Notability of Skanqué de Belfast

[edit]

A tag has been placed on Skanqué de Belfast requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done because the article appears to be about a person, group of people, band, club, company, or web content, but it does not indicate how or why the subject is notable: that is, why an article about that subject should be included in an encyclopedia. Under the criteria for speedy deletion, articles that do not indicate the subject's importance or significance may be deleted at any time. Please see the guidelines for what is generally accepted as notable. If this is the first page that you have created, then you should read the guide to writing your first article.

If you think that you can assert the notability of the subject, you may contest the deletion by adding {{hangon}} to the top of the page (just below the existing speedy deletion or "db" tag), coupled with adding a note on the article's talk page explaining your position, but be aware that once tagged for speedy deletion, if the article meets the criterion it may be deleted without delay. Please do not remove the speedy deletion tag yourself, but don't hesitate to add information to the article that would confirm the subject's notability under Wikipedia guidelines.

For guidelines on specific types of articles, you may want to check out our criteria for biographies, for web sites, for bands, or for companies. Feel free to leave a note on my talk page if you have any questions about this. StephenBuxton (talk) 11:39, 27 December 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Your comments

[edit]

Hello

I saw your comments on my talk space. First off, I would suggest that if you are angry about something, please do not write immediately to the person you have an issue with. What results is so very often a lot of very angry words that I am sure that you would not usually use in other people's company. The best rule of thumb is to wait a day, and then type your response. By this time people generally cool off, and do not type words that are liable to start a flame war. I will assume that you did not really mean the words you used, and carry I will on from there.

OK, let's work through a few things. You ask why I deleted it? Strictly speaking, I did not. True, I did add the speedy deletion tag, and I did notify you about it to. I am not an administrator, I do not have the power to delete articles. All I can do is look at a new article, and decide from the content whether or not it meets the criteria for a Wikipedia article. Anyone can do it. You can too. If I (or anyone else) see an article that does not meet the criteria, then it can be nominated for deletion, and in the case of non-notable articles, speedy deletion.

The problem was that your article did not say why it was notable. YOu admitted yourself it was of a minor local celebrity. That automatically comes under the heading of not a notable topic. I suggest you have a look at the links provided in the notification message and see why your article sadly did not meet the requirements of being a Wikipedia article. I also see that I ommitted to add the standard welcome message. After I've posted this message, I'll see about adding it below.

I thoroughly recomend reading the articles in the welcome link. It will tell you how to decide whether or not something is going to make for a good article. A good rule of thumb is if you can find three good external references about the person/band/object/whatever. By good references, I mean something like a newspaper, a news website, a book, a tv programme, etc. Blogs and fan websites generally do not count.

I know it is frustrating to have an article of yours deleted (happened to me many times), but it is offset by the times when you see your contributions to an article (or even the article you started yourself) become a featured article (they are the ones that have gold stars in the top right hand corner).

When you do create that first article, make sure that you do include references as to what makes the article notable. Busybodies like me will look to see if it is notable, and if it is, we won't put a speedy deletion tag on it.

I would rather see an article survive than be deleted. To delete an article means that someone's time and effort has been wasted. However, I (as do all wikipedians) have to be pragmatic. Hundreds (if not thousands) of new articles get created every day. However, sadly, many should not have been created in the first place. A local band just starting out is not really worthy of a new article, and yet these articles are always being created. If they get a hit song, or some form of notoriety, that is when the article should be written.

So, please, read the welcome message below that is shortly about to appear, along with all the links, and help make Wikipedia a better place. StephenBuxton (talk) 23:04, 27 December 2007 (UTC)[reply]
