Some thoughts[edit]

After writing Joseph Priestley, which has been the most difficult page I have written on wikipedia, and after rewriting the second half of Mary Wollstonecraft after I had finished all of the pages on her works, and after some discussion with another editor about pages that have spin-off articles, I have come to the conclusion that it is more efficient and easier to write the spin-off articles of a main article first. It is much easier to summarize pages that are already written. I offer this as a suggestion only because it was a painful lesson. I would completely understand if you don't want to do this, but I thought I would propose this option. Let me know your thoughts. Awadewit | talk 02:47, 17 October 2007 (UTC)[reply]

  • I tend to agree. I have not worked more on the "overarching narrative" for the "Reception and literary criticism" section or the "Juvenilia" section because working on the sub-pages first seemed to be the right approach. (Not having enough time also was a factor.) Simmaren 12:05, 17 October 2007 (UTC)[reply]
  • So the articles we need to write before we finish JA are, at the very least:
As I am done reading and almost finished posting my notes, perhaps I will start working on the "Reception" article. I feel most confident about that one. I don't think I can do the "Family" one since I haven't read all of the biographical material. Let me know what you think. Awadewit | talk 00:05, 18 October 2007 (UTC)[reply]
  • A-o.k. I'll wrestle you for Juvenilia when the time comes. :) Simmaren 02:21, 18 October 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Conceptualizing Austen page[edit]

I'm struggling to conceptualize the Austen page at this moment. So much of the criticism goes novel-by-novel, which we obviously cannot do. We will have to take great care not to get bogged down in details, I think. Awadewit | talk 02:51, 17 October 2007 (UTC)[reply]

  • I've started thinking about this too. I think we will have to distill the novel-by-novel criticism for points that apply generally to Austen's work. (The novel-by-novel criticism will be important to have if we are able to face up to reworking the articles on the individual novels after JA is launched into the world.) This may be hard. Simmaren 12:05, 17 October 2007 (UTC)[reply]
  • I feel that this is going to be the hardest part of all. :) Awadewit | talk 00:06, 18 October 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Footnote style[edit]

MLA style is fine. I will have to retool, but that's not a problem. Simmaren 12:05, 17 October 2007 (UTC)[reply]

  • It's the one I know by heart. I don't have to look anything up. I hope that's ok. Awadewit | talk 00:06, 18 October 2007 (UTC)[reply]
  • By the way, I usually use a wiki-hybrid for citation. MLA for the bibliography and [author, page] for the footnote. Works well, I think, and there have been no FAC problems with it. I used to use full-out MLA or Chicago in the notes, but there was actual opposition to that. Awadewit | talk 00:08, 18 October 2007 (UTC)[reply]
  • I will study your practice and perhaps some other material on MLA citation, as soon as I can. My ingrained citation habits are decades out of date, of course. Please forgive me my various trespasses until I get the hang of it. Simmaren 02:16, 18 October 2007 (UTC)[reply]
  • We will have an enormous task later on making everything we're working on consistent in footnote style and in other ways. I'm normally very good at that (it's part of my professional equipment) but I'm going to have been too involved in this to have the needed fresh critical eye. We will have to bring in others to help us when the time comes. I believe you have a stable of "old reliables?" Simmaren 02:16, 18 October 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Random thoughts[edit]

  • Is Roger Davies our nominee for translator? :) Simmaren 12:05, 17 October 2007 (UTC)[reply]
  • It seemed like the prudent thing to do. Awadewit | talk 00:08, 18 October 2007 (UTC)[reply]
  • I will add similar "Draft" banners to the head of our subpages. Seems like a good idea. Simmaren 12:05, 17 October 2007 (UTC)[reply]
  • I copied it from someone else. :) Awadewit | talk 00:08, 18 October 2007 (UTC)[reply]
