North Carolina State Parks

Thanks for taking an interest in editing the state parks of North Carolina. I have been working on these and many other state parks for some time now and am happy to have someone else working on the NC state parks. Your edits look really good so far. Could you take a look at this picture and confirm whether or not it is in Haw River State Park? According to Flickr it is. I don't remember where I got the other one. It was probably from Flickr but was just the Haw River. Gerry D (talk) 01:48, 4 August 2011 (UTC)

That picture does look very much like the board-walk at Haw River State Park. I think it likely is, but I don't see enough detail to be 100% sure. If that image has GPS coordinates, which I was unable to find, that would help place it firmly in the park. –Sparkgap (talk) 02:03, 4 August 2011 (UTC)

I don't see coordinates either. Its placement on the map makes me really think it's in the park. It appears to be just upstream from a lake and is near Conference Center Drive. The conference center is what is being converted into the park. Do you live closeby and could you get a picture? Gerry D (talk) 13:35, 4 August 2011 (UTC)

After that description, I looked at the flickr map again and discovered I was automatically disabling a script that would allow me to zoom in to the location. Anyway, after looking at a zoomed in map, the image location is within GPS error of where the board walk should be, and that lake is a major park feature. I'm now confident the image is from the park's boardwalk.

As far as getting a picture, I'm sure I have several suitable ones of different parts of the park. I would just have to find it. I have taken a plethora of photographs from every protected area I have visited, but I've never fully organized my collection of digital photos. I've also not uploaded a photo to Wikicommons yet, nor read about how to do so. –Sparkgap (talk) 23:37, 4 August 2011 (UTC)

WikiProject Protected areas

Hi Sparkgap, and welcome to WikiProject Protected areas! The project has been somewhat sleepy lately, but I hope that activity can be increased considerably through a number of initiatives. I'm thinking that maybe a Portal might be useful. I also advanced two proposals to speed up assessments and to set up the popular pages tool for the WikiProject. Moving Leave No Trace

136kHz

You have moved 136 kHz to 2200-meter band with no prior discussion as far as I can see. The only consensus I can see is a Wikipedia consensus. In the UK, as the first country to gain an allocation, the band is ALWAYS referred to as 136kHz. I only see it referred to as 2200m in the USA, a country that still has not got access to that band. Wikipedia:WikiProject Amateur radio discussed this issue while ago, and it is referred to under the announcements:

 All amateur band articles moved from the form "x meters" or "x centimeters" to "x-meter band" or "x-centimeter band"

• The discussion called for standardizing all the amateur radio bands under a name format to deal with problems of every band article using a regional name (EG: 4 metres vs 4 meters vs 4 metre band vs 4 meters band vs 4 metre ham band, etc). I don't know why, but the 136 kHz / 2200 meter band seemed to be forgotten. The discussion is here.
• I didn't post anything on the talk page because I thought the mater was settled by the WikiProject and hence non-controversial. I also thought the article had become neglected and unwatched due to how few edits had been made to it in years and how out-of-date some of the information in it had become. If I had thought anyone might have raised issue with the name change, I would have left the name alone and asked about changing it on the talk page, with a reference to the prior WikiProject discussion.
• As an aside, the US is not the only place that refers to the band as 2200 meters: IARU region 1, Belgian ham page
• And on a minor-note, amateur radio operators in the US do have "access" to the band, via experimental licenses, but there is not an allocation to the amateur radio service in the US. Though I feel this is irrelevant to what the article's name should be.

I am still not really in favour of the change and I think it would be useful if you opened a discussion on the talk page, that has long been on my watch list. I used to be active on 136kHz some years ago, also 500kHz. North Carolina International Port

If there were available facts (rather than opinions) supporting or justifying the construction of the proposed port, they would be cited in the article. If you look at the history of the piece, the only alternate viewpoints have been wholesale bulk erasures without providing any factual statements or references. Wiki 60 meter band page - You hold an Anti-Vandalism Barnstar ?

You hold an Anti-Vandalism Barnstar ? That's a joke ! Not content with changing my text in the Amateur Radio Bands Template page concerning ITU Radio Regulation 4.4, which, together with its link to ITU is perfectly clear and is far more accurate than your replacement wording, you now proceed to decimate the External Links section, abusing the Wikistyle 'rules' to do so.

Needless to say I have re-instated it.

Why is it that the 60 meter band page can remain in a stable state for something like 6 months - nobody complains - and then you come along and start messing about with it? You don't make any positive contributions of new material, (or material from your own country, for that matter) - just negativity all the time. If that isn't vandalism, I don't know what is.

This page has now become a well-respected, accurate piece of encyclopaedic work and one of the sources used and quoted by IARU. Your actions are not just upsetting me, but doing a disservice to Amateur Radio itself. I presume you're active on 5 MHz/60m ? And have a callsign (instead of hiding behind the Username of 'SparkGap')?
