Welcome[edit]

Hello, SonnyHopson, and welcome to Wikipedia! Thank you for your contributions.

I notice that one of the first articles you created appears to be an article about yourself. This is a common mistake made by new Wikipedians—as this is an encyclopedia, we wouldn't expect to have an article about every contributor. Your user page, however, is a great place to write about yourself. Just click your user name at the top of the screen when you are logged in, and edit it normally.

The page you created about yourself has been or will shortly be speedily deleted from Wikipedia, but if you want to use the content from it, don't hesitate to ask anyone from this list and they will copy it to your user page.

If you are stuck, and looking for help, please come to the New contributors' help page, where experienced Wikipedians can answer any queries you have! Or, you can just type {{helpme}} on your user page, and someone will show up shortly to answer your questions. Here are a few other good links for newcomers:

I hope you enjoy editing here and being a Wikipedian! Please sign your name on talk pages using four tildes (~~~~); this will automatically produce your name and the date. If you have any questions, check out Wikipedia:Where to ask a question or ask me on my talk page. Again, welcome! ⇔ ÆS dt @ 02:59, 15 November 2008 (UTC)[reply]

You wrote: I am creating the Sonny Hopson page however I am not Sonny, I just used his name as a user.

Oh. In that case, there's not an autobiography issue, but there are two things you should be aware of - nothing we can't take care of, though. Thanks for writing me. I can walk you through everything we need to work out to make a great article.

The first thing is that on wikipedia, it's against our username policy to use a username that implies you're a real person other than who you really are, so you can't use another person's name. We need to take care of that, but it's not something we can't fix.

That is why we usually assume it's an autobiography when the username matches the article name, though. The other thing you should be aware of is our biography notability policy and our verifiability policy which basically boils down to one big point: for someone to be a subject of an article in wikipedia, they need to have been the subject of some coverage in (multiple, independent) secondary sources. When someone writes an autobiography here and says they are "one of the pioneers" or their "rhythmic style set a new standard" we tend not to take it too seriously. You'd be surprised how often we get autobiographies like that. ;) The same idea holds true, though, even when it's not an autobiography. Statements usually should be sourced from secondary sources like newspapers or magazines that said things like that before wikipedia did, and wikipedia is just repeating them. Wikipedia doesn't publish original research.

So, I'd ask you to take care of two things:

  1. Most important Please request to change your username, by going here: Wikipedia:Changing username and following the instructions.
  2. Then, please look over the policies and add the relevant sources and the discography information to the Sonny Hopson article to meet our notability and verifiability policies.

Hopefully I didn't overwhelm you, there. If you have any questions, feel free to message me again on my talk page. I also pulled my tags off that article to give us time to get everything figured out. ⇔ ÆS dt @ 03:34, 15 November 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Update: I am heading off to bed for the night. I have an oral examination at my college tomorrow, so I'm calling it early. I'll be back on tomorrow. If you get this tonight, I would go ahead and change the username as soon as possible. If you need help, you can always put {{helpme}} on this talk page with a question and someone will come by and help you out. Talk to you later. ⇔ ÆS dt @ 04:07, 15 November 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Following up (Username change + article help)[edit]

Hello for today. I checked up on your name change request at Wikipedia:Changing username, and it looks like the bureaucrat didn't accept the change request because the name you requested to change to WebRX is a company name. So, the name issue is still open and you still need to put in a new name change request, or reply to the existing one explaining why it's not the company name WebRX but rather something different that the name means.

As for the article Sonny Hopson, it looks like, even though I pulled my tags off it, someone else tagged or deleted it anyway. If you don't have a copy of what you had written so far, you can contact any of the administrators listed here who can get you a copy of the page as it was before it was deleted. I'm not an administrator, so I don't have access to do that.

The article was what we call speedily deleted because it didn't claim its subject was notable. That happens when the text of the article doesn't specifically claim the subject of the article meets the criteria in one of our notability guidelines.

Based on what you said on my talk page, Mr. Hopson is definitely a notable individual, and definitely qualifies for inclusion on wikipedia under the general notability guideline if nothing else, because there are multiple newspaper articles. (Other possible policies are WP:BIO, for biographies, or WP:MUSIC, for musicians. These are more specific than WP:N, the general guideline. A person only has to meet one policy to merit inclusion.)

I would recommend you re-create the article. When you say he was a top DJ, though, I would instead recommend you say he was called a top DJ by such-and-such newspaper in such and such a year. I would also discuss whatever else the newspaper articles you have discuss and say he was covered by them for it. That way, the article can't and won't be speedily deleted.

If you like, a good guide on citing sources is at Wikipedia:Citing sources. There are also some Wikipedia:Citation_templates that take care of standard-format citations the easy way.

I hope that helps, and good luck.

And, please, take care of that username. It's something that really needs to get resolved. Thanks. ⇔ ÆS dt @ 03:50, 16 November 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Re: Sonny Hopson[edit]

  • Yes, I did delete the page. I did it because someone tagged it for speedy deletion. The page has several problems that violate Wikipedia policies and guidelines. I'll try to explain them below:
  1. WP:CSD#A7 (this is the major issue that got the article deleted), the article didn't explain why the subject was notable (or more easily said: required inclusion). To get an idea what makes a musician/band or DJ notable, please take a look at WP:MUSIC and try to explain why he meets as many of the listed criteria as possible by including the information that proves it in the article.
  2. WP:COI, based on your username, it seems you are writing an article about yourself. If you're adhering to all the rules, it doesn't have to be a problem, but you seemed to have a problem adhering to follow the neutral point of view policy. "cool sounding rapid rhythmic style" is an opinion and should not be mentioned in the article.
  3. WP:RS, the article is missing reliable sources. Wikipedia only publishes information that has been covered before somewhere else. You cannot include information you know to be true if others can't verify it. Unfortunately, we can't rely on your word as a source, because you won't be around all the time to answer questions and there is no way for us to check what you say is actually true. Instead get the information from books, magazine, newspapers and reliable websites.

I hope these tips will help you on your way. - Mgm|(talk) 10:15, 16 November 2008 (UTC)[reply]

  • Sorry, I didn't notice someone else was helping you solve these issues. If they agree, I'll send you a copy of the article so you can work on it until it's ready. - Mgm|(talk) 20:03, 16 November 2008 (UTC)[reply]
  • They just agreed. I'll drop you message with the link. If you continue to follow their tips, you should have a solid article in no time. - Mgm|(talk) 20:32, 16 November 2008 (UTC)[reply]
  • The article is now located at User:SonnyHopson/Sonny Hopson for you to work at. - Mgm|(talk) 20:37, 16 November 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Temporary page to work on: User:SonnyHopson/Sonny_Hopson. (+ Username followup)[edit]

Dear Charles: I talked to User:MacGyverMagic about what's been going on, and what I knew about the subject of the article that wasn't in the article yet (from what you told me), and he restored it to a page under your user page. That means nothing is lost, and we can work on it until it's ready and meets all the encyclopedia's inclusion guidelines, then, when it's ready and won't get anyone else to tag it for deletion, we can move it to the main article space. The reason it's in what's known as your user space, and not the main article space is that if it goes in the main article space as it is, it'll probably be tagged by one of our millions of users that doesn't know about our conversation, and again deleted by one of our thousands of administrators, that again has no idea about what work we're doing. Working on it in the userspace keeps that from happening while we make it something we don't have to worry about getting deleted.

So, we just need to start back up where we left off.

And, we still need to figure out that username. ⇔ ÆS dt @ 21:03, 16 November 2008 (UTC)[reply]
