, as they are most likely going to be able to give the source and/or licensing (although sometimes the licensing they pick is wrong). Thanks. howcheng {chat} 16:41, 16 March 2006 (UTC)

RE:Image copyright problem with Image:Coruscant info.jpg

Thanks for uploading Image:Coruscant info.jpg. However, the image may soon be deleted unless we can determine the copyright holder and copyright status. The Wikimedia Foundation is very careful about the images included in Wikipedia because of copyright law (see Wikipedia's Copyright policy).

The copyright holder is usually the creator, the creator's employer, or the last person who was transferred ownership rights. Copyright information on images is signified using copyright templates. The three basic license types on Wikipedia are open content, public domain, and fair use. Find the appropriate template in Wikipedia:Image copyright tags and place it on the image page like this: {{TemplateName}}.

Please signify the copyright information on any other images you have uploaded or will upload. Remember that images without this important information can be deleted by an administrator. If you have any questions, feel free to contact me. Thank you. Shyam (T/C) 21:58, 8 March 2006 (UTC)

  • Hello Urshyam. I uploaded that from a scan of the book referenced to settle a dispute over the population of Coruscant as stated in the book. If this is not found to be fairuse, then I will allow it to be deleted under Wikipedia's laws. Thank you for notifying me on this matter. -- Riffsyphon1024 22:28, 16 March 2006 (UTC)
    • Riffsyphon1024, thanks for responding, but please let me know about the book's copyrights. Does author allow anyone for publicizing the material and images? If yes, then it can be considered as fair use. Regards, Shyam (T/C) 22:41, 16 March 2006 (UTC)
      • I would say that the author Kristin Lund would not like this but it was a small section used primarily for proof purposes. The book is here at Wookieepedia's article. -- Riffsyphon1024 23:03, 16 March 2006 (UTC)

Indonesia home garden image

Image:Indonesia_home_garden.jpg was originally uploaded by User:Erauch so the copyright issue should be taken up with him. I noticed this image copyright was not brought to his attention, though many others were. This suggests that wikimedia might benefit from a script that displays who uploaded what. Wikimedia needs to document how a source for media can comply with the copyright laws, given that many of these sources are small websites without resources but nevertheless with rights that should be upheld. Maybe wikimedia can enlist the associations that work in the copyright holder's interest to share some of the burden in documenting compliance procedures to help streamline wikipedians' work. Rtdrury 23:36, 16 March 2006 (UTC)

You left a note on User talk:Tommyllew regarding Image:DSCF0157.JPG: "I notice the 'image' page currently doesn't specify who created the content, so the copyright status is unclear. " However, he did note on the image page that the image was self-created. Dforest 03:25, 17 March 2006 (UTC) :From the image page: (del) (cur) 23:08, 5 October 2005 . . Image Copyright Tag

The copyright tags are very confusing to me, I've uploaded two pictures that didn't have them. I suppose they qualify under fair use but I don't remember what websites I found them on. The first image already got deleted, but the other one is still there, it's name is jacksonkellyguitars.jpg I just wanted you to know that I got your message about the picture, but I don't understand how to use the copyright tags. Ladysway1985 05:52, 17 March 2006 (UTC)

Re: Image:Jason schmidt2.jpg

Ah that was an upload I did as a relative newbie. I don't think it's fair use at all... I'm going to just go ahead and delete it. Thanks for catching it. --W.marsh 18:28, 17 March 2006 (UTC)

Howcheng

Howcheng seems to be taking a somewhat more expansive interpretation of what is legitimate. My view is that it is almost unheard-of for a newspaper to make any of its content free (after all, they make their whole living selling information), so in the absence of any concrete evidence otherwise, any newspaper bits we're using are non-free and only possible under fair use. I wouldn't get in a big fuss over specific images right now, anything that's fair use is going to get revisited multiple times, maybe even deleted en masse if Jimbo gets irritated. :-) Stan 19:37, 17 March 2006 (UTC)

Actually, I was just saying that {{orfud}} is inappropriate when the image hasn't even been claimed as fair use. {{nsd}} and {{nld}} are perfectly adequate and IMHO are acted upon a lot sooner than orphaned fair use images. howcheng {chat} 20:15, 17 March 2006 (UTC)

No, I don't think this qualifies as fair use for Icebreaker because there's no reason why we need this particular image to illustrate the article when there are enough free pictures of icebreakers available. Regards, howcheng {chat} 20:15, 17 March 2006 (UTC)

STOP sending me anymore copyright notices, WILL YOU?!!! Did you not see how many reminders I left behind to tell you ENOUGH is ENOUGH? Are you blind or what?
Those images were uploaded at a time when it was deemed acceptable if a user identified the source; that was before the defamation article last year. Countless hours were spend in uploading those pictures, including some that were scanned from local newspapers. There will be tons more notices to flood my user page if you stubbornly persist on doing what you are doing. Is it necessary? Are you a brainless robot or what? Can't you use a little bit of discretion? You are just an irritating bloody pain in the ass.
I have sought deregistration from this portal because of YOU and YOU alone, but was told it was not possible. In any case, they helped me to delete my user page and user talk page? Do you know that, MR IDIOT?!!!! — PM Poon 15:38, 18 March 2006 (UTC)

Jguk image

Hey, did you get a communique from User:Jguk that Image:Heath Streak (Warwickshire) about to bowl to Cook (MCC) at Lord's on 10 April 2005.JPG should be PD? If so, does it apply to his other untagged images too? Stan 14:16, 18 March 2006 (UTC)

Basically you can never assume PD (what if he wanted GFDL, or regretted putting previous images into the public domain?). We do have {{GFDL-presumed}} that some people use, althought I don't care for it much myself - better to take the pain of deleting the image and motivate somebody else to create a proper replacement. Dave Nellist Picture

You recently deleted this picture that I posted on the site - I am a member of the Socialist Party, and I know Dave Nellist - this picture is in the public domain:

and has no copyright.

I will be resubmitting it to the page - please find something more constructive to do with your time.

Orphanded fair use

Hi, please don't tag untagged images as "orphanded fair use" unless they are obviously unfree (magazine covers, obvious movie screenshots, logos and such). A "no license" and/or "no source" tag is more apropriate in most cases such cases, sure in most of the cases the image will end up deleted anyway because the uploader is no longer around to tag the images but it's best to use the right process anyway. I apreciate all the work you have been putting into image tagging lately, just be carefull to tag the images with the most apropriate template. Thanks. --Sherool (talk) 18:56, 18 March 2006 (UTC)

My sincere apologies

Hai Urshyam, sorry for being very rude. Yes, I did leave so many messages at the bottom of my talk page. I not only bolded it, I eventually also used the biggest fonts possible in Wikipedia, boxed it up and colored the frames bright red. Finally, I left a message that says, "Shyam, if you can't read this, you must be blind!" Imagine how exasperated I was!!

The reason why I did not leave a message on your talk page is because admittedly, you are not the only one sending me those messages. I thought that the bottom of the page would be the best location as anyone who wish to add a message would be able to see it very clearly. I forgot that one can also access the page by using the + button and bypass it.

I think I must have uploaded a few hundred pictures in those days when I was a Wikiholic. Can you imagine yourself eventually receiving a few hundred similar stock messages that flood your talk page until it is no longer useful? I was so addicted to Wikipedia in those days that I spent many nights without sleeping just to upload those pictures. And mind you, I never just upload. I improve the picture using Photoshop, modifying it at times to suit the context. Some have been scanned from local newspapers, and giving the poor quality, a lot of manual touch-up was involved. As far as I know, any piece of work where reasonable effort has been put in to alter it is not a copyright infringement. Even so, I always give the source where the images where taken.

I could not understand the many different types of copyright tags when I tried to learn them and thought that some kind soul would just add it for me if the source is given. However, cooperative effort seems to be lacking as far as images are concerned, quite unlike articles where they are snapped up eagerly and immediately, and mercilessly edited, for right or for wrong. Had the current practice on images been implemented then, I would not have bothered to waste my time. Unfortunately, it was not. Those images were uploaded over a period of time.

It had been a heart-rending experience for me in this portal, especially with some admins and editors from UK insisting that I must write the English way, when the sun has already set in England and English books are hardly available in my country. As far as I know, American English is acceptable in this portal. That was the reason why I eventually decided to leave the portal at the end of last year. However, I still come in once a while to take a look, but I no longer contribute.

Lastly, I wish to extend my heart-felt apologies for being so rude to you. I sought deregistration two days ago, but was told it was not possible. What they can do was help me to delete both my user page and talk page. Imagine how exasperated I was when I saw another message from you after my personal pages were "deleted"!!!

The misunderstanding arose because I thought that you had read the message I left behind and persisted on sending those messages as an act of sadism. Maybe I should have send you a personal message, but then again, I would have to send to quite a few admins and editors, and also to those others who have yet to come, but surely will in due time. What better place than to leave a big message, boxed it in red so that everyone could see? How mistaken was I!! — PM Poon 19:17, 18 March 2006 (UTC)

How to put a copyright tag?

Spencer Karter

Image you marked for deletion

I forget which one it was, but you marked on of the images for the band Holiday for deletion. I can't determine the copyright status of the picture b/c the site has been taken down, and I do not know how to contact the band. I don't think they're signed to a label, though, so it probably isn't copyrighted.

I see you deleted that image. It was, indeed, created by me, after hours of numerical integration on my computer. I didn't realise that I needed to tag it in any way, I didn't get any notification that it was in danger of being deleted, and now I don't seem to be able to get it back off Wikipedia's history. I don't seem to have a copy on my computer either. If that is the way that Wikipedia treats hours of work by volunteers, then I think I'll take my volunteering elsewhere. WIKIPEDIA HAS MY EMAIL ADDRESS FFS!!! What would it have cost to send me a quick note to say that my work was in danger of being deleted??? NOTHING!!! Chrisobyrne 11:38, 21 March 2006 (UTC)

OK - I've made the decision - I'm rescinding Wikimedia's right to ALL the work I did. Please help me delete my contributions to the pages below - 3753 Cruithne, Talk:3753 Cruithne, Comet Encke, Brown note, Archimedes, Image:DeathRayDiagram.gif, Talk:Cyclic redundancy check, Cyclic redundancy check, No man's land, Cruithne (people), Leap second, Transit of minor planets, Ophiuchus, Humanitarian response to the 2004 Indian Ocean earthquake, Sidereal astrology, Astrology, Almagest, Zodiac, Polaris, Astronomical transit, 239 BC, 66 BC, Julian year (astronomy), Occultation, Transit of minor planets, Star of Bethlehem, 12 BC, 11 BC, 1682, 2060s, 837. Note that when I forget to log in, my contributions appear under the IP address 62.77.166.6. Thanks - I know I can count on your help to remove useful contributions to Wikipedia, especially since those contributions (now that I've rescinded Wikipedia's rights) are in violation of copyright law. Chrisobyrne 11:51, 21 March 2006 (UTC)

Thank you for the reminder about my obligations and rights under the GFDL. I fully intend to delete all my work. And, given that I'm rescinding Wikimedia's right to my work to date, I expect Wikimedia to apply as much vigour to removing my work to date as it applied to removing the graph of the evolution of Cruithne's semi-major axis. Thank you. Chrisobyrne 12:09, 21 March 2006 (UTC)

Let me see if I understand correctly. What you are saying is that all contributions are under the GFDL, and therefore no contributions can be deleted. But my contribution WAS deleted. So, my contribution wasn't considered to be under the GFDL - I was required to make that clear. Yet I was not required to make clear that my textual contributions were under the GFDL - that was an assumption made by Wikimedia.

So let me introduce a nightmare ultimatum for Wikimedia. Either reinstate my image, or delete my textual contributions, or I will produce copyrighted copies of my textual contributions that predate their introduction onto Wikipedia. Your choice. Chrisobyrne 12:44, 21 March 2006 (UTC)

Of course I'm currently going to have to say that to the best of my knowledge, no such copyrighted material exists. (In other words, I believe I threw it out). However, I'm sure as hell going to go searching for it if my contributions are not deleted. Chrisobyrne 12:50, 21 March 2006 (UTC)

Thanks for the note on my discussion page. I've since added some questions around the other image I have on Wikipedia. I would appreciate answers. Thanks. Chrisobyrne 17:02, 21 March 2006 (UTC)

Thanks for the input. No I'm not convinced - I've since noticed that the current image upload page actually requires the uploader to specify the license. So I'm going to guess that I actually uploaded my second image under that upload page, explicitely specifying GFDL, whereas I uploaded my first one under it's predecessor, and that it's predecessor didn't ask for a license to be specified at upload time as clearly as the current one does. HOWEVER, I'm still not convinced that the page I used to upload the Cruithne diagram didn't ask me for some sort of warranty that there were no copyright issues with the image that I was uploading. If so, then it would appear that Wikimedia decided to reject my warranty, which is why I am asking that all warranties I have since given to Wikimedia receive the same treatment from Wikimedia. Also, the Cruithne diagram was an integral part of a document on the asteroid Cruithne that most definitely WAS under the GFDL. Now, to my mind, a "document" includes the diagrams that are used to illustrate what is being documented, therefore my diagram was under the GFDL by virtue of being an integral part of a GFDL-licensed document. Thanks for your patience and interest in this - I would like to find a better solution than the one I am proposing, but the one I am proposing is currently the only one that satisfies me. Unfortunately, for an image such as this, where the subject is foreign, and the website written in a foreign tongue, it is very difficult to determine and also very difficult to attain a copyright/permission from the location. Media copyright problem with Image:EMPEROR.MID, Image:H3224.GIF & Image:H3224020.GIF

Dear Urshyam:

All the .mid or pics I uploaded to Wikipedia are done by me and originated from my own will, not by any boss's or professor's command.

I don't know how to say I am the copyright owner and am willing to give it to the public domain in a short and formal way. That's why you see a strange sentence there.

Thank you for giving me the link to Wikipedia:Image copyright tags page. It is too long for me right now because I am busying on my thesis. I will try to read it about six months later, I think.

If you have time and are willing to put suitable copyright on the media I uploaded to wikipedia, please feel free to do that. Is this sentence entered by I myself enough for you to edit that (as the consideration about the copyright problem.)?

Image copyright problems with Image:Lauro.jpg, Image:Cuatro.jpg, etc.

Hello Urshyam. This is AVM.

I am a 60-year old Industrial Engineer from Venezuela. Through my lifelong profession is computer technology, I have a Diploma of Higher Studies in Classical Music, and I own and play seven (7) classical guitars, three of which are real vintage instruments, worth more than U.S. $8,000 apiece. I also play the piano and the flute.

As you may have suspected, I am slowly working on a personal project to publish a whole set of articles into the English and Spanish versions of Wikipedia, covering the life and works of VENEZUELAN MUSICIANS. I intend to write articles on Venezuelan music, too. Such list would necessarily have to cover Venezuelan musical instruments as well. My first contribution, ever, to the English Wikipedia was the article about Antonio Lauro, a much-admired and cherished national composer.

Information sources for such project are very varied and hard to find. I have a wealth of magazines, books, catalogs, record covers and leaflets, personal webpages, etc. I have a lot of scanning and editing to do. MOST OF THE MATERIALS AT MY REACH ARE UNSIGNED, UNPATENTED, UNREGISTERED, NOT COPYRIGHTED, having ANONYMOUS SOURCE or AUTHOR UNKNOWN.

On the other hand, Copyright Law in Venezuela is still in its cradle, fostered mostly by foreign companies that do business in this country. So is its actual practice. I have worked extensively in intellectual property activities, so I know about trademarks & patents to some degree. In this country you file copyrights for brand names of commercial, mass-produced goods, and that's it.

Believe me, when I have uploaded pictures to Wikipedia, I have done so having full awareness that THERE IS NO PENDING COPYRIGHT over such materials, so there is NO RISK WHATSOEVER that someone will claim any "rights" over such materials. Almost nobody (except perhaps some professional models, modeling agencies, and professional photographers, EVER take the trouble to copyright pictures in this country. Besides, what kind of a Venezuelan would object against such articles depicting our values being published in Wikipedia? I don't think that such a specimen exists.

Now you drop into the scene, threatening to DELETE the pictures that I have worked hard to find, edit, enhance and upload. I have some comments about your threats, but instead of throwing them at you, I will do my best to abide by Wikipedia standards and fulfill any requirements that may be missing. You have threatened to delete Arpallanera.jpg, Lauro.jpg, and Cuatro.jpg so far.

Antonio Lauro died in 1986. What do you want me to do, hunt down his widow or descendants or relatives, go to their homes, ring the bell, and ask for Antonio Lauro's photographs? I regret I do not have the time for that, no matter how much I would like to do so.

Urshyam, I appeal to your understanding. I am a very busy man, and I am doing this in my scant spare time, for love of my country and its rich cultural values. I request that you, or anyone else sharing your concerns or your urge, to be patient and give me some time to comply. Believe me, if you do delete some of those pictures, you would NOT be doing Wikipedia much of a service, you would be hampering its very objectives and higher goals.

Agreed??? Please respond ASAP.

Image tagging

I thought you have read the caption of the image. It's captured from a movie. You should tag it with a more concise template instead of deleting it, which is disgustingly undesirable. -- Jerry Crimson Mann 20:48, 22 March 2006 (UTC)

My image violations

Hi, I scanned in most of my images from library books - I thought that would make them OK to use as that is such a public place.

The Jess Stearn one I got from a website, but I thought that I had mentioned the source - is this not OK?

I am totally confused with images - how the hell does anyone ever get permission to use them?! Surely any image published on the Net is OK to use?

Please explain!!

Jaycey

Well, how do I modify the image so as to include the copyright data?

You want copyright data on Mosque.png -- how do I add it? I'm not sure what to edit. It's straightforward -- I made it, I gave it away. Zora 22:12, 22 March 2006 (UTC)

Portal India

Hi Shyam, Portal India is currently a Featured Portal Candidate (WP:FPCAN) and various objections have been raised, some relating to the selected article and selected picture stream. Can you please address points 2, 5 and 6? Per Wikipedia:What is a featured portal only high-quality and/or featured articles content needs to be displayed. Many of the selected articles are in need of copyediting and general cleanup. I think it is best that we stick just to featured articles relating to India for the time being. Can you provide your thoughts? Thanks AreJay 23:35, 22 March 2006 (UTC)

Shyam thanks for clarifying. It appears that User:Kirill Lokshin's (valid) objection relates to the file path of the selected articles stream. The current stream is located at Portal:India Today's Selected Article, while it should actually be Portal:India/Today's Selected Article. User:Ganeshk experimented to see if pages and sub-pages could be blanket moved; however this does appear to work. I think for now the best thing for us to do, is revert to the old format (i.e., without the streaming). After the nomination, we should set up a Portal:India/Today's Selected Article, where articles are voted for each week (similar to WP:INCOTW), as opposed to the present random selection format. I truly do recognize and appriciate the tremendous effort you have put into streaming articles, Shyam, but I feel at this point this is the only way for us to address Kirill Lokshin's concerns. If you have a simpler solution, of course, please reply on my talk page or on WP:FPCAN. Please let me know your thoughts. Thanks AreJay 00:36, 24 March 2006 (UTC)
Good job on moving the stream to the appropriate filepath. Based on your comments, I have modified Template:Indian selected to display the nominations page. I did not include the verbiage relating to "is one of the best articles on Wikipedia related to India"..because the question will be asked as to who decided that it was one of the best articles on Wikipedia, and how did they decide. Best to leave that out, IMO.
Other than that I think we need to build some awarenes on the nominations page. Although it is prominently displayed on Portal:India, I myself wasn't aware of it unitl you wikilinked it on my talk page. We will need to spread the word to admins and editors who regularly contribute to India related articles. AreJay 00:46, 25 March 2006 (UTC)
Shyam, great job on moving the selected article/picture pages to sub-pages under the India Portal. And the new wording on the selected article template looks good to me. I feel now that all subpages have moved under Portal:India, the older pages such as Portal:India Today's selected article must tagged for deletion. Your thoughts? - Ganeshk (talk) 01:02, 25 March 2006 (UTC)
Yes, I second this. Portal:India Today's selected article, Portal:India Picture of the week and associated subpages should now be tagged for deletion. Thanks AreJay 01:50, 25 March 2006 (UTC)

Mediation:Help

I expect some help for mediation. I have gone through all links. Should I need to contact the users on their talk pages to get involved them or should I start working on the mediation cabal cases page. From where should I start? I am very new to mediate. I haven't handled any case so far, please suggest how do I start? Thanks, Shyam (T/C) 17:16, 24 March 2006 (UTC)

First you should verify if the submitter has requested privacy. If this is the case you should probably send an email. If not you can verify the situation. How many disputants are there? How noisy are they? Do they prefer the talk page or have they already begun to discuss on the mediation page? If the talk page is too noisy but the disputants tend to use the talk page and ignore the mediation page you can invite them with {{DisputedMC}} or {{ActiveDiscussMC}} to use
Make sure to read and understand "Suggestions for mediators".
You should also analyze the situation. Is the dispute trivial or non-trivial? In a trivial dispute one side is in obvious violaton of official policy with their central demands. In this case it may be an error to try to make the other side change their position and aim for a compromise.
In a non-trivial dispute you can try to make the disputants agree on the need for mediation as a first step and build from their. What can the disputants agree on besides the need for mediation?
If the case requires expert knowledge you don't have it may also be a good idea to ask for outside assistance. --Fasten 17:49, 24 March 2006 (UTC)

Hi! Could you please point out specific portions that need great deal of work? I am asking you this because there are examples of a few articles that made it into India selected articles despite not meeting some croteria. For example, Kolkata, which was not even written in the Indian city format and lacked vital informations like geography, administration etc when it made it into the selected list. I know Satyajit Ray is a bit of messy, and does not look good. Do you think it is ok with the information content?--Dwaipayanc 06:34, 26 March 2006 (UTC)

Esperanza Newsletter, Issue #1

Reach out is a program aimed at allowing users to bring issues that they have had in Wikipedia to a listening, sympathetic and caring audience:
"No one can know how we feel if we do not say. We cannot expect to get understanding if we do not ask for it. No one will dispute that sometimes life's issues are too much for one person. It is fair to say that sometimes Wikipedia's problems fall under the same heading. This is a place where you can bring the bruises that can sometimes be got on this project for attention."
The Stress alerts program aims at identifying users who are stressed, alerting the community of thier stress and works in tandem with the Stressbusters at trying to identify causes of stress and eliminating them.
Note from the editor
Welcome to this new format of the Esperanza Newsletter, which came about during the last Advisory Council meeting - we hope you like it! The major changes are that each month, right after the Council meeting, this will be sent out and will include two featured programs and a sum up of the meeting. Also, it will be signed by all of the Advisory Council members, not just Celestianpower. Have an Esperanzial end of March, everyone!
  1. Future meetings are to be held monthly, not fortnightly as before.
  2. Bans and Access level changes (apart from autovoice) in the IRC channel are to be reported at the new log.
  3. In the IRC channel, there is going to be only one bot at a time.
  4. The charter requires members to have 150 edits and 2 weeks editing. Why this is the case will be clarified.
  5. A new Code of Conduct will be drafted by JoanneB and proposed to the Esperanza community.
  6. The NPA reform idea is to be dropped officially.
  7. Charter ammendments are to be discussed in future, not voted on.
  8. The Advisory Council is not going to be proposed to be expanded by the Advisory Council themselves, if others want to propose it, they will listen.
Signed...

Frog on the main page ?

Hi Shyam, following your note on my talk page, and my answer there, I have asked on Wikipedia talk:Featured articles if anyone had any idea what may have caused the early appearance of Frog on the main page; someone mentioned that screwiness with the clock (coinciding with European daylight savings time) has been reported on Administrator's noticeboard. This probably explains why I saw the article on the main page earlier than it was supposed to be. If I happen happen to be in front of my computer tonight at 0:00 UTC, I'll doublecheck that the correct FA is displayed. Cheers, Schutz 12:22, 27 March 2006 (UTC)

Don't give wrong licenses

Hello Urshyam,

I've noticed that you're tagging foreign images (made by other users and clearly licensed under the GFDL elsewhere), that don't have no license information here, as PD, e.g. [2] and [3].

Please don't do so. Better tag such files with "missing license" or alternatively ask the uploader. But do not presume to mark images as if they are in the public domain, if they aren't. In the present case the author definitely wants to be named if one of his images is used elsewhere, so "your" tag appears as something like a violation of his copyright. Do you understand, what I want to express? I know the author from de.wp as reliable, and presumably he has only forgotten the GFDL templates when uploading on en.wp assuming they were "automatically" going under GFDL in this project (however, the uploads happened before the license selector was introduced).

Phobos-Grunt copyright inquiry

Thanks for sending me the message; I am not entirely sure how to make a symbol indicating the copyright status such as the NASA one, but ESA does allow free use of this image:

re the map of Kurdistan

I only made some small modifications to that map, and I honestly don't know where it is from, or what the copyright status of it is. Jdforrester was apparently the one that uploaded it first, so maybe you could ask him re these issues. He should know more about it. -- Karl Meier 05:57, 29 March 2006 (UTC)

I am seriously confused about what is going on re that map. I just went back to take a look at it again, and now it seems like I just "reverted" it somehow. (Can't see that anything has changed though..) If I has made any kind of mistake I want you to know that this was never my intention, and I don't want to disrupt anything. Another thing is that I noticed that the map is also available at Commons, and that it has both a valid license and a source there: http://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Image:Kurdish_lands_92_cropped.jpg . Also, previously, the same information about source and copyright status was available in the version that was uploaded to the english wikipedia, but for some reason it was deleted by an anon with this edit: [4].
If I am not mistaken, maybe the best action now would be to ask an admin to delete the map that was uploaded to the English Wikipedia, so that the commons version would become available? -- Karl Meier 19:30, 29 March 2006 (UTC)

image and copyright

Shyam,

You left a message on my talk page about possible (and now, apparently, actual) deletion of image gd0.jpg, which had been on my talk page.

I wonder if you looked at the image, or if you're just plowing through tags? The image is a takeoff on the various "language ability" boxes that users (like you) have on their personal pages. As the alt tag on the image says (or said), in Scottish Gaelic, "my grandfathers and grandmothers spoke Gaelic."

I suppose it's a derivative work from whatever the original language-ability box is, but that's what specialists call a thin copyright at best. Have you filled out the copyright release for each of the language boxes on your own page?

I did think the image, uploaded last August, HAD been tagged properly: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Image:Gd0_grandparents_spoke_gaelic.jpg ... but then, I'm not a Wikipedia insider.

--OtherDave 13:35, 30 March 2006 (UTC)

Shyam,

I have left the links and NASM / NASA sources for the photos used in the James Van Allen article. This is the second query over the past 3 months. What appears to be the "perceived" problem of the NASA source for Wiki??

Remember that at this time (early 1958) that NACA, JPl and Army were separate organziatons that were merged into NASA (July 1958) with Congressional legislation and Eisnenhower (presisdnetal signatiure) approval. You will have to be much more specific here - "What's the issue?" - you can see in NASA archives, etc. --G. Beat 14:45 30 March 2006

I have read the NASM statement, this does not agree with the NASA statement (gov't financed - and used extesively throughout Wikipedia - thousands of photos). I do have a second source I will check - since I am a graduate of the University of Iowa -- and will check their NASA and Iowa photo archives -- the original photo may have actually come from them -- in which case -- we again have differing statements.

--G. Beat 18:15 30 March 2006

photo copyright

I don't mind putting a copyright tag on a photo, but the photo you marked was on my talk page! A personal photo taken from my balcony. It is NOT part of an article! Are you perhaps a bit too obesessed with Wikipedia? Or are you suggesting that others may see that photo on my talk page and incorporate it into an article? Possible, I suppose. I already gave all of the information I have on the image page itself. I scanned it, I don't know who the copyright holder is, though. So it can and should be used for fair use, but I don't know which. so if you do, then please put the proper tag.

No, i'm sorry, it didn't come from a newspaper, it came from on a piece of paper, which was scanned from some book, but I have no clue what the book is. I got the paper from a lecture I attended several years ago. Maybe book source would work?--MateoP 00:32, 31 March 2006 (UTC)
