WP L&O Review[edit]

Hi there, SlaidCoppage! My name is Arial and I am a member of the Wiki Project Limnology & Oceanography. Just to give a bit of background on myself, I am a freshwater ecologist. I have read through your Wikipedia article on Pine Lake, and have provided some review comments below for you to consider.

  • First, I would like to compliment you on taking on a completely new page! Wisconsin is my home state, so I was excited to see your contributions to this new page. Overall, the language was clear and written in fact-based language. There were appropriate sources cited throughout (though see comments below related to ensuring they are for the correct location).
  • Second, my main comment is that I had some confusion on which lake is being described, and where the lake is located. In both the main article text and in the Infobox, there is information about Pine Lake (in Springwater WI) as well as a Crawford Lake (in Ontario). Based on the citations, I am assuming that this page should actually be describing Crawford Lake. If this is the case: 1) the article title should change to “Crawford Lake”, and 2) make sure that you omit the incorrect location information throughout your page, and 3) Make sure that any information (e.g., invasive species) on the incorrect lake is removed from the article. Once you pin down the lake, this will probably make it easier to fill in information related to the lake’s origin and history, physical aspects, biological wildlife, etc., for this specific lake, and you can change the links in the Gallery.
  • Relatedly, it was great to see that you included an infobox on the page. As noted in the comment above, the coordinates and map on the display might be incorrect, giving a map of a Crawford Lake located in Ontario Canada. To fix this, please check that you are describing the correct lake in the main article text, and then make sure that you enter in the correct coordinates. If this article is on Pine Lake, the coordinates should be: 44°13'58.9"N 89°09'43.5"W. If this article is meant to describe Crawford Lake, the coordinates are correct.
  • The definition provided for “holomictic” is not entirely correct as written, as “holomictic” lakes are defined by the presence of lake thermal “mixing”. Broadly, holomictic lakes are evenly mixed at least once a year, but are otherwise stratified by temperature (check out the Lake Stratification page for more information: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lake_stratification). I suggest changing the text to something along the lines of: “X Lake is holomictic, which means that while the lake can be thermally stratified, there are periods of time during the year where water temperature is evenly dispersed throughout the lake”. Then, you can also that because of the lake mixing patterns, this particular lake has sedimentary layers on the bottom (varves) that can be used to document the history of the region.
  • Finally, much of the text related to the pollen analysis and pre-European colonization could be moved to the “origins and history” section, if this is referencing the correct lake.
