Solace for the Children[edit]

Brief Summary Solace for the Children is an NGO serving physical and educational needs of children affected by war. Their mission is building peace on a foundation of health by establishing international partnerships providing medical care, education and leadership development for the children of war-torn countries. Solace offers medical services, including a US travel program, for children in need of care they cannot access in their own country. Educational programs cater to the patient alumni and volunteers that further enrich participants’ quality of life.

Solace for the Children’s vision is that youth who suffer as a result of war or living in a war-torn area be provided with a promising future. Many of the children and families served have lost hope of a healthy future or “normal” life. Children receiving the services have often quit school or disengaged from society because of ailments or appearances. The first step is healing them physically. Once recovered, the next step is reintroducing them to opportunity through education. Because these youth are often in areas where access to education is limited, Solace for the Children creates alternative solutions that allow them access to optimum education. Though the work may seem that is completed on a small scale as the assistance Solace provides is high cost and labor per child, the impact is great. In FY13, Solace for the Children has served more than 400 children through medical and educational programs. Each of these youth were afforded a brighter future and will move through life with the humbling knowledge that the generosity of others allowed them to do so.

ORGANIZATION HISTORY & PROGRAM INFORMATION History and Mission It was established in 1997, Solace for the Children is “building peace on a foundation of health.” Beginning as an organization providing for youth from Belarus affected by the Chernobyl disaster, in 2007 Solace shifted their focus to providing medical care, education and leadership development for the children of war-torn countries.

Much of the organization’s resources are directed toward mobilizing volunteers who provide medical services and housing solutions for youth traveling to the US for medical care they cannot receive in their country. The programs are based on the Children as Zones of Peace ideology that “children are a 'conflict-free zone’ and should be protected from harm and provided with essential services that ensure their survival and well-being.” Solace for the Children began with an initial intent of healing, but soon realized the work creates opportunities for peace. Motivated by the commitment to the quality of life for the patients and patient alumni, Solace has developed a Peace House Academy, the education and outreach component of their offerings.
