Vanakkam Sobanbabu.b - a quick point on the Thai Pongal versus Tamil New Year (April) issue. The case is before the Tamil Nadu high court as we speak which is expected to deliver a judgement on the matter in February/March. Litigants had contested the decision of the Karunanidhi administration to change the date of the Tamil new year. Fyi.

We will need to both polish up the Thai Pongal text. Once again, we would need to balance the harvest festival with the solar significance. I see that your latest revision tried to do that. If possible it would be good if we move part of the Makara Sankranti discussion up and leave the remainder of your edits intact - minus of course the Tamil new year part - since the matter is being contested in courts. Further, in Tamil Sri Lanka, Thai Pongal is strictly a harvest festival dedicated to the sun god. There is no talk whatsoever of it being confused with the new year there.

Anpu Sobanbabu

Unkal kadithatukkum chintanaikaluk-kum mikka nanri :-)

While I do not agree with you completely, I hear you. We need to have your views incorporated. We also need to prune down the text.

Why not we retain your version of the text but have the makara sankranti wording in the third paragraph and not the last paragraph as you have done. If this be the case, why not you incorporate it accordingly and I will polish up the language (not substance) next week.

There is a reason why Thai Pongal always falls on Makara Sankranti every year. They are not just similar festivals, they are two versions of the same event. It is the Tamil Nadu version of Makara Sankranti just as Lohri is the Punjab version of the event. The rituals differ. I agree.

But it is a harvest event in several parts of India. In Andhra and parts of Kerala, they do have the cooking of the new rice concept dedicated to the sun god. The Sinhalese in Sri Lanka have it too but stretched anytime in January. They call is Aluth Sahal Maangalya where the new rice is dedicated to the Buddha. And the solar symbolism (change in the direction of the sun northwards) exists throughout India, including Tamil Nadu and Tamil Sri Lanka.

I agree with you vis-a-vis the paragraphs on 'domestic cattle' and 'cultural significance'.

So while we need to shorten the entire text, would the suggestion above be a compromise? Oru kezhvi?
