Some common sense Dos and Don'ts:
  Do be bold
  Do assume good faith
  Do be civil
  Do keep cool!
Do maintain a neutral point of view
  Don't spam
  Don't infringe copyright
Don't edit where you have a conflict of interest
  Don't commit vandalism
  Don't get blocked
If you need further help, you can:
  Ask a question
or you can:
  Get help at the Teahouse
or even:
Ask an experienced editor to "adopt" you

Alternatively, leave me a message at my talk page or type {{helpme}} here on your talk page, and someone will try to help.

There are many ways you can contribute to Wikipedia. Here are a few ideas:
  Fight vandalism
Be a WikiFairy or a WikiGnome
  Help contribute to articles

  Perform maintenance tasks
Become a member of a project that interests you
  Help design new templates

Remember to always sign your posts on talk pages. You can do this either by clicking on the button on the edit toolbar or by typing four tildes ~~~~ at the end of your post. This will automatically insert your signature, a link to this (your talk) page, and a timestamp.
The best way to learn about something is to experience it. Explore, learn, contribute, and don't forget to have some fun!

To get some practice editing you can use a sandbox. You can create your own private sandbox for use any time. Perfect for working on bigger projects. Then for easy access in the future, you can put {{My sandbox}} on your userpage.

Sincerely, Patrick. ツ Pdebee.(talk)(guestbook) 08:31, 1 November 2016 (UTC)   (Leave me a message)[reply]

Correct article entry (GOCE)[edit]

Hello. Thanks for your edit, but you would do well to properly register the article's title on the Drive's signup page. Place the title within the square brackets "[[ ]]" of the "Working/Completed" template and also put in the number of words in the article within the parentheses "( )". You can obtain the word count by installing this script – there are installation and user instructions on that page. If you have any difficulties, feel free to holler! – BroVic (talk) 15:54, 1 November 2016 (UTC)[reply]

A cookie for you![edit]

I thought I'd say, Hi! I'm also a new editor this year, taking part on the November copyedit drive – it's great to see our names up on the leaderboard! If I could offer a fellow-newcomer's perspective, it's good to be bold; everyone at Wikipedia is an equal editor, and newcomers like us are encouraged to get involved and make improvements where we can. I took on copyediting to better my writing skills and attention to detail. To me, copyediting is more about quality than quantity, and involves being very nit-picky about tiny details.

Wikipedia has its own particular style, developed for accessibility and clarity. Rather than figuring all of it out myself, I found it was a lot easier to borrow from the wisdom of the millions of editors who came before me, collected in many guidelines, help files, essays and tutorials. Wikipedia:WikiProject Guild of Copy Editors/How to has a good directory of these for copyediting (I particularly found Tony1's tutorials very helpful). I usually keep the Manual of Style and a half-dozen of its subpages open for reference while copyediting. The Missing Manual might be of more general interest.

I'm just another editor and not particularly experienced at this. But I feel it might be worthwhile to review your copyedits for anything you might have missed – I don't want to see you knocked off the leaderboard for not meeting "acceptable standards". You can request a check on the drive's talk page. Or, for what it's worth, I'm around if you'd like to ask me anything. – Reidgreg (talk) 15:45, 10 November 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Hi again! I reviewed the first dozen of your copyedits on the November Drive and cleaned them up a little. I noticed that Lfstevens and Twofingered Typist have also done edits on them. So the community is there for you, to help support your work. You can view the page histories on those articles to see what we changed, and we'll be around if you have any questions. Want to help shape the future of the Wikipedia editing experience?[edit]

Hi SkittleCookie22,

The Design Research team at the Wikimedia Foundation is currently seeking relatively newcomer Wikipedians for user studies about their experience with current editing tools and to test out some prototype editing tools. If you’re interested in helping to shape the future of editing on Wikipedia, we would love to have you participate! The study session will take approximately 30 minutes, maximum of 45 minutes.

The study will take place in the next couple weeks, and will require participants to have access to a webcam and microphone (or a laptop with built in cam & mic), with a quiet place to go for a research session. To participate, please email dchen[at]wikimedia.org and include the following information:

  • Username
  • Email where we can reach you
  • Your city or time zone
  • Best time to talk to you

Please let me know if you have any questions! Look forward to hearing from you.

Sincerely,

Daisy Chen
