Hi Dori,

I was not trying to advertise, I was providing links back to pages that I thought would be helpful to those researching the subjects of the pages that I added the links to. I thought this would be useful since not only do the links provide an image of the building, but we also include georeferences, which indicate on a modern-day map where these buildings once stood. There are also inscriptions by the artist of the watercolors describing certain details about the buildings, such as notable people who visited, changes in ownership, etc. I (and others at the Historical Society) figured people might find these details interesting, so this is why we added them to Wikipedia. Is there anything I could do differently if my links came off looking like an advertisement for the Historical Society? Thanks. Simackh (talk) 15:54, 14 February 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Well, in many cases there is additional information about the specific image(s) and the location I am linking to. This information is periodically updated as projects are completed. Additionally, I do not have permission to post the actual images to Wikipedia. The information on the links also contains access to other information at the historical society that is relevant to the building/place/person but not necessarily the Wikipedia article. There is often too much information and in most cases copyright restrictions that make it not possible to add the info to the main article. I don't see how posting these links is unacceptable when it seems to fall under the category of "information that could not be added to the article for reasons such as copyright or amount of detail, or other meaningful, relevant content that is not suitable for inclusion in an article for reasons unrelated to its accuracy," as stated on the External Links guidelines page, or "Sites that contain neutral and accurate material that is relevant to an encyclopedic understanding of the subject and cannot be integrated into the Wikipedia article due to copyright issues, amount of detail (such as professional athlete statistics, movie or television credits, interview transcripts, or online textbooks), or other reasons," under "What Can Normally Be Linked" on the same page.
