Fifer[edit]

I recently stumbled upon the word fifer in an News24 article, about a cricket player who managed to take five wickets in one game, and thought that it should have been spelled 'fiver'. I e-mailed the editor who assured me that if a person takes five wickets in one game it is called a fifer. I have searched this word on the internet, but cannot trace it anywhere, except for the word fifer which means the person who plays a fife (musical instrument).

Is the editor right?
