Your edits to Swallows and Amazons

[edit]

You may see that your edits have been changed or deleted, please do not take this personally. There are some Wikipedia rules which drive other editors to remove some content.

For example, Wikipedia has strict rules about self promotion and so people are not allowed to make links to their own web site or one that is closely linked to them. If I or someone else were to do it, then it might be acceptable if the site was considered to be a reliable source.

In addition links to other websites are generally discouraged in Wikipedia unless they are part of a reference to confirm a fact or are a major source of information on the basic topic. So a link to the Arthur Ransome Society may well be acceptable, but one to the Sailing Swallow site may not for Swallows and Amazons. Sometimes this depends on an individual editor's opinion and what I may think is OK might not be acceptable for someone else. I hope that you will keep editing and enjoy being part of the Wikipedia comunity. Dabbler (talk) 19:43, 18 May 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Welcome to Wikipedia. Everyone is welcome to contribute constructively to the encyclopedia. However, the username you have chosen (Sophieneville) seems to imply that you are editing on behalf of a group, company or website.

There are two issues with this:

  1. It is possible that you have a conflict of interest. In keeping with Wikipedia's neutral point of view policy, you must exercise great caution when editing on topics related to your organization.
  2. Your account cannot represent a group of people. You may wish to create a new account with a username that represents only you. Alternatively, you may consider changing your username to avoid giving the impression that your personal account is being used for promotional purposes.

Regardless of whether you change your name or create a new account, you are not exempted from the guidelines concerning editing where you have a conflict of interest. For information on how to contribute to Wikipedia when you have a conflict of interest, please see our frequently asked questions for organizations. Thank you. I am assuming that you are actually Sophie Neville, and not a company or organization representing her. As someone with an interest in Arthur Ransome and Swallows and Amazons, I do know who Sphie Neville is.
Wikipedia frowns on individuals writing autobiographical articles as they can easily deviate into self-promotion, especially if you have a commercial interest to push. It would not be acceptable if an article about Sophie Neville was written by User:sophieneville as that would be considered a major conflict of interest. Someone else could write the article but Wikipedia articles also require a degree of notability either for one significant and important event or achievement or for a lifetime of achievement. All articles must have some documented and reliable sources for the facts and opinions stated, not just what an individual "knows".
I would be willing to look over what you have prepared and see if I could write it into an article that would meet Wikipedia standards without being in a conflict of interest. That would mean me being able to review not only the article but also the references etc. You could make a draft available in your User space sandbox e.g. write it in User:sophieneville/Sophie Neville (just click on the link to open up the blank page and start writing) where I could look at it. I see you have already done what I suggested above! Good start, allow me to review it and I will get back to you. Dabbler (talk) 19:58, 16 August 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Yes please - I would appreciate any revisions and suggestions! The facts I have included concern subjects I find Swallows and Amazons fans are interested in when I give a talk. A tag has been placed on your user page, User:Sophieneville/Sophie Neville, requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done under section G11 of the criteria for speedy deletion, because the page appears to be advertising which only promotes or publicises someone or something. Promotional editing of any kind is not permitted, whether it be promotion of a person, company, product, group, service, belief, or anything else. This is a violation of our policies regarding acceptable use of user pages — user pages are intended for active editors of Wikipedia to communicate with one another as part of the process of creating encyclopedic content, and should not be mistaken for free webhosting resources or advertising space. Please read the guidelines on spam, the guidelines on user pages, and, especially, our FAQ for Organizations.

If you think this page should not be deleted for this reason, you may contest the nomination by visiting the page and clicking the button labelled "Contest this speedy deletion". This will give you the opportunity to explain why you believe the page should not be deleted. However, be aware that once a page is tagged for speedy deletion, it may be deleted without delay. Please do not remove the speedy deletion tag from the page yourself, but do not hesitate to add information in line with Wikipedia's policies and guidelines. If the page is deleted, and you wish to retrieve the deleted material for future reference or improvement, then please contact the deleting administrator.
